Decision Making

Evaluate relationships or patterns between your Self Exploration, Major Exploration, and Career Exploration to make an informed decision about your major.

Goals

  1. Identify any patterns between your Self, Major, and Career Exploration
  2. Become aware of your decision making style.
  3.  Create an action plan for declaring a major

Questions to Consider

  • What kind of decision-maker are you? What styles or strategies do you use?
  • How well do you integrate your values into your decisions?
  • How do you implement your decision once it’s made?

Decision Making Activities

  1. List how your interests and abilities relate to the occupational and educational options you have identified
  2. List ways their decision making style has impacted them in making decisions
  3. Describe how they can implement decisions once they are made

Decision Making Styles

The decision making model by Johnson and Coscarelli (2007) has two main descision mking componants: Structural Style and Processing Style. Each part has two approaches and these are then combimed to create four decision making styles.

Structural Style

1. Systematic (organized and planned)

2. Spontaneous (quick and flexible)

Processing Style

1. Internal (focused on personal thought and feelings)

2. External (focused on external information and interactions)

Systematic Internal

Reflect:

  • How did you arrive at this decision?
  • What sources did you use to get your information?
  • How long have you been thinking about the decision?
  • How will you respond if you need to change plans in the future?

Activities:

  • Think about your decision and make note about how you are feeling
  • Commit to a long-term goal (related to your decision).
Systematic External

Reflect:

  • How did you arrive at this decision?
  • What sources did you use to get your information?
  • Who influenced your decison?
  • How long have you been thinking about the decision?
  • How will you respond if you need to change plans in the future?

Activities:

  • Commit to a long-term goal (related to your decision).
Spontaneous Internal

Reflect:

  • What resources did you use to gather information?
  • Is there any addidtional information you need before making a decision?

Activities:

  • Think about your decision and make note about how you are feeling
  • Commit to a goal (related to your decision) that is realistic and obtainable.
Spontaneous External

Reflect:

  • How did you arrive at this decision?
  • Who influenced your decision?
  • What  information did you use to base your decision?
  • Is there any additional information you need?

Activities:

  • Think about your decision and make note about how you are feeling
  • Commit to a goal (related to your decision) that is realistic and obtainable.
