The Outdoor Program provides a common adventurer willing to share experience and educate participants about Leave No Trace principles. Each participant is a common adventurer and is responsible for their own decisions and behavior. Participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that is courteous and considerate of the diverse group of individuals that may also be participating in the activity.

 Fall 2022

Silver Falls Hike and Photography-

We will depart from the HWC at 9:00am, for Silver Falls State Park. This is a relaxing day hike opportunity to see fall foliage and waterfalls while hiking one of Oregon’s most beautiful trails. A section of the Trail of Ten Falls will offer the best opportunity for photographing the waterfalls this fall. We will park at the South Falls Day-use area and hike from South Falls to Winter Falls where we will turn around or complete our loop along the Rim Trail.

Winter 2023

Central Oregon Avalanche Association Presentation

Information: “Know Before You Go” – is a FREE avalanche awareness education program developed to provide the basics of what avalanches look like, how people trigger them, their destructive power and how to recognize avalanche terrain, recognize obvious signs of instability, safe travel practices, the basics of avalanche rescue equipment and self-rescue procedures, and where to obtain information about current avalanche conditions and answer any questions you might have.

Snowshoe Excursion Ray Benson Sno-Park

We will depart from the HWC at 9:00 am for Ray Benson Sno-Park. This is a stimulating day for snowshoeing or hiking. The views of Santiam Pass, Hoodoo butte, Three Finger Jack and Mt. Washington  are quite dramatic under snow. Snowshoes will be provided for those interested in snowshoeing. This is a moderately easy 3 mile (round trip) loop.

Spring 2023

Cascade Head Trail

We will depart from the HWC at 9:00 am, for Cascade Trailhead. This is a fun, relaxing day hike with two options: the 4.2 miles to the Nature Conservancy, or the 5.4 miles to Harts Cove. Throughout the year there are sea lions barking and lounging in a cove, a view of the Salmon River estuary, and wildflower meadows for your viewing pleasure.

Dependents, partners and Friends directly accompanied and sponsored by a WOU student/staff/faculty may join our trips.  Dependents required to be in a car or booster seat can still join our trips, but must be driven separately in a personal vehicle and MUST be indicated on the registration form.

Refund and No-Show Policy

If a participant no-shows on two trips within an academic year, they will be restricted from signing up for another trip that academic year. To avoid being a no-show, please call the Health and Wellness Center 503-838-9530 as soon as possible, if you will not be able to attend a trip.

  • If you cancel 2 weeks or more before the trip start date, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel within the two-week window, you may receive a pro-rated refund.
  • If we cancel a trip due to weather or low enrollment, we will issue a full refund.

Equipment Rentals

Rental Policies
Our outdoor equipment rental program exists to serve the WOU community. In order to rent equipment individuals must present their current WOU ID Card. Without proof of affiliation with WOU, equipment will not be rented.  Equipment may only be rented for 21 days per rental.

Check-out

  • Equipment is checked out at the HWC front desk upon availability of that equipment on a first come first serve basis.
  • Any equipment checked out under your account becomes your responsibility and must be returned by you, the renter.
  • Renters will be required to sign a rental agreement form that includes a statement indicating it is the renter´s responsibility to know how to properly use, operate, secure and maintain the equipment.
  • It is the responsibility of the renter to inspect equipment being rented for any previous damage and note this on the rental agreement.
  • Individuals should allow adequate time to inspect equipment for previous damage. Please allow a minimum of 30 minutes for the equipment check out process.
  • No fee or payment will be required at time of check out.

Check-in

  • Returned equipment must be checked in at the HWC front desk.
  • Equipment must be returned during HWC open hours. All rentals spanning an HWC closure (holidays, breaks, etc) will accrue rental fees.  It is the renter’s responsibility to check the HWC schedule to ensure the facility is open the same days check out and return are desired.
  • Individuals should allow adequate time for rental returns. Please allow a minimum of 30 minutes for the check in process.
  • Damage fees may be assessed upon further set up and inspection of equipment.
  • Your rental agreement form will be completed upon check in.

Pre-Reserve Equipment

  • Equipment may be pre-reserved via email to Campus Recreation up to 2 weeks in advance.
  • Email must contain the specific gear requested with quantity, sizes, dates of reservation and individual’s V-number.
  • If the pre-reservation does not come through the email request method or is not confirmed via email, the equipment rental is considered first come first serve.
  • Failure to pick-up pre-reserved equipment by time of reservation may result in the equipment being rented to others as first come first serve.
  • Pre-reservations may only include up to 3 of each item. (ie: 3 tents, 3 sleeping bags, 3 sets of trekking poles etc.)
  • Upon check out at the HWC front desk, renter may add additional pieces of equipment if available.
  • All other check-out and check-in policies apply.

Payment

  • Rental fees are estimated at check-out.
  • Payment is required at time of check-in (cash or check only).

Damage/Replacement Fees

  • If the equipment is damaged upon return, the cost of the repairs will be assessed and charged to the renter’s WOU account. If the equipment is irreparable or missing items are not returned the cost of the replacement value of the equipment will be charged to the renter’s WOU account.
  • Replacement values may vary upon retail availability/pricing.
  • All lost or damaged equipment is subject to a fine.
  • It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure they have adequate transportation and in some cases, storage, for the equipment.
  • If the equipment is not returned within 7 days of the expected return date the replacement value of the unreturned equipment will be charged to the renter´s WOU account.
  • The renter will receive an email notification informing them of any charges.
