National Student Exchange (NSE)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go with a friend?

Yes you can! This is called “Linked Exchange” and you’ll need to add the name of the person you are wanting to go on exchange with in your application, and they’ll do the same on their application. If you are interested, feel free to reach out to Cameron Mortensen (mortensenc@mail.wou.edu) so she can talk you through the process further.

How long can I go on exchange for?

The exchange depends on the school. You can choose to go on exchange for one term, or up to a year! (Most NSE schools are on the semester calendar, whereas WOU is on the quarter calendar, so spring semester would cover winter/spring quarter times here.) Feel free to look through the www.nse.org to see more about which school you would be interested in.

How do I know if I’m eligible?
  • You’re eligible if..
    • Full-time enrollment at WOU.
    • Completed at least 36 credits at the time of exchange.
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
    • Minimum term GPA of 2.5 at time of applying and prior to exchange.
    • Good academic standing.
    • No incomplete grades from previous terms.
    • No current or pending probationary status due to academic dishonesty or misconduct.
    • Must not be on probation, parole, or have any pending legal judgments.
What are the costs?

There is a $200 application fee, after applying. If you need help with that cost, reach out to Cameron Mortensen (mortensenc@mail.wou.edu) to see if there are options available.

Tuition will depend on the payment plan you choose, as well as the host campus you choose. Home Pay means you pay WOU tuition rates based on how many credits you are taking at your host campus. Host Pay means you pay in-state tuition at the campus you are going to attend.

Other costs to keep in mind are travel expenses, meal costs, dorming, and more; these will depend on the host campus you choose. You can use the Budget Worksheet form (NSE Budget Form) to understand your budget better.

How does Financial Aid work on exchange?

Financial Aid is always disbursed from your home campus, which is WOU. This is the case for all students participating in NSE, regardless of if you choose Home Pay or Host Pay.

All federal aid that you are eligible for will remain with you during exchange (i.e. federal loans, PELL Grant, Oregon Opportunity Grant, etc., if applicable), regardless of payment plan. Some scholarships such as the WOU Merit Scholarship, Diversity Commitment Scholarship, Bilingual and Diverse Teacher Scholarship, etc. are only applicable while on Home Pay. Your NSE Coordinator will help you find a placement that best fits your needs and situation.

Where will I live on exchange?

Most schools have on-campus housing available for incoming students which is recommended as it can give you full immersion but not mandatory. Some schools have highly competitive or limited housing availability, which may mean you’ll need to live off-campus. Your NSE coordinator can help you find a campus that best meets your needs.

What are the deadlines?

The priority deadline is February 28th, 2025. After this date, several campuses are still open and deadlines vary by campus. Feel free to look through this website to see the deadlines: https://nse.org/exchange/colleges-universities/chances-pc/
