Tuition and Fees for Free

What is the Tuition and Fees for Free Program?

Tuition and Fees for Free covers standard tuition and mandatory fees for 12 to 16 credits per term for first-year Oregon residents who meet all academic and financial aid requirements after other gift aid has been applied. Initial awards will be based on 12 credits per term and will be adjusted as needed after the census date each term. Tuition and Fees for Free is available to the standard academic terms fall, winter, and spring. Tuition and Fees for Free is not available for summer term.

Who is eligible?

Eligible students must meet the following criteria:

  • Current resident of Oregon
  • Graduate from an Oregon high school
  • Admitted to WOU as a first-year freshman for fall 2024
  • Have a 3.0 cumulative, unweighted high school GPA
  • Eligible to receive the Federal Pell Grant as determined by the FAFSA®
What do I need to do to apply and by what deadlines?
  • Submit the FAFSA® by February 1st.
    • Use WOU’s school code: 003209
  • Submit all required admission materials.
    • Official high school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, etc.
    • Submit your final high school transcripts by August 1st.
  • Accept all state and federal grants awarded.
Can I be part-time or co-admitted to another Oregon Community College?

No. Students must be enrolled full-time at WOU.

What are the covered costs?

To qualify, you must apply for federal and state grants. The program covers remaining standard tuition and fees after financial aid is applied.

Are housing and other educational expenses covered?

No. Personal funds, Federal Work Study (if awarded), loans, or other scholarships will be needed to cover housing and other educational expenses such as books and supplies.

Once I am a WOU student, how do I keep the award?

Complete the FAFSA® each year by February 1. You must remain eligible for the Federal Pell Grant. Enroll full-time each term (12-16 credits) and maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative college GPA.

If I receive the award, how long am I eligible to keep it?

Enroll full-time each term and maintain a cumulative 2.0 college GPA, and you can receive the award for up to 12 consecutive terms of enrollment.

Can I receive additional grants and scholarships?

Yes! Student are encouraged to submit the WOU Scholarship Application by March 1st and apply for outside scholarships. Financial aid award letters will notify you of additional grants or scholarships you may receive.

Will I receive loans if I qualify for Tuition and Fees for Free?

A student’s financial aid award may include loans to cover additional educational expenses such as Food and Housing, books, supplies, and personal expenses.

Western Oregon University’s Land Acknowledgement
Western Oregon University in Monmouth, OR is located within the traditional homelands of the Luckiamute Band of Kalapuya. Following the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855 (Kalapuya etc. Treaty), Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to reservations in Western Oregon. Today, living descendants of these people are a part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians.
