Education

Born in PA; lived in PA, AZ, CA, IL, VA, IN; moved to OR from IN Summer 2011; taught both elementary and secondary students in PA, AZ, IL, VA, and IN. Married to a teacher =) and have one 9-year old son. Love most outdoor activities especially now that I don't have to fight humidity or mosquitoes.

M.S.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction: University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, Champaign, IL
B.S. in Elementary Education: Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA

Professional experience

Alicia Wenzel is currently a Professor at Western Oregon University helping to prepare future teachers specializing in Curriculum and Assessment. She is an advocate for young adolescents, serving on professional organizations’ executive boards dedicated to middle level education.  Dr. Wenzel established the WOU COE Bridge Program in 2011which supports soon-to-be, beginning, and novice teachers and she continues to seek best practices that help K-12 teachers and students succeed. Research interests include supporting beginning teachers, technology in the classroom, and rigorous and relevant instructional and assessment practices. Alicia has been in higher education since 2004.

Prior to her work in higher education, she worked as a middle school and elementary educator for 10 years teaching primarily math and language arts to students in high needs, rural areas. Personal interests include traveling with her family, gardening, kayaking, cooking, baking, relay marathons, reading, and watching movies.

Western Oregon University’s Land Acknowledgement
Western Oregon University in Monmouth, OR is located within the traditional homelands of the Luckiamute Band of Kalapuya. Following the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855 (Kalapuya etc. Treaty), Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to reservations in Western Oregon. Today, living descendants of these people are a part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians.
