Faculty: How We Can Support You Online

As classes and services are now online, there are some significant changes in how the Writing Center can serve you and your students. But we want you to know that we are committed to providing writing support and finding innovative solutions for online distance support. Feel free to read through this page and learn more about our plan for supporting you this term.

This page contains online-specific resources created to help you while we are operating remotely. To visit our traditional faculty page with more general resources, click the button below:

Our Online Tutoring Offerings

  • Completely online tutoring for your students. We are shifting all our tutoring online, with synchronous online tutoring. We can chat, video conference, and voice call your students, too, to make their session time more productive.
  • Virtual class presentations and workshops. Instead of visiting your classrooms in person this term, we have some some online resources for your students. Additionally, if you would like to host a virtual workshop for one of your courses, we can collaborate online with you and your students and help lead workshops for them. Contact us at writingcenter@mail.wou.edu to set something up.
  • Assignment design support as you transition online. As you move your courses online this term, there will inevitably be some changes you will need to make to your assignment directions. Our full-time staff members are here as a resource to assist you in assignment and rubric design, if you have questions at all.
  • Online confirmation emails instead of “Golden Tickets”. Instead of giving your students “golden tickets” as evidence for their visit to the Writing Center, we will be emailing you directly immediately following their appointment.
  • A Revised Syllabus Statement to post online. We revised our syllabus statement for you to post online for this term, highlighting our online resources. Feel free to copy and paste it into your syllabus.

Resources for Your Students

We built a special webpage for your students this term, too. Feel free to share this with them or link to your Moodle page.

Revised Syllabus Statement

We put together a revised syllabus statement with hyperlinks for you this term.  Feel free to copy and paste this into your syllabus:

The Writing Center is the only academic support unit on campus specifically designed to promote your development and success as a college writer. The consultant team is available to assist you online and in-person with writing projects for any course and any level of instruction. The Writing Center also offers specialized assistance for multimodal compositions or new media projects like digital narratives, blogs, websites, slideware presentations, and even YouTube videos.

You are invited to utilize Writing Center services at a variety of stages in your writing processes: understanding assignment directions; brainstorming ideas; creating “maps” or outlines; checking to see that your project specifically meets the directions specified by your instructor; exploring practical routes for revision and development; and adhering to format and style guides (e.g., AAA, APA, ASA, CBE, Chicago, and MLA). While tutors avoid “fixing” your writing, they do help you become conscious of, and proactive about, particular error patterns that emerge in your written work. Additionally, the Writing Center maintains an online library of reference texts and take-home handouts.
