      Zoom Class

Zoom Class Meeting Expectations and Norms

      Whole Class Expectations

      • The WOU Student Code of Conduct applies when in a Zoom session.  Treat each Zoom meeting like a regular classroom meeting.
      • Login to the Zoom meeting a couple of minutes before the scheduled class start time. This ensures that your professor can let you in from the waiting room, and gives you time to make sure all of your technology works prior to the start of class. This is critical to class starting on time and respecting the learning experience of your classmates.
      • Use your name when logging into Zoom. This allows your professor to take attendance. If you don’t use your name, you will not be marked as present. Click your name to set the display.
      • Mute your microphone when you join a class meeting. With large groups, unmuted microphones create feedback that makes it hard for others to hear.
      • If you are sharing, have a question, etc., you can unmute by clicking the microphone button and then re-mute yourself after you have finished sharing.
      • If possible, turn on your Webcam. We know that sometimes there are internet issues beyond your control, but it is helpful to see each other when working in small groups and as a whole class. It’s OK to click off your Webcam when participation is not expected.
      • Bring required materials to every class meeting as directed by your professor.
      • Try your best to be in a quiet space that has minimal background noise and distractions.
      • Make sure you are dressed appropriately and speak respectfully at all times to your peers.
      • Work cooperatively with others and be responsible for your own learning.
      • If you have a question, you can use the raise your hand feature or type your question in the chat. If your professor is sharing their screen, sometimes it is hard for them to see the raised hand without clicking through the entire class. You can direct questions to the whole class (everyone) or directly to your professor (private chat). Often, a peer may be able to answer your question in the chat if you ask everyone.

      Breakout Room Expectations

      • Join your breakout room quickly after the professor assigns them; if you are asked to join.
      • In breakout rooms, all mics are unmuted (unless there is feedback from someone). This allows you to talk freely with your group as you normally would in the classroom setting.
      • Discussions should be on-topic; working on the assigned task.
      • Take turns sharing ideas while collaborating.
      • Be respectful of questions asked by peers and try your best to help your entire group. Remember, teaching others helps you extend your own learning.
      • If needed, request help from your professor by clicking on the “ask for help” icon. This will prompt the professor to join your room to help and to give further clarification.
      • If using virtual manipulatives, select someone to share their screen so the group can work together to complete the assigned task.
      • If needed, select someone to open the whiteboard function so the group can work on problems together and explain their work. This makes it easier for all classmates to see versus trying to hold up your written work to the camera. Remember that you can save whiteboard images.
      • Your professor will be dropping in on break out sessions at random times to check on discussions, ask questions, or help clarify items.
