The 2025 NCAA men’s basketball tournament is in full swing, pulling in views from fans across the nation with its signature blend of unexpected upsets and standout performances. As teams battle for the national championship, the tournament showcases an array of talent and grit, with powerhouse programs living up to expectations and underdog teams defying the odds. With the journey to the Final Four well underway, the 2025 edition of March Madness is proving to be one to remember.
This year’s tournament has featured multiple No. 1 seeds, including the Houston Cougars, Florida Gators, Duke Blue Devils and Auburn Tigers. Each of these teams have dominated throughout their seasons, positioning themselves as favorites for the national title. The Houston Cougars, known for their lockdown defense, have proved to be one of the most disciplined teams in college basketball. Their ability to shut down opponents and control the tempo of games have been key factors in their success this season.
The Florida Gators have shown their ability to adapt to any playstyle, driving them to a deep run in the tournament. Their dynamic offense, combined with an aggressive defensive game plan, has made them an extremely tough matchup for any opponent. The Duke Blue Devils, under the guidance of head coach Jon Scheyer, have crafted a powerhouse of players. Headlined by freshman phenom Cooper Flagg, Duke has been able to balance young talent and depth, making them a dangerous team in the East Region. Auburn, led by senior forward and Naismith Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome, has dominated the paint and used their versatile guard play to run through opponents on their route to the Sweet 16.
Several players have already captured the national spotlight with their standout performances. Cooper Flagg, an 18-year-old sensation from Duke, delivered a historic performance in the second round against Arizona State, recording 30 points, six rebounds, seven assists and three blocks. His skill set and composure under pressure have shown scouts and fans alike his status as a top prospect for the 2025 NBA draft. Another standout performer has been Purdue’s Braden Smith, who has been one of the most consistent guards in the nation. As the Big Ten Player of the Year, Smith has been the main contributor to Purdue’s offense, finishing the season as the conference leader in assists and second in steals.
As the tournament advances into the Sweet 16 and beyond, the anticipation is building for tough matchups that will determine the path to the national championship. One of the most anticipated matchups was between the Auburn Tigers and Michigan State Spartans, where the Tigers secured a 70-64 victory over the Spartans. Also, the matchup between the Purdue Boilermakers and the Houston Cougars lived up to the hype, as the Houston Cougars edged out the Purdue Boilermakers 62-60.
The 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament has also showcased a combination of exceptional talent and thrilling games, leading to a Final Four featuring UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and UConn. UCLA, making its inaugural Final Four appearance, has been led by center Lauren Betts, whose dominance in the paint has been a game-changer. Texas returns to this stage for the first time since 2003, with standout performances from Madison Booker. The defending champions, South Carolina under Coach Dawn Staley, continue to dominate the college scene, marking their fifth consecutive Final Four. UConn, led by arguably the best player in NCAA women’s basketball at the moment, Paige Bueckers, aims to end a nine-year championship drought, with Bueckers delivering remarkable games, including a 31-point game against Southern Cal.
As the dust settles and the Final Four draws near, the excitement of the March Madness tournament continues to build. With established powerhouses fighting to sustain their dominance and underdog teams refusing to back down, this year’s tournament embodies the spirit of college basketball. Fans across the country will remain glued to their screens until they are able to witness who will come out on top and cut down the nets in Phoenix.

“Patterns in Nature”

A new art exhibition, “Patterns in Nature,” was created by Jennifer Bracy, an art and design professor at Western. It was put on display Feb. 20 and will run through March 21. Located on the second floor of Hamersly Library, the exhibition stays true to its title, depicting many patterns that are commonly found in the natural world. 

Bracy has been a professor at Western for 16 years. She created the exhibition while on sabbatical. 

“I just look at (the exhibition) and it feels very rewarding,” Bracy said. “I made a lot, I accomplished a lot. I was productive, but also I was ready to get back in the classroom and was feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.”

Seven years prior, while on another sabbatical, Bracy created a set of works also inspired by nature’s patterns, however, she knew that she wanted to explore deeper within that subject. 

“Patterns in Nature” contains many series of works, with some being deliberately planned and others being more spontaneous. 

Bracy explored techniques, specifically in print-making, that were experimental or non-traditional. One thing that surprised her while creating this exhibition was how many different tools she could experiment with, including a potato masher and foam rollers wrapped with bubble wrap or string. 

Bracy wanted play and experimentation to be the driving force. “Some whole series in here came about just through play. No plan, no idea, no research necessarily.”

Contrarily, Bracy has researched and planned out many of the other works.

“I really enjoy the research part of things, like learning more about what those patterns reveal, what nature can do, how efficient it is or how strong it is, or how good it is at adapting … these are all things that kind of show up when you start looking at those patterns,” Bracy said. 

One pattern that Bracy researched was the connection of opposites, such as the pattern of DNA. 

“The DNA helix is actually a pairing of opposites. This idea of nature putting things — opposites — together and it forming something incredibly meaningful or useful, it’s just one of thousands of ways we as humans can learn,” Bracy said. “We are more divided than ever right now. There’s so much we can learn in that lesson of acknowledging that we are connected and working through those differences and figuring out how to go forward anyway.”

At the heart of the exhibition is the series that inspired the name “Patterns in Nature.” It includes six works of art with different patterns, each accompanied by a homophone pair — two words with the same pronunciation but with different spellings and meanings.

One piece in the series showcases the words “hours” and “ours,” with concentric circles to represent the rings of a tree. “They represent time passing and growth. ‘Ours’ speaks to the arrogance of humanity and thinking nature is our domain, we own it, we can do what we want with it.”

Bracy’s favorite homophone pair in the series is “vein” and “vain,” which is shown with branching patterns similar to the veins in leaves or the veins in humans. “Vain” refers again to humanity’s hubris and arrogance. 

Another series surrounding words and typography, titled “Wordcraft,” is viewer interactive. It was Bracy’s way of letting the viewer experiment and play, just as she did while creating the series. Each work in the series is color coded to distinguish prefixes, base words and suffixes. Viewers can create new words by making different combinations of the fragments of words.

Words are an area of interest that Bracy finds fascinating, often incorporating them into her works, just as she incorporates her other passions into her art.

“The subjects that creep back in recurrently are nature, especially from an environmental standpoint, how humans mess it up and other things related to social justice. So I do look at art and design as a way to talk about important things,” Bracy said. 

The technical aspect of the exhibition that Bracy is most proud of is the incorporation of thread and cross stitch. She loves “the symbolism of something being stitched, the idea of a thread in the work as a theme, the idea of interconnectedness.” The thread in “Patterns in Nature” shows how humans and nature are intertwined. 

Bracy used thread to create topographic maps in a series about climate change. The six small pieces of art that make up the series distinctively stand out in “Patterns in Nature.” According to Bracy, “it’s a more overt statement about our interfering and messing up with nature, whereas the other ones may be a little more nuanced and a little more subtle or open to different interpretations.”

Bracy wants viewers to tap into their curiosity and dig deep to see these patterns in a new light. She wants people to realize how extensive the patterns are, how much depth they really have and how many different settings they occur in.

After people see “Patterns in Nature,” Bracy hopes that “maybe next time they’re in nature, they’ll see the fallen tree and the pond ripple and (see that) those are related and they share some kind of common DNA.”

Western vs Fraser

Western’s men’s basketball team secured their first conference victory Jan. 16, snapping their losing-streak. The Wolves, who faced a challenging start to the season, put up a strong performance in their win against Simon Fraser University. 

California native Jahville Collins, a fifth-year for the “Wolves,” dominated throughout the whole game, scoring a career high of 34 points on an efficient 57% from the field. Even with Collins’ performance, the Red Leafs led by as many as 7 points in the first half. Despite the slight point differential, Simon Fraser wasn’t able to pull away, allowing time for Western to get together and overcome their deficit. The “Wolves” were able to do exactly that, fighting back and narrowing the score, and by halftime, the “Wolves” held a 37-36 lead. Coming into the second half, the Red Leafs went on a tear. Simon Fraser, which is 1-6 in conference play, gave themselves a comfortable 9 point lead with about 10 minutes of play left. The “Wolves” were in need of a leader, but they responded with a 16-2 run. Collins continued to score the basketball, but Simon Fraser refused to give up. Luke Howard, a forward for the Red Leafs, was a force in the paint, scoring an impressive 25 points during the game. Howard was getting to his spots the whole second half, and Western didn’t seem to have an answer for him. Luckily, “Wolves first-year Mario Williams stepped up when his team needed him the most, scoring three after three to keep them in the contest. As both teams continued to battle, it was evident that the game was going to be decided at the last second. With only 5 seconds remaining in the match, the score was 77-76 in Western’s favor. With the game on the line, Fraser was forced to foul Western guard Jason Gallant, who went on to shoot free throws. Gallant, who is Western’s leading scorer and a 78% free throw shooter on the season, sank the first free throw, putting his team up 78-76. As he shot his second free throw, it hit the front iron and missed, giving the Red Leafs possession with 5.8 seconds remaining. Both teams scrambled to get to their spots as the time wound down, as Simon Fraser had no timeouts to call. The Red Leafs rushed towards their basket, but there simply wasn’t enough time to get off a quality shot, forcing them to throw up a halfcourt heave, missing the rim completely, leaving the score 78-76 with 0 seconds on the clock. Western proudly took home this conference win, and they look forward to taking even more as the season progresses.

UCLA struggles

Mick Cronin, the head coach of the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team, has recently found himself in an unwelcome spotlight. Despite a strong 10-2 non-conference record, the Bruins have crumbled in Big Ten play, posting a disappointing 3-4 record so far. This slump has visibly weighed on Cronin, who has not held back in publicly expressing his frustration with his team’s performance.
Following a 94-75 loss to Michigan, Cronin’s emotions boiled over during a tense post-game press conference. “We’re soft … we’re too soft to play hard enough,” he stated bluntly, before going a step further by calling out individual players by name. Forward Tyler Bilodeau, along with guards Dylan Andrews, Sebastian Mack and Kobe Johnson, were all singled out in his remarks. Cronin didn’t stop there, however, as he shifted his criticism toward his coaching staff as well.
“I come in, and I have more passion, energy and pride than anybody in there,” Cronin declared. “Right now, I’m frustrated with my players and my staff. The toughest guy in the room can’t be me every day. I’m upset with everybody in that locker room — my assistant coaches and my players.”
He even went on to highlight his own career accomplishments, adding, “I don’t need to do anything else. I’ve got almost 500 wins, and I’m only 53 … it’s a joke.”
These remarks quickly sparked national attention across the sports world, drawing criticism and sparking a debate about Cronin’s leadership approach. Basketball analyst Jay Bilas voiced his opinion during a live broadcast, stating, “Coaches like to talk about accountability a lot, but I don’t think that’s what accountability really looks like. That, to me, looks simply like blame. I heard a lot of ‘I’ — ‘I’m doing this, I’m doing that — and nobody else is doing it.’”
Cronin’s unusual meltdown has obviously ignited controversy, as it’s rare for a head coach to publicly shift the blame away from themselves while their team is clearly struggling. Since the polarizing press conference, the Bruins have continued to fall, losing two of their last three conference games, putting their season further in jeopardy.

As the Bruins fight to turn their season around, all eyes will remain on Cronin to see whether his unfiltered approach can spark a much-needed comeback, or if it will continue to disrupt the dynamics within his team.

“Wicked” on Broadway

“Wicked” is a musical on Broadway following the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West in “The Wizard of Oz,” the beloved classic from 1939, before Dorothy ever made it out of Kansas. Displaying in Portland, Oregon, from Oct. 16 to Nov. 3 at the Keller Auditorium, “Wicked” was filled with bright color, magical sets, beautiful voices and many shades of green.

“Wicked” does not require previous knowledge or recent viewing of “The Wizard of Oz” to be a spectacular experience, although references are common throughout the show. In fact, “Wicked” takes the story of “The Wizard of Oz” and twists it into something else entirely: a show surrounding different facets of love, friendships, social expectations, justice and of course, wickedness.

The play heavily focuses on friendship — or, rather, what turned into friendship. The play begins with Glinda during “The Wizard of Oz,” when the Wicked Witch of the West has been defeated, and she comes down in a bubble — a heavy circular mechanism that lifts and moves with Glinda’s actress, Austen Danielle Bohmer, standing on it, her royal dress beyond sparkly — to inform the people of the eradication of “wickedness.” She admits, however, that she knew Elphaba — and the play swings into motion with the two characters back in the past, students at Shiz University.

A description for “Wicked” summarizes: “Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships … until the world decides to call one ‘good,’ and the other one ‘wicked.’”

The concept of “good” versus “wicked” is reiterated and twisted throughout the play. It is obvious that from the beginning, Glinda — known as Galinda throughout the first half of the show  — is described as good and pure, yet is the one to bully and harass Elphaba when they are roommates in school. It is because of Glinda that Elphaba is ridiculed at the mercy of their peers due to her green skin and “wickedness.” Eventually, however, they bond as Glinda expresses empathy at last.

And Elphaba, being so “wicked,” is the one to campaign for the rights of the talking animals in their world and act bravely despite her fear. At one point, another character describes Elphaba as feigning confidence, despite her desire to be loved and accepted to the point of no return. 

Particularly dazzling was Galinda and Elphaba’s venture into Emerald City, sparkling on stage in various shades of bright green. This is the first time in the show that Elphaba feels comfortable, as up until now, her character has been mocked and teased. She has been called to meet the Wizard — the one of great magic — only to find and uncover corruption at his hands in Oz. Elphaba refuses to indulge in his evil cause, despite Glinda’s allowance for the Wizard’s actions as she seeks the Wizard’s approval — another play on good and wickedness. Is goodness just seeking acceptance? Is it still good if nobody agrees?

In order to make Elphaba “wicked,” the show pins her for the mutilation and near-eradication of the animals in Oz, which was the Wizard’s doing all along. Because of this, Elphaba must flee.

“Defying Gravity,” the most anticipated song of the night and by far one of the most well-known, was shiveringly beautiful and performed by Lauren Samuels. The first half of the song, Glinda and Elphaba circle one another, with the colors growing increasingly bright as they lean into singing in unison.

Elphaba darts off stage, leaving Galinda to sing solo, until she reappears behind her — in the air with her broom, dangling above the stage as it covers in fog and lights that follow her that replicate the look of stained glass, spilling onto the stage and crowd. Elphaba’s actress delivered an exceptional performance, receiving an outstanding ovation afterward as the play took its intermission.

Something to note is the way “Wicked” shades the stage in regards to Glinda and Elphaba’s signature colors. Glinda is mostly baby blue in the performances, despite her affinity for pink in the original. When the two are singing on stage, often the backdrop resembles the look of twilight, fading from emerald to blue.

The Wizard, being Blake Hammond in this performance, often hides in a mechanical box with a face — the Oz Head — that rears, moves and shouts horrifically. The movement is smooth and flawless, with lights flashing red across the stage when he expresses fury. “The head is supposed to be terrifying,” explained a designer. It drips smoke across the stage and invokes a sense of discomfort and fear as it moves.

One complicated part of creating a prequel is to line the character up, especially if the protagonist is to be the villain, with the original storyline. Elphaba would not be a loveable character if not good; but she cannot be good, or else “The Wizard of Oz” is invalid. “Wicked” was able to twist the concept of wicked so well that Elphaba is both wicked and good — claiming wickedness as an identity, understanding that she will never be or look like Glinda, nor like anyone else — but still can make the right choices. It is evident that Glinda does what is easy rather than what is right, as Elphaba makes difficult decisions, condemning herself, in order to do what is good.

Later on, Elphaba sings the following in “No Good Deed”: “Was I really seeking good, or just seeking attention? Is that all good deeds are when looked at with an ice-cold eye? … So be it then, let all Oz be agreed, I am wicked through and through.”

“Wicked” is a fantastic demonstration of the complexity and duality of people, as well as how hard it can be to stand alone in the face of adversity and injustice. Both Elphaba and Glinda look past their differences to make a bond nobody expected, usurping expectations and changing the world for the better.

Western falls short

Following an eventful homecoming week, Western students and fans were eager for the highlight of the weekend, the homecoming football game. The Western Wolves took on Texas A&M Kingsville in a high-stakes, much-anticipated match. With both teams entering with strong records — Wolves at 5-0 in conference play and Kingsmen at 3-2 — this game was set to be an exciting showdown that would test each team’s grit and endurance.
Jordan McCarty started the game off with a 6-yard run into the end zone, while freshman kicker Keaton Emmett finished it off with an extra point, adding a total of seven points to the scoreboard for the Wolves. It wasn’t long until the opposing offense responded though, as the Kingsmen followed up with a touchdown and extra point of their own.
Going into the second quarter, the score was tied at 7-7. Both teams were getting stops on the defensive end, but Andrew Simpson’s impressive interception midway through the quarter shifted momentum in the Wolves’ favor. Things were looking great for Western, as they continued to gain yards and attention from fans, but unfortunately, they weren’t able to capitalize off of Simpson’s play. The possessions continued to go back and forth, but the Kingsmen were able to score seven points right before halftime, making the score 7-14 in Texas A&M’s favor going into the half.
In an intense third quarter, the Wolves faced an uphill battle as their opponents widened the gap with a touchdown and extra point. This set the score to 7-21. However, a strong run from redshirt sophomore Jermaine Land revived the Wolves’ offense, putting them in position for a much-needed touchdown. Soon after, the Wolves struck, with a crucial touchdown pass and a successful kick to narrow the Kingsmen’s lead to just seven points. Their defense held strong, stopping the opposing offense and leaving the Wolves trailing 14-21 as they headed into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter started with a bang as the Wolves pulled off an impressive series of plays. A well-placed throw found senior wide receiver Damon Hickok, who made an acrobatic catch for a massive gain. Another pass to Hickok set the Wolves within 20 yards of the end zone. The next play, redshirt sophomore Kainoa Sayre had a strategic run, placing them only three yards from tying the game. Despite their efforts, a costly fumble on third down turned the possession over. Yet shortly after, the Wolves’ defense kept the dream alive, capped off by an outstanding interception from redshirt junior Daron Ulrich Jr. However, they couldn’t convert on their final chances, even after blocking a critical punt. Ultimately, Texas A&M ran out the clock, leaving the Wolves just shy of a comeback.
The Wolves — 5-3 overall, 5-1 Lone Star Conference — have a chance to redeem themselves next week as they travel to take on Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Spring Awakening

Written in 1891 and adapted to Broadway as a rock musical in 2006, “Spring Awakening” is a story that is still relevant today. The musical goes back and forth between modern alternative rock and themes from the 19th century. The WOU Theatre Department took on this multidimensional musical and worked to create something special with it.

Every single show was ASL interpreted. There was a reason for this — the interpreters interacted with the actors, adding a unique dynamic to the production. Parts of the songs were signed by the actors themselves, which gave the story more depth and emotion, as well as accessibility.

“Spring Awakening” is not a story to be taken lightly. Topics such as suicide, sex and abortion can make the play uncomfortable for some, but it is still a crucial story to tell. Today, the main themes of the musical continue to resonate with audiences.

Jacob Fritts and Kelsey Wallace brought maximum energy to the stage as Melchior and Wendla. They captured the audience’s attention both together and apart. The dynamics of each character made the story intriguing and relatable.

Moritz, a tormented young man, was played by Frank Kern, a second-year at Western. “Spring Awakening is themed heavily around how we raise our kids today, how we teach and support them… I feel it is important to recognize the impact that my performance might have on the audience, particularly my peers… audience members see the character of Moritz through the lens of me, a transgender actor, which inherently added a level of delicacy to how I approached my portrayal of his journey,” Kern said. There wasn’t a single dry eye in the audience when Moritz passed away.

Maddux Gillett, a sophomore who played Georg, a classmate of Mortiz and piano player, said, “…Georg’s solo in ‘Touch Me’ is near and dear to my heart… it is so freeing to own the song and share that with the audience.” Gillett’s energy lit up all of Rice Auditorium. 

Lexy Bolsinger, a senior at Western and “Spring Awakening’s” assistant director and fight choreographer, said, “My favorite part was bringing Hanschen and Ernst’s story to life. As a queer person, it is an honor to share all aspects of sex education. It was beautiful to hear audience members walking out feeling seen.”

All the cast and crew worked hard to make sure every detail was in place. Whether it was intimacy, fights or dance, each choreographed move was intentional. Each song and line was clearly rehearsed many times over. The WOU Theatre Department has once again impressed audiences with its talent and will continue to do so in the future.
