Women have always played a vital role in shaping the world. Despite often being overlooked in historical narratives, women’s contributions have been foundational in politics, culture, science and society. March marks the annual celebration of Women’s History Month and the continuation of defying limitations, overcoming adversity and transforming communities. As we remember the trailblazers who came before, the fight for equality continues.

In the first wave of feminism, women fought for the 19th Amendment — ensuring the right to vote — alongside the right to education, the right to own property and the right to be legally recognized as independent people instead of property. Although the first wave is mainly remembered for its fight to vote, this period in time encapsulated challenging societal norms and breaking free from rigid domestic spheres. It took time for women’s voices to finally be heard in meaningful ways, but it was crucial for gender equality. Some notable first wave activist women included Susan B. Anthony, Emmeline Pankhurst, Sojourner Truth, Margaret Sanger, Jeannette Rankin, Maria Stewart, Dr. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee and Frances E.W. Harper.

During the second wave of feminism, Title VII — which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in employment — and Title IX — which prohibits sex-based discrimination in education — were passed in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The National Organization of Women was created in 1966, aiming to make women’s participation possible in all aspects of American life and to gain all the rights enjoyed by men. During this time, women couldn’t open credit cards in their own names — separate from their husbands — until 1974. Many of the modern day stereotypes of feminists — anti-family, bra burners, butch, lesbians and man-haters  — come from the second wave. There were other protests and conversations regarding race, equal pay, abortion, birth control and other reproductive rights. Some influential women from the second wave included Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Kate Millett and Jane Fonda.

The third wave of feminism focused on inclusion — which was what the previous waves struggled with — and recognizing that oppression can take many forms and will affect different people in different ways. During the ‘90s, society saw the rise of both “girly feminism,” or “lipstick feminism,” and “grrrl power.” This type focused on the belief that women can be feminists and still embrace their femininity. Grrrl power is also known as feminist punk bands that began in the PNW. This radical movement combined feminism, punk, music and politics, with the goal of challenging patriarchal standards. This wave focused on empowering women by acknowledging that, when one is free to choose their own path, their choice is a valid expression of one’s values and desires as a woman. Some important women during this time include Anita Hill, the Guerrilla Girls, Bikini Kill, Madonna, Queen Latifah, the American Girl dolls and Mary J. Blige.  

We are considered to be in the fourth wave of feminism. A consistent concern throughout the waves is access to reproductive healthcare. Some of the most notable events in the fourth wave include the 2004 March for Women’s Lives, the #MeToo movement — a way for young women of color to share their stories, specifically to promote the idea of “empowerment through empathy,” TIME’S UP organization — the take back the workplace protest — and “enough is enough,” where women insist upon a world where work is safe, fair and dignified for all kinds of people. The biggest protest happened Jan. 19, 2017: the Women’s March on Washington. This was the largest single day protest in U.S. history, with an estimated 3.3-5 million protesters nationwide. This march included many other issues — racial equity, immigration reform, reproductive rights, the environment and LGBTQ rights. Influential women and advocates are Madeleine Albright, Tarana Burke, Alyssa Milano, Kamala Harris and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. 

The fight for women’s rights and respect continues. A huge issue in society is widespread gender-based violence. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking, one in three women have experienced rape, physical violence and/or stalking and one in six college women have been sexually abused in a relationship.

There are other frightening statistics, but work is being done through education and legislation. The Violence Against Women Act provides housing protections for those who’ve experienced domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking to keep them safe and reduce the likelihood of experiencing homelessness.

There are many other problems, including a persistent gender pay gap, a lack of representation of women in leadership positions, limitations on reproductive rights, societal pressures around gender roles and equal access to education and healthcare — particularly in marginalized communities.

Here are some suggestions on how to participate in celebrating Women’s History Month:

Learn about notable women in history —

Read books — “The Radium Girls,” “I Am Malala,” “Feminism Is for Everybody,” “A Black Women’s History of the United States,” “Hidden Figures,” “She Persisted,” “The Joy Luck Club”

Movies — “Respect,” “Girlfriends,” “9 to 5,” “Thelma and Louise,” “A League of Their Own,” “Erin Brockovich,” “Brave,” “Promising Young Woman,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “The Color Purple,” “Frida,” “Mona Lisa Smile”

Support women-owned business — Donate to organizations that empower women and help support women in business.

Volunteer for women’s causes — Women’s shelters or organizations that focus on the empowerment of women and donate to women’s health organizations.

Celebrate women in your life — Personal celebrations can be as meaningful as public ones, like writing a letter or sending a card to women who’ve made a positive impact on one’s life, like family, friends, mentors or colleagues. Host a celebration or gathering with women who inspire you, such as lunch or coffee. Express appreciation for women in the workplace or community who are often behind the scenes.

Celebrating the intersectionality of women Supporting intersectional feminist organizations that advocate for causes such as the rights of women of color, LGBTQ+ women and disabled women; reading works by women from diverse backgrounds to better understand the unique challenges they face; listening to voices from marginalized communities and making sure that their stories are part of the conversation during Women’s History Month are all great steps.

At times it can be exhausting just being a woman. America Ferrera said it best, “It is literally impossible to be a woman. … We have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.” There are so many contradictory expectations for being a woman, which results in feeling overwhelmed and burnt out. In a world full of men, women just want to exist without being leered at, talked down to, cat-called, objectified, harassed, assaulted, raped, murdered.

Celebrating Women’s History Month is about more than just acknowledging the past — it’s about inspiring the present and future. As we continue to break down societal barriers, the stories of women serve as a powerful reminder of strength, resilience and the ongoing pursuit of equality. By reflecting on the progress made and acknowledging the work that’s yet to come, we can ensure that Women’s History Month has a lasting impact beyond just one month of recognition. Giving back

March 4, 2025, marks Western’s annual Giving Day — a way for people to donate to their chosen clubs, organizations, scholarships or other funds. Started in 2016, Giving Day has been an integral part of making sure the university and its students have the resources they need. 

Nearly every college and university has a day specifically for crowdfunding. For Western, it’s  “Howl from the Heart.” It is a component of “Wolves Rising: The Campaign for Western Oregon University,”a fundraising program launched Dec. 14, 2024, with an overall goal of raising $20 million for the university to better support students overall. 

Western has highlighted funds on the Giving Day website, including athletics, the Student Success Center, scholarships and the “Future Wolves Fund.” The website also promotes donating to the “Fund for WOU.” This is a general fund that will go toward the areas with the most need, such as campus maintenance and facilities, offsetting operating expenses and funding current campus activities. 

Every year, Giving Day gets bigger and better. This year, Western has a goal in sight of $300,000, compared to the nearly $250,000 that was reached last year. The crowdfunding day also has more than 60 funds to support, compared to last year’s 40 funds. 

On Giving Day 2024, the university created a service and volunteer aspect so students can give back to both Western and the surrounding communities. This year, the students’ community service will extend to Salem for park cleanup — an occupational therapy project. Alongside it, a blood drive on campus was hosted successfully. A need for student volunteers remains at Heron Pointe Senior Living in Monmouth to spend time with seniors from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on March 4. Students can sign up to volunteer by going to this Google Form.

If students want to find volunteer opportunities outside of Giving Day, a service fair will be held on campus on March 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Willamette room of the Werner University Center that will help organizations needing volunteers get connected with students. 

If a certain club, organization or other facet of Western isn’t listed on the website, donors can press the red “Make a Gift” button in the top right corner. This page allows donors to designate their gift to the place of their choice. 

Everyone is welcome to participate in Western’s Giving Day, including students, alumni, faculty, friends of the university and other community members. It is a great way for anyone to show their support, regardless of their affiliation with Western. 

If people would like to get more involved in Giving Day, and potentially win a $50 gift card, they can sign up to become a Giving Day Ambassador. 

“Giving Day Ambassadors are people just like you — students, staff, faculty, parents and friends of the university,” David Beasley, the director of development, annual giving and sponsorships, said in an email to the student body. “By signing up to be a Giving Day Ambassador, you can let alumni, friends, family, colleagues and others know about how they can support Western students.”

Two students can each win a gift card, with one student bringing in the most gifts and the other raising the most money. To become an ambassador, press the “Ambassador Sign-up” button on the Giving Day website. Then, fill out the short form and choose what program to support. After submitting the form, potential ambassadors will receive a unique donation link through email. When Giving Day arrives, they can share the link with others and give them the opportunity to donate to the ambassador’s chosen fund. 

If one does not receive a link from an ambassador and would still like to donate, many options are available, including calling 503-838-8814, visiting the Giving Day website — givingday.wou.edu — or going to The Cottage on Western’s campus and giving donations in-person. 

A Feb. 12 press release written by Maureen Brakke stated, “Join Western Oregon University on March 4, 2025, for Howl from the Heart. Make a meaningful contribution and help ensure that every student at Western has the resources they need to thrive.”

Western’s food pantry

Western’s food pantry is located in room 165 of the Welcome Center. It is open Tuesdays 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. for Western students and faculty only. It is open to the public 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Wednesdays and 2 – 6 p.m. Thursdays. Abby’s House — Western’s center for equity and gender justice — is the parent organization of the food pantry.

Everyone is welcome to utilize the food pantry on the allotted days, even including non-residents of Monmouth. There is also no maximum or minimum amount of income an individual needs to have to be a customer. Everything in the food pantry is free to all customers. 

Also located in room 165 of the Welcome Center is the Stitch Closet. The Stitch Closet provides clothes for individuals, free of charge. It has the same hours as the food pantry for the convenience of users. Like the food pantry, the Stitch Closet is also a part of Abby’s House. The concept for the Stitch Closet was imagined in 2020 and came to fruition fall 2021. 

Tarly Sineo, a first-year at Western majoring in psychology, started volunteering at the food pantry and the Stitch Closet as soon as it opened for the 2024-25 school year. “I took multiple steps to ensure that I got to volunteer the first day it was available to me,” said Sineo. 

Student volunteers are integral in ensuring the organization runs smoothly. “(I make) sure that the floors are clear, everything’s stocked correctly, clothing racks are clear and we’re using the right hangers. Just general maintenance,” said Sineo.

Sineo is passionate about helping students and members of the community and making sure they have the resources they need. “It means a lot to me. Pretty early (in the term) I figured that I’d probably be bored and have a lot of hours just kind of sitting around my room … So I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone; busy myself, and make the community a bit better for the people around me.” 

Food pantries are an important part of many communities, and it is especially beneficial for students. Western’s food pantry is helping to battle food insecurity among students, with college campuses statistically having more people who struggle.

“It’s a really valuable asset,” said Sineo. “Some (meal plans) don’t get to three meals a day on all of the weekdays.” The food pantry also helps anyone who is hosting community events — such as a Thanksgiving gathering or a residence hall event — get the materials and resources they need. 

Western’s food pantry put together turkey baskets for community members. The baskets have uncooked turkey or ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, cranberry sauce and the ingredients to make green bean casserole. 

“It’s a program for people who might not have the money to get a full turkey or the circumstances to be able to get a bunch of different Thanksgiving food for their family,” said Sineo.

Much of the food that Western’s food pantry offers is provided by a Salem food bank — Marion Polk Food Share. The rest of the food supply is a collection of donations from people in the community. 

The food pantry follows a client-choice model of shopping. Customers can choose their items instead of receiving a preselected bag of groceries. This ensures that people will use everything they take, instead of wasting the things they either don’t like or can’t eat due to allergies. 

There is no limit to the number of times people can shop at the food pantry. They can take as much food as they need as long as they are courteous of other customers who also need to use the food pantry. Once customers have finished shopping, they weigh their food and anonymously fill out a checkout survey. The personal information of shoppers is never collected. 

Individuals can support the food pantry and the Stitch Closet by volunteering or giving donations. They accept donations of food, clothes, hygiene products, pet food and school supplies. Donations are collected in a box in front of the food pantry. Individuals can also donate money to the food pantry through Abby’s House. 

For food donations, homemade goods and meals from restaurants will not be accepted. Store-bought foods should have a visible expiration date and nutrition label. It should be in the original packaging with any lids and seals still intact. 

For clothing donations, the Stitch Closet will not accept anything that shows offensive words or visuals, or clothes that are damaged or dirty. 

If donors are unsure if an item will be accepted, they can take it to a student volunteer who will inspect it.

Western’s community garden

Located on campus near Rice Auditorium, behind the in-progress new Student Success Center building, a community garden grows despite being surrounded by construction. Currently, it is being taken care of solely by Western alumnus Rick Tingle. The garden consists of several compost piles, strawberries, potatoes, raspberries, squash and many other fruits and vegetables. It also is home to a satellite dish, which is in the process of being dismantled. 

Although the garden is in a fenced-off area, Tingle planted raspberries along the fence specifically for students to graze. “It used to be that people knew the garden was here only by coming down this trail and they would come by and pick the raspberries,” he said. Eventually, he wants the fence to be covered with additional plants, such as blueberries and cherry tomatoes. 

“Every one of these plants I started on my balcony… I got to know every one of these plants, and I’ve watered them by hand every morning since late winter and early spring,” Tingle said. 

His hard work in the garden was coming to fruition, with cucumbers, tomatoes and Japanese eggplant being harvested.

Tingle graduated in the spring of 2024 from Western with a Master of Science in Criminal Justice: Justice Studies. “Before that, here at (Western), I got my bachelor’s of anthropology and psychology and all of those things just dance. They interact,” he said. Before graduating with his master’s degree, Tingle wrote a research paper about how community gardens could help solve food inequity problems on college campuses — part of the reason why Tingle remains at Western, although no longer a student.

“I don’t mind being one of those invisible people doing the hard work in the garden. I just want the results of the hard work to be visible and effective,” Tingle wrote in a document. He is working toward the goal of “providing healthy foods for hungry people” at Western. 

Tingle has been in the community garden every single day for two years. Even when the heat rose to 100 degrees during the summer, he was still planting, watering and keeping up his composting project. 

Last autumn, Tingle began working with Western’s food pantry. Every Tuesday, the food pantry has supplied him with food that they would have otherwise had to throw away. Tingle is given a wide variety of expired or rotten food, such as potatoes, rice, bread and even cupcakes, before adding it to the different compost piles within the garden.

“The strawberries weren’t doing anything. Maybe the soil hadn’t been replenished. And then I got maybe 150 pounds of potatoes,” said Tingle — he ended up crushing the potatoes and mixing them in with the soil. In turn, the strawberries started growing with full force, with a sea of red potatoes growing in between the strawberry plants. 

On sunny days, Tingle covers the compost piles with cardboard to make sure that the compost-eating creatures stay up top. “I’ve trimmed, I’ve pulled all the weeds and I keep it watered along the fence. I use those weeds with the compost,” Tingle said. He also mixes unexpected things like popcorn kernels into the compost. “This is what’s fun to me. It’s like an experimental compost.” Since he expects there to be much more food thrown out because of the start of the school year, Tingle has considered making another row and starting a new composting project altogether.

Ideally, the garden will become a place where students can work, enjoy their hobbies and make connections with other students. In the community garden, students can learn about gardening and composting and also have a space to feel comfortable and partake in Tingle’s “experimental composting.” 

“From my research, one of the key points was that students need to feel comfortable in the garden space and their needs should be considered while planning the layout of the garden,” wrote Tingle. “Students need to interact in an enjoyable, creative atmosphere.” 

“I want to let people know that there is a garden here and that it has been in transition, but we could use help right now beautifying it,” Tingle said. Success has been evident in Tingle taking care of the garden by himself, but he needs help making it accessible and appealing to all students. Any student can volunteer, whether it’s picking weeds, planting, general maintenance or painting the planter boxes.

“The last class that I did was a sustainability class because all of my research, all my findings, for my paper…  I learned about permaculture. And one thing about permaculture is design. It’s a creative design, there’s an aspect that you have to make. The garden needs to be more than just planting and eating vegetables,” said Tingle.

Volunteers could also help make a website for the community garden. “Together we can begin to network and consider methods of a working garden website where people can communicate where help might be needed. The website may also be developed so that students might be able to check for real-time status updates of their plants in the garden,” he wrote.

Since 1969, SOLVE — a nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental cleanups  —  has prioritized “taking care of Oregon” by organizing statewide cleanup initiatives for the coast, rivers, forests and parks.

In honor of Earth Day, SOLVE has dedicated over a week’s worth of events to continue to make Oregon clean for future generations.
