North American Computational Linguistics Open (NACLO) competition

NACLO is a fun educational contest in which high-school students solve linguistic problems.

No prior knowledge of linguistics or second languages is necessary.

Professionals in linguistics, computational linguistics and language technologies use dozens of languages to create engaging problems that represent cutting edge issues in their fields. In solving these problems, students learn about the diversity and consistency of language, while exercising logic skills and experiencing a taste of natural-language processing in the 21st century.

Competition Dates

Open Round: Thursday, January 25, 2024, 9:00 am — 12:00 pm.

Western Oregon University is one of only two host sites in Oregon (the other is at a non-profit educational org in Beaverton). While we are primarily working with a group of students at Central High School in Monmouth-Independence, any eligible participants are welcome to join us for the Open Competition.

Where

• Building and Room assignment: Werner University Center, first floor, Santiam Room
• Parking: After you register, look for an email from Dr. Troyer on Tuesday or Wednesday. This will contain a pdf of a parking permit. The permit is for Zone 2 lots only, so the closest lot to Werner University Center is lot B as shown on this campus map.
• Please arrive at 8:30am
• Breakfast refreshments and post-competition lunch will be provided free of charge for all participants
• For any questions, contact the local organizer given below under the ‘Registration’ heading

Invitational Round: The top ten percent of Open Round performers nationwide will be invited to participate. The Invitational Round competition will take place on Thursday, March 24, 2024, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. If any participants who compete at the WOU site are invited, we will reserve a room for the Invitational Round.

International Olympiad: Eight students will be selected to represent the United States at the 21st International Linguistics Olympiad to be held in Brasilia, Brazil in July 2024.

The NACLO student registration page is at: https://naclo.org/registration_page.php. On the registration form choose “Western Oregon University (Monmouth, OR)” from the ‘site’ drop-down menu.

Participant Registration Deadline: Monday, January 22, 2024. Each participant must fill out the form at the link above.
