I am from Salem, Oregon, majoring in forensic chemistry with a focus in analytical chemistry. My goal is to get a doctorate in analytical chemistry. This summer I had an NIH REU internship at the University of Delaware where I learned how to use Time of Flight – Secondary Ion Mass Spectometry (TOF-SIMS), and K-ALPHA+ X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometry (XPS) in a research setting looking at protein degradation of tempera for use in art conservation.

As a Chemistry student at WOU, having the opportunity to work as a TA with the Chemistry Department was a great experience for me. It gave me a chance to not only work with students in the lab, but to grow and develop my own personal philosophy about teaching. The WOU CIP program was a great help in finding and preparing for this internship and I would encourage anyone who is thinking about getting an internship through them to do it. This was a great way for me to discover what I am really passionate about and what I want to do with my future.

I am currently a third year Forensic Chemistry major. I am from Salem, Oregon and I graduated from Blanchet Catholic School. The reason why I’m studying forensic chemistry is because I am fascinated by crime stories and how much information can be inferred from the smallest details at a crime scene. What I’m hoping to do is enter into medical school and become a forensic pathologist. Besides being a chemistry major, I am an executive member of WOU’s Triangle Alliance, an Ambassador, and a lab Teacher’s Assistant. Some of my hobbies include traveling, reading, watching movies, and enjoying of hot cup of tea!
Connor Thompson – Traditional Chemistry Emphasis
Amanda Vander Hyde – Forensic Chemistry Emphasis
I am from Palmdale, California. I am a Forensic Chemistry major. I got interested in forensics when I was in fifth grade and attended the National Young Scholars Program with an emphasis in criminology. Ever since then I have wanted to be a part of the justice system as someone who can help figure out who committed the crime. Eventually, I would love to work for some level of government as a trace analyst.

Chelsea Wiley – Forensic Chemistry Emphasis
Kiana Wilson – Forensic Chemistry Emphasis
I am a Chemistry major with a minor in Forensics and I am from Springfield OR. I hope to get my BS in chemistry then start working for the Oregon State Crime lab. I picked this discipline because it would be the best match for all the different departments I want to work in at a crime lab.
