Best Practices for Accessible Events with Interpreting and/or Captions

Communication Access Levels

When planning an event please fill out this request form or email hrinterpreting@wou.edu. The following levels of access will provide a guideline for how access decisions will be made by the coordinator.

Level 1 - Accommodations by request

Description: Campus events that are online or in person and hosted for students, faculty, staff, and/or community members. These events are not recorded and will not be posted on a WOU website. Requests can be made by event organizer or individual(s) requiring accommodations. 

Examples: Student club activities, college level professional development, guest speakers, events requiring an RSVP to register.

Please include the following accessibility statement on all campus communications about this event:

If you would like to request disability-related accommodation(s) to participate in a WOU activity or event, please complete the online request form at least three (3) business days in advance. If you have questions, contact Disability Access Services (DAS) at 503-838-8250 or das@wou.edu. 

Level 2 - Open captions provided, all other accommodations by request

Description: Campus events that are online or in person and hosted for students, faculty, staff, and/or community members. These events are live streamed or recorded and will be posted on a WOU website. 

Examples: Board of Trustees meetings, guest speakers whose presentations are live streamed or will be posted on a WOU website, professional development opportunities or training that will be posted on a WOU website.

Please include the following accessibility statement on all campus communications about this event:

Live captions will be provided at this event.

If you would like to request disability-related accommodation(s) to participate in a WOU activity or event, please complete the online request form at least three (3) business days in advance. If you have questions, contact Disability Access Services (DAS) at 503-838-8250 or das@wou.edu. 

Level 3 - Open captions and interpreters provided, all other accommodation by request

Description: Campus sponsored events that are online or in person, and intended for a wide audience of students, faculty, staff, and/or community members. These events may be live streamed or recorded and posted on a WOU website. These events may be required or strongly encouraged for students or employees. Additionally, the content of these events may strongly represent the mission, vision, and values of the university to the extent that the university elects to make them as accessible as possible. 

Examples: Presidential addresses, programs from the DEI office, HR required training, executive level candidate presentations.

This event will have live captions and ASL interpretation.

Western Oregon University’s Land Acknowledgement
Western Oregon University in Monmouth, OR is located within the traditional homelands of the Luckiamute Band of Kalapuya. Following the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855 (Kalapuya etc. Treaty), Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to reservations in Western Oregon. Today, living descendants of these people are a part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians.
