Seeking Higher Ground: How Native Raptors in the Pacific Northwest Utilize Man-Made T-Perches.
Adrien Weathers, Jim Dawson, and Amy Dawson, Department of Biology, Western Oregon
University (345 Monmouth Ave N, Monmouth, OR, 97361)
Native raptors in the Pacific Northwest use perches, like trees, to get clearer views of their surroundings, gaining an advantage when hunting. Raptors have also been observed utilizing man-made structures presumably for similar behaviors. Although little is known specifically about how raptors utilize these structures. T-perches are man-made structures that are often erected around agricultural fields and nature preserves to motivate raptor predation in the area. This is beneficial to encourage raptors to use open habitats that lack tree perches. In order to determine how raptors were utilizing T-perches in the Willamette Valley, we mounted trail cameras 12ft away from six different T-perches adjacent to agricultural fields in Monmouth OR. Each camera recorded footage for two weeks in the Spring and Autumn 2025. This footage was later categorized by raptor species and behavior while perched, with frequency of behaviors of different species analyzed. Data from the Spring 2025 and Autumn 2025 trials support that each raptor species observed (except Cooper’s hawks in the Spring 2025 trial) most frequently displayed scanning behaviors to search for prey. With data supporting that raptors primarily use T-perches for predation, this could be further reason to encourage raptor activity with perches in agricultural fields as a form of natural pesticide, and supports the use of T-perches as an effective tool for reintroducing raptors into recovering nature preserves.
