Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Free tax preparation services for low-income individuals and families.

Who Qualifies

Most taxpayers qualify if any of the following apply:

  • People who generally make $69,000 or less
  • Persons with disabilities, and
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers
  • Most participants must file by April 15, 2026.
  • Some restrictions apply. Taxpayers will be asked a few qualifying questions at the time they schedule their appointments.

Parking and Check-in
Paid parking is available across the street from the building, in Lot O. Please pay for parking at one of the parking kiosks located in Lot K and Lot B (the two closest to Lot O). Parking is free on Saturdays. Please look for the VITA flag at the Welcome Center entrance and proceed to Room 136 to check-in.

Dates and Hours of Operation
Important: OUR OFFICE IS NOT STAFFED BETWEEN APRIL 12, 2026-FEBRUARY 4, 2027. Free tax preparation services are offered only during the annual tax filing season (roughly February – mid-April). Our last day of operation for 2025 tax year filings is Saturday, April 11, 2026. If you need assistance outside of our normal dates of operation, please email MITaxResources@gmail.com and a member of that volunteer team will refer you to an appropriate resource.

We expect to operate for the 2026 tax year filing season between February 5 – April 15, 2027. Appointments for the 2026 tax year filing season will be accepted beginning January 15, 2027. Office hours are by appointment only. No walk-ins will be accepted.

2026 TAX YEAR APPOINTMENTS
We will begin taking appointments for the 2026 tax year on Friday, January 15, 2027. Our first day of operations for the 2026 Tax Year is expected to be Friday, February 5, 2027. We will publish dates, times and locations available for 2026 tax year appointments by January 18, 2027. Please check this website in January 2027 for updated information regarding the 2026 tax return preparation program. You may also visit MITaxResources.org for information on the 2026 tax year filing season and to find resources for local tax assistance outside of the normal tax season.

Making an Appointment
Appointment request forms for the 2026 tax year will be released by January 15, 2027. Use of an Appointment Request Form is the preferred method for making appointments. Appointment request forms will be available in both English and Spanish.

Scheduling

Once the 2026 tax filing season begins, we will be able to assist taxpayers at our Monmouth location with tax returns for tax years 2025 and 2026. Through our partnership with AARP Tax-Aide, we may be able to arrange assistance with earlier tax years. Please make note on your Appointment Request Form if you need help with multiple tax years. Appointments are required for all services. No walk-ins will be accepted.

Checklist of Required Documents

Please bring all of the documents and information requested below to your appointment.

  • Completed IRS Form 13614-C
    • You may pick this form up in advance from either the Monmouth Public Library or the Independence Public Library.
    • You may also download this form either here (English Version) or here (Spanish Version).
    • You may also arrive early for your appointment and complete the form onsite. If you plan to do this, please arrvive at least 20 minutes before your appointment time.
  • Photo ID
    • For both spouses, if filing jointly
    • Must be an unexpired ID
  • Social Security card AND Dates of Birth
    • For you
    • For spouse
    • For all dependents
  • W-2 Forms
    • These are forms showing your wage and tax information.
    • Bring one from each employer in 2025 (if you had two jobs & employers, you should have 2 W-2 forms)
    • These should be received by Feb. 15
  • 1099 Forms
    • These show your sources of income (interest, dividends, retirement, other sources)
    • From banks, brokerages, contract work, or any other source of income
  • Proof of Deductible Costs (if applicable)
    • Receipts showing education expenses, including books.
    • Proof of daycare costs
    • Charitable contribution receipts
    • Evidence of any other deductible costs
  • 1095-A, -B, or -C Form
    • Shows health coverage. This is especially important if you purchased health insurance on the Marketplace and received an Advance Premium Tax Credit during 2025.
  • 1099-SA Forms
    • If you have a health savings account
  • 2024 Tax Returns
    • If you didn’t file in 2024, bring your 2023 or other most recent tax return.

IMPORTANT

  • Please bring your Bank Account Number & Routing Number
  • The IRS will no longer mail checks for refund payments.
  • Please bring a blank check or some other documentation to share this information with your tax preparer.
  • If you are unable to provide a bank account number and routing number, the IRS is able to deposit funds into a prepaid debit card, but direct deposit to your bank account is recommended as the most reliable option.
