“Technoference” refers to everyday interruptions and distractions from cell phones. There is evidence that “technoference” occurs in parent-child interactions and may impact child language development. The “mere presence” of a cell phone, even when not used, may impact language. We explored changes in parent-child questions and answers when the parent was interacting with a cell phone. Using a repeated measures design, thirty parent-child dyads (Parents Mage = 33.97 years, SD = 4.93; Children Mage = 37.14 months; SD = 10.32 months) were videotaped interacting with toys across three conditions including parent receiving and responding to text messages; parent expecting to receive messages, but none received (i.e., the “mere presence” condition); and cell phone silenced and out of sight. Videotapes were transcribed and coded. When texting, parents-child question and answer sequences differed from the other two conditions. The “mere presence” of the cell phone had no impact on parent or child language. Results suggest that parent texting disrupts language.
