Assessment
Western Oregon University’s Campus Recreation Department has been an active member of NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation since 2012. NIRSA provides for the education and development of professionals and student members and fosters quality recreational programs, facilities, and services for diverse populations. Collecting research and data is integral to NIRSA’s processes of improving the profession and associated programs, services, and facilities of collegiate recreation. Established in 2009, the Recreation and Wellness Benchmark / Survey provides a benchmarking mechanism to capture ways in which campus recreation enhances the lives of students inside and outside the classroom. It has become one of the nine Consortium studies that institutions can choose to participate in. The NASPA Assessment & Knowledge Consortium is a collection of assessment instruments focused on key areas within Student Affairs. (Forrester, 2014)
The Campus Recreation Department has participated in this national benchmark survey on a biannual basis (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019). The consortium studies are designed to provide the Campus Recreation Department with actionable, campus-specific (Benefits of Campus Recreation at WOU) and benchmarking data to shape and enhance future programming. Student Fees
The Campus Recreation Department is considered an Auxiliary Enterprise and is designed to provide recreational services to students, faculty, staff, other institutional departments, or incidentally to the general public. As such, the designed distinguishing characteristic of an auxiliary enterprise is that it is managed as an essentially self-supporting activity. The majority of the Campus Recreation Department’s funding comes from the Incidental Fee, a set amount that every student pays each term as part of Western Oregon University’s tuition and fees.

The Campus Recreation Strategic plan 2022-2026 provided the department an opportunity to create a Mission Statement and develop Values, and establish a series of goals, strategies, and metrics that will guide efforts, both as a comprehensive department and as individual units within our department. It will allow us to continue to achieve our mission, in ways that are consistent with our values, and our commitment to the greater objectives of Athletics and our University.

Future Growth of Campus Recreation Department
The main focus of the Campus Recreation Department is to plan for future growth and requests of our incoming campus population. By utilizing the data gathered from 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019 NASPA Assessment & Knowledge Consortium study the Campus Recreation Department will be requesting an increase in funding and developing new collaborations with other departments to develop these areas.
- Expand weekday and weekend operating hours
- Develop a Club Sports post-season financial support system
- Expand Facility orientations and education programs
- Increase weekend Informal Rec activities
- Provide Outdoor overnight programs
Advisory Committee
As a volunteer Advisory Committee member, you will have the opportunity to provide a fresh, informed perspective on the shaping of programs and culture. We will be reviewing and making recommendations on a number of activities and scheduling issues, which will determine the success of the facilities and future growth capacity. We are looking for student leaders who are passionate about learning, yearn to implement change, and care about helping other students achieve their potential.
About the Committee
Committee Bylaws
The Campus Recreation Advisory Committee is a volunteer Advisory Committee for the Campus Recreation Department. Student opinions and perspectives are essential to the success of Campus Recreation.
Purpose
Campus Recreation Advisory Committee shall serve the following purposes for the benefit of the Western Oregon University (WOU) collective student body:
- Review and make recommendations regarding the proposed annual budget for Campus Recreation (CR)
- Determine the Turf Field policies and priority of usage to maximize students’ access
- Review CR programs, services, and facilities and make recommendations to support and enhance the well-being and success of WOU students
- Advise CR of needed additions and/or improvements to recreation facilities
- Serve as a sounding board for the leadership of the unit
Governance
Campus Recreation is part of Western Oregon University’s Athletics Department (2021-present) and previously in the Division of Student Affairs (1980s-2021).
The Campus Recreation Advisory Committee will consists of:
- Student – (Voting members)
Not less than 4 and up to 8 student representatives
Each area will have a minimum of one representative (Intramural Sports, Club Sports, and Athletics)
No more than two representatives are allowed from each area (Intramural Sports, Club Sports, or Athletics)
(each student will serve for a 1-year term) – General appointments - Faculty/Staff – (Voting members)
Not less than 1 and up to 2 Faculty/Staff representative(s)
Faculty/Staff member representative(s) will hold a current Health and Wellness Center membership
(each Faculty/Staff member will serve a 1-year term) – General appointments - Ex-Officio – (Non-voting members)

Desired Qualifications
- Proven leadership and analytical skills
- Self-motivated team player
Commitments
- Positively and productively communicate about college students’ concerns and needs.
- Work to influence the direction of existing and future programs for all members.
- Consistently attend all meetings which may occur up to two times during fall, winter and/or spring terms for approximately 1-2 hours.
Responsibilities
All members will be expected to fill one academic year and are strongly encouraged to re-apply each year.
Voting members consist of no less than five and up to ten general appointed students and faculty/staff members. The Chair will be the tie-breaking vote if needed. A quorum of ½ +1 voting members must be present when calling for a vote.
- Meeting days and times will be determined based on the availability of the committee’s schedules and required actions needed.
- All meetings are open to the public pursuant to the Oregon Public Meetings Law
- Small Meeting Format Robert’s Rules of Order shall guide meetings, at the discretion of the Chair
- The Committee Chair will be selected for the first meeting by the committee members or may be carried over from the previous year if desired. The Chair will be responsible for conducting the meeting and assigning duties to committee members if needed.
- It is Campus Recreation’s responsibility to record meeting notes, compile, and distribute meeting minutes via email to committee members within one week of the meeting.
Eligibility
Student members must be currently enrolled WOU students paying incidental fees (IFC) to be eligible
Faculty and Staff members must be currently employed by WOU to be eligible
How to Apply
Students, faculty, or staff desiring to be a part of the Advisory Committee can email horseyr@wou.edu for an application, may be solicited by Campus Recreation advertisements, or nominations may be obtained from requests. Applications become available during the fall academic term and the selection process will during October/November for the upcoming year. Current members are always strongly encouraged to re-apply. All applications will be turned in at the Health and Wellness Center front desk, sent through email, or collected utilizing other electronic forms during fall recruitment. Email, personal connections, and electronic advertisements indicating applications are being accepted will be displayed during the fall term.
