Welcome new COE faculty and staff!

The COE is expanding! Welcome to our 8 new hires for 2019-2020.

Brian Peet

Instructor, Deaf Studies & Professional Studies

I graduated from Gallaudet's Masters for Sign Language Education Program two years ago, but I’ve been teaching my entire life.

I have a small business as a photographer (specializing in family), adore watching movies and making them too. I love discussing history, playing soccer, and reading with my wife.

My personality is like a wolf's, so that’s one reason I am so glad to be working at WOU! I love the students and teachers here as well.

Christina Gentilini

Administrative Program Assistant, Dean’s Office

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Oregon State University with a BA in English and a minor in Writing.

I’m an animal lover and have two cats and a dog. I love anything gothic, horror or from the Victorian era. I also like reading, writing, watching movies and TV, hiking, and yoga.

My husband and I are always looking for new creative adventures – we are currently developing an animation series.

Courtney Fortenberry

Instructor, Division of Education & Leadership

I’m coming to WOU after spending the last nine years teaching for the Tillamook School District. I chose to step out of the elementary classroom and join WOU to help guide the next group of educators.

I’ve worked as a general education teacher (4th and 2nd grade), an academic special education teacher, a behavior special education teacher, and the teacher for a therapeutic multi-age classroom.

I’m a mom to three boys, and enjoy running, baking, and laughing.

Danielle Vander Linden

Instructor, Education & Leadership

I got my master’s degree in special education from Western Oregon University and have 10 years of experience working with at-risk children and youth in Oregon’s foster care system, as well as adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

For the past three years, I worked on a grant project that focused on creating and fostering trauma-informed school environments at Central High School in Independence.

I live in Salem with my family and you can find me playing with my son, knitting, cooking, and wine tasting in my free time.

Kathleen Kenyon

Instructor, Deaf Studies & Professional Studies

Before coming to WOU, I served as a Classroom Teacher at the Oregon School for the Deaf.

I love research and all things data as they serve to inform program development and new opportunities for students to grow as people, as language users, and as scholars.

The freedom to work hard for what I believe is good and right makes this my dream job! I am encouraged and welcomed to contribute positively, passionately, and openly to my field and the academic community at large, and I am inspired by the enthusiasm and diligence of those who serve alongside me. I am proud to be a Wolf!

Dr. Laura Ellingson-Sayen

Assistant Professor, Health & Exercise Science

I chose WOU because I am originally from Tacoma, WA and love the PNW! I also love teaching and opportunities to connect with students and was on the lookout for a position where those things are important. WOU seemed like a good fit!

My research and teaching center around understanding how being physically active positively influences mental health and wellbeing.

I am passionate about the outdoors and promoting movement to enhance health and wellbeing. I love to run and hike and generally be outside any chance I get.

Dr. Shari Hopkins

Assistant Professor, Division of Education & Leadership

After 5 years in Illinois, I'm excited to be back on the West Coast! One of the main reasons I chose WOU is because of their commitment to teacher education and because of all the great people I met during the on-campus interview.

In my spare time, I love to read and watch anything to do with sci-fi and the supernatural – but only fiction! I also like to explore new places, so any advice on where to go and what to see is appreciated.

Dr. Ya-Fang Cheng

Assistant Professor, Education & Leadership

Working in the field of early childhood education is my dream because it’s a world full of possibilities and happiness. I love working with young children. They make me laugh every day.

I earned early childhood education and elementary school teaching licenses in Taiwan and served as a preschool teacher in Taiwan and the US.

When I’m out of the classroom, I like to play with my cat, Sweet Potato, watch crime dramas, spend time with family, and visit zoos in every state (my goal is to collect zoos in all 50 states).
