Social Wellness

Joining a social or academic organization on campus is a great way to get the most out of your Western experience. Involvement in campus or community club and organizations has advantages to both your personal and academic life.

Here are some of the best reasons to get involved:

  1. Discover a New Interest
    1. Do not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You may try something that you are passionate about.
  2. Build Your Resume
    1. Your resume is something that should be updated constantly. Getting involved with clubs, activities, or jobs that relate to your major is a great way to boost your resume. Even if activities do not seem directly related, they can highlight other skills that can be useful when applying to future jobs or graduate school.
  3. Develop Useful Skills
    1. Develop leadership skills. Clubs and organizations can help you develop better communication, teamwork, organizational, and management skills. Continue to build on these, put them to use in your everyday life, and highlight them on your resume.
  4. Scholarship Opportunities
    1. Some clubs and organizations offer scholarships. The more scholarships you earn, the less money you will have to pay back after college. If the organization you want to join does not offer scholarships, it will still be helpful experience when filling out other scholarship and job applications.
  5. Make New Friends
    1. Getting involved in clubs and organizations is one of the best ways to make new friends. There is not better place to meet people who have similar interests and passions as you.
  6. Helps Build Community
    1. It can be hard being away from your family and friends while you’re at college. Getting involved is a great way to build a new community of friends with similar interests. This support is crucial when enduring stressful times.
  7. Helps You Become Connected With Your School
    1. Becoming more involved also gives you a closer connection with your school. You have opportunities to learn and see all of the resources that are provided for you.
  8. Have Fun!
    1. Getting involved on campus is also a great way to take a mental break from school work. It is important you find something that excites you, and that you can look forward to after a long day. It is all about balance.
