Student Led

The Freedom Center is a space completely led by student leaders.

Our History

Since 2006, the student body at Western Oregon has fought for a space that served underrepresented communities. Over the years, students faced challenges and letdowns throughout this process. Finally in 2021, we got what we have been fighting for, what is known today as The Freedom Center.

The Logo

The hand: Our hand is half-open to signify reaching for the stars and that the fighting is not at the forefront of what we do anymore.  We fought so hard to get here and for equality.

The blue line running through the logo and surrounding the hand: This is to symbolize water as a fluid and continuously moving thing. This is also flowing up which symbolizes the impossible feat it is to create this space for BIPOC, oppressed, and marginalized communities.
The shapes that surround the water flow: These are colored with various colors that are connected to the BIPOC mental health colors. These are to represent that students come in all shapes and sizes. The lines that flow through them are to represent the intersectionalities that everyone has. These are attached to the water line because when we come together it’s beautiful and powerful.
