Choosing the right class

German Placement Test

If you know some German and wonder which class you need, these tests will help you decide. The questions are based on Berliner Platz Neu, the textbook series we use in all language classes:

Berliner Platz Neu, 1 = First Year German, GL 101-103

Berliner Platz Neu, 2 = Second Year German, GL 201-203

Berliner Platz Neu, 3 = Third Year German, GL 301-303

Each test covers specific chapters and is a good indicator of what class is your best starting point.

To access the tests, please follow these steps:

  1. Click the link German placement test
  2. Go to the bottom of the page: “Einstufungstest zum Ausdrucken”
  3. Download and print the tests and answer keys.
  4. Follow the placement instructions.
  5. The tests begin on page 5.

 

Pages 5-6: T 1 (Berliner Platz 1 Neu, chapters 1-6)

Allow 10 minutes.

Follow the instructions and after filling in the blanks, check your answers on p.16.

If you have 14 or more correct, take T2.

If you have fewer than 14 correct, enroll in First Year German (GL 101 or 102), offered fall and winter terms. Check with Instructor.

Pages 7-8: T 2 (Berliner Platz 1 Neu, chapters 7-12)

Allow 10 minutes.

Follow the instructions and after filling in the blanks, check your answers on p.16.

If you have 14 or more correct, take T3.

If you have fewer than 14 correct, enroll in First Year German (GL 103), offered spring term.

Pages 9-10: T 3 (Berliner Platz 2 Neu, chapters 13-18)

Allow 10 minutes.

If you have 14 or more correct, take T4.

If you have fewer than 14 correct, enroll in Second Year German (GL 201), offered fall term.

Pages 11-12: T 4 (Berliner Platz 2 Neu, chapters 19-24)

Allow 10 minutes.

Follow the instructions and after filling in the blanks, check your answers on p.16.

If you have 14 or more correct, take T5.

If you have fewer than 14 correct, enroll in Second Year German (GL 203), offered spring term.

Pages 13-14: T 5 (Berliner Platz 3 Neu, chapters 25-30)

Allow 10 minutes.

If you have 14 or more correct, enroll in Third Year German (GL 301), offered fall term.

If you have fewer than 14 correct, enroll in Second Year German (GL 203), offered spring term.

Western Oregon University’s Land Acknowledgement
Western Oregon University in Monmouth, OR is located within the traditional homelands of the Luckiamute Band of Kalapuya. Following the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855 (Kalapuya etc. Treaty), Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to reservations in Western Oregon. Today, living descendants of these people are a part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians.
