New BA Program

Creative Production

Creative Production is a multidisciplinary major that combines video & audio production, information technology, media studies, digital content creation, and live performance. Students pursue their own creative direction in a supportive, resource-rich artistic community. Graduates are prepared to produce creative projects individually and/or work in professional teams.

The Creative Production curriculum has four main components: Digital Art & Design, Audio Production, Computer Science, and Critical Thinking. Throughout the program, students work in these areas simultaneously, gaining the ability to handle many aspects of complex productions.

Facilities and Tools

Studio 230 & Recording Lab 226

Studio 230 – together with the attached Recording Lab 226 – is the primary audio production facility at WOU. Built in 2013, it is one of the finest recording facilities on any Oregon campus. Studio 230 is outfitted with professional grade equipment, including microphones, preamps, instruments, effects processors, and state-of-the-art audio recording software. It has two large isolation rooms and is capable of recording up to 24 tracks at a time. The control room also functions as a classroom for audio production courses, accommodating up to 12 students.

Art & Design Digital Labs/Classrooms

Renovated and updated in 2021, digital labs for Art & Design feature incredibly fast Mac computers with UHD monitors, and Adobe Creative software including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and more. Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic cameras and lenses are available for student use and checkout. Archival printing, video equipment, and laser cutter use are also available.

Q-Loop & Video Production Learning Lab

Q-Loop productions is a student-developed and led film production team that currently serves the Western Oregon University College of Education. Q-Loop’s goal is to create engaging content for faculty and staff while providing students with a high-impact learning opportunity. In addition to their role as content creators, Q-Loop supervises, helps set policy, and maintains the Video Production Learning Lab (VPPL) located in the Richard Woodcock Education Center.

The VPLL offers a wide range of broadcast-quality capabilities, starting with an array of professional grade video cameras and microphones. The studio features a 1.5 wall green screen and a wrap-around black screen on rails, allowing for full body keying (greenscreen). A full dead-hung grid with 15 lighting fixtures is controlled via DMX by a programmable console. Other features include a dolly track system and jib (crane) arm, a full body Steadicam system, teleprompters, Wacom tablets, Mac computers, large UHD monitors, audio interfaces, and automated control surfaces.
