Student initiatives
1.1 Ensure appropriate class sizes to maximize faculty-student and student-student interactions.

- PURE’s Sharing Undergraduate Research Experiences (new 2018 – 2019) (fall 2019)
Engaging in undergraduate research – The Western Howl - Q-Loop Studios is the student-led, digital media production team in the College of Education. They are an interdisciplinary organization that helps WOU students learn authentic skills that they can apply in many fields.
- The WOU National Student Exchange (NSE) program increased the number of students accepted to participate in the 2019-20 academic year (400% increase from FY 18). This study away program is parallel to study abroad, but key difference is students are able to pay WOU tuition/fee’s (and use financial aid awarded by WOU) towards their study away program. We have seen a large number of MSSP, SEP, Bilingual Scholar students participate and share interest in NSE. Additionally, this program has become an accessible way for DACA/undocumented students to pursue transformative experiences.

- Under construction | Provost Winningham has reached out the PURE board for a UBAC proposal.
- The Department of Politics, Policy & Administration supports the Model United Nations club that sends WOU students to Model United Nations conferences a year locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The department offers two courses to assist students to receive academic credit for their participation in conferences that includes developing and enhancing their skills in research, writing, public speaking, and diplomacy and interpersonal skills.

1.4 Implement student orientation programs that reflect diverse linguistic and cultural needs as well as differences in preparation and background.

- Under construction | Planned bilingual instruction for families in new WOU Welcome Center. See the final draft of the 2018 campus master plan.
- Student Success and Advising, Financial Aid, Student Health and Counseling and the Writing Center offer Spanish sessions for family and guests at SOAR. PLUS team members include bilingual members.

Faculty initiatives
2.1 Attract and retain faculty who reflect the diversity of our students and are excellent teachers and leaders in scholarly and creative pursuits within their respective fields of expertise.
- Human Resources provides resources for evidence-based search/screen processes. See the Search Committee orientation materials and the Affirmative Action checklist.
- Academic Affairs has implemented the Faculty Diversity Fund. This diversity fund can be used to improve our ability to successfully hire diverse faculty candidates by providing additional financial support that can be used for professional development or summer projects.

2.2 Increase faculty development support for scholarly and creative pursuits as well as innovative curricular design and delivery efforts.

- Faculty have updated and implemented improvements to curricular proposal forms and curriculum proposal guide to support program development (wou.edu/curriculum)
- We have defined B.A. and B.S. pathways and four programs created program modifications in 2019 to create both B.A. and B.S. major options in their programs. See catalog.wou.edu.
- Faculty continue to propose new majors, minors, certificates and degree pathways. For example, in 2019, these new graduate programs were approved and are in the 2019-20 catalog: Dual Language/Bilingual Education Certificate, Executive Leadership Certificate, Interpreting Studies: Reflective Practice, Operational Leadership Certificate, Liberal Studies, A.B., English Studies Minor, Organizational Leadership, M.A.

- Seven-year rotation program review system initiated by the Office of Academic Effectiveness, and program reviews completed; 2017-18 ASL American Sign Language Studies; 2017-18 English: Linguistics (& TOEFL), English: Literature, English Writing; 2018-19 Music Contemporary Music (all concentrations, BA, BS, BM, MM); Music: Audio Production; Music: Popular Music, Philosophy, Sociology.

- The College of Education has established a Special Educator cohort in the Salem-Keizer School District, a Saturday pathway through the Early Childhood Studies major, and online pathways through the Interpreting Studies, InfoTech, ESOL, Reading, EMS, and MAT programs.

- Support for interdisciplinary team teaching in FYS offerings, fall 2019 addition to CBA 2017-2020
- We now offer an Interdisciplinary Professional Studies MSED option, which as of fall 2019 has already started attracting new graduate students to WOU.
- Under construction | The Biology department has proposed an interdisciplinary Aquarium Science B.S. major, integrating business and biology courses and aquarium science courses from Oregon Coast Community College in the first of its kind at WOU collaborative WOU/Community College degree.
- A new Health Promotion (HE 257) course in the general education curriculum is a team-taught, interdisciplinary course co-taught by four faculty members.
- The Public Policy & Administration major and the Political Science major are designed so that students can receive elective and concentration credits for interdisciplinary courses such as Communication Studies, Business, Economics, Criminal Justice, Foreign Languages and Study Abroad.

Identify and support activities, programs and practices that promote excellence in all academic programs
5.1 Create opportunities for all undergraduate programs to include high-impact activities that support achievement of undergraduate learning outcomes.

- UBAC Proposal 168 (Experiential Learning Initiative) and UBAC Proposal 166 (STEM Cohorts) funded (President Phase Two Decisions). See wou.edu/ubac.
- We continue to offer strong co-curricular programs such as national award-winning Model U.N. and the Latino Mentors program.
- Students have the opportunity for a variety of Study Abroad programs.
- All undergraduate Early Childhood/Elementary and Elementary/Middle Level education majors participate in a variety of high-impact field experiences in their pre-education coursework, either in the classroom or in after-school programs. For example, these courses all contain high-impact field experiences.
- The Department of Politics, Policy & Administration has intentionally offered a variety of opportunities for high-impact activities in their courses including practicum, service learning, research projects, group collaboration, public presentations (such as AES), and civic engagement projects.

5.3 Continue and enhance support for undergraduate research experience, presentation and publication opportunities.

- Annual Academic Excellence Showcase conference offers students a regular opportunity to participate in undergraduate research. Faculty across departments and divisions engage with majors through the senior year capstone experiences, thesis work and internship projects. Students present their research at Academic Excellence Showcase and many of these student works posted to the WOU Digital Commons.
- Department of History faculty additionally support undergraduate research experiences by mentoring student presentation of their research at the annual regional Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society Conference.
- Under construction | Provost Winningham has reached out the PURE board for a UBAC proposal.
- The director of Service Learning & Career Development took an interdisciplinary team of faculty from Gerontology, Communications, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Criminal Justice to the Fall 2019 Experiential Learning Conference.
