Importance of Self-Care
Self-care looks different to everyone, and sometimes it’s difficult to know what self-care techniques work best for you. However, if you don’t give yourself time to relax and rejuvenate, you may feel overwhelmed and worn out; this could end up hurting your grades, your work, your relationships, and other aspects of your life. It’s important for you to prioritize taking care of yourself for the sake of your mental health and your productivity.
Reasons We Don’t Prioritize Self-Care
- You may feel like you’re too busy and don’t have time. However, by not giving yourself the necessary breaks, you actually do more harm than good, especially when completing projects. Our brains and body aren’t meant to work in overdrive, and they actually do better with semi-frequent breaks.
- You may feel guilty or selfish for taking time for yourself. Sometimes it may be difficult to tell people “No” without feeling guilty. But overall, if they are important to you, they’ll understand that you need to have time to yourself too.
- You may want to put other people’s needs before yours. Helping others with their problems or being there for someone who needs it is great. However, if it negatively affecting your own mental health, you may need to take a step back and refer them to a more experienced professional. You shouldn’t have to bear all of their burdens with them.
