Sunday, March 9, 2025, the clocks will “spring forward.” This typically happens on the second Sunday in March, and is practiced to make better use of daylight during the longer days of spring and summer by shifting an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. This means that the clocks on March 9 will jump to 3 a.m. instead of going through the second hour. Springing forward is paired with “falling back,” which happens in the fall — hence the name. Most might feel groggy and out of sync during this time due to the interruption of the circadian rhythm. The body operates on a natural sleep-wake cycle influenced by light and darkness. This jump in time can cause one’s internal clock to get out of sync. Preparing for springing forward doesn’t have to be difficult. One can ease into the time change with some simple steps. 

Gradually adjust sleep schedule — Begin by shifting one’s bedtime and wake-up time 15 minutes earlier each day. Incremental change helps the body to gradually adapt to the new time, so it doesn’t shock one’s system when the clock jumps forward. To make things easier, avoid using phones or other electronic devices before bed, as blue light can interfere with the natural sleep cycle.

Get plenty of sunlight — Exposure to natural light plays a crucial role in regulating one’s internal body clock — circadian rhythm. The more sunlight one gets, the easier it will be for the body to adapt to the time change. As the days get longer, spend some time outdoors in the morning and early afternoon. Morning sunlight resets the circadian rhythm, signaling that it’s time to wake up and be active. 

Stay active — Physical activity plays an important role in helping the body adjust to the time change. Exercising in the late afternoon or early evening can help one to feel more awake and energized during the day, while also promoting better sleep at night. A light walk or stretching exercises can make a significant difference in how one feels. Be sure to avoid intense workouts too close to bedtime, as they can interfere with one’s ability to sleep. 

Monitor diet — Eating habits can have a surprising effect on how well one can adjust to daylight saving time. In the days leading up to the time change, one should try to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Foods that are rich in magnesium — leafy greens, nuts and seeds — and melatonin — cherries or almonds — can promote better sleep. 

Prepare your environment — One’s sleep environment is key to getting quality rest. Make sure one’s bedroom is dark, quiet and cool. Consider black out curtains or an eye mask to block out the early morning light and try using a white noise machine or earplugs if one is sensitive to nighttime noises. 

Stay hydrated — Dehydration can make one feel sluggish and tired. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and avoid alcohol or excessive caffeine, which can dehydrate and disrupt sleep. 

Although springing forward during daylight saving time can disrupt one’s routine, taking some simple steps can make a world of difference. Gradually adjusting sleep, getting more sunlight, staying active, monitoring one’s diet and staying hydrated while preparing one’s personal environment are some of the ways that one could prepare. As we look forward to nicer weather, springing forward in time is a small bump in the road.

All-Star Weekend

The 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend was a three-day spectacle, bringing together the league’s top talent, celebrities and passionate fans for an unforgettable celebration of basketball. Held from Feb. 14 – 16 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the event took over Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors. It delivered thrilling competitions, including the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest, the Starry 3-Point Contest and the much-anticipated All-Star Game. This 74th edition of the NBA’s marquee midseason event struck a perfect balance between tradition and innovation, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
The weekend kicked off on Friday with the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, where musicians, actors, athletes and social media influencers took center stage. Team Bonds, led by MLB legend Barry Bonds and rapper 2 Chainz, faced off against Team Rice, coached by NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice and viral sensation Khaby Lame. The game delivered plenty of entertainment, from comedian Kevin Hart’s surprisingly sharp playmaking to Grammy-winning artist J. Cole’s smooth jump shooting. In a contested matchup, Team Bonds came out with the victory, with actor and model Rome Flynn earning MVP honors for his all-around performance.
Following the celebrity showdown, the Rising Stars Challenge showcased the league’s most promising young talent in a fast-paced, tournament-style format. Four teams — Team T, Team C, Team G League and Team M — battled in target-score games. In the semifinals, Team C worked past Team T, 40-34, while Team G League edged out a nail-biting 40-39 victory over Team M. The championship matchup saw Team C dominate Team G League with a 25-14 win, fueled by an outstanding performance from San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle, who was named MVP.
Saturday’s festivities began with the NBA All-Star Practice, giving fans an exclusive look at their favorite stars in action. The relaxed practice session featured lighthearted drills, team bonding moments and behind-the-scenes interviews. Later in the day, the NBA HBCU Classic took center stage, spotlighting two historically Black colleges and universities in a competitive matchup. The game not only showcased rising talent, but also reinforced the NBA’s ongoing commitment to supporting HBCU athletics and education.

The evening’s main event, State Farm All-Star Saturday Night, brought the action to another level with three of the most highly anticipated skill-based competitions.
The Kia Skills Challenge featured four teams: Team Cavs (Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley), Team Rooks (Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr), Team Spurs (Chris Paul, Victor Wembanyama) and Team Warriors (Draymond Green, Moses Moody). After a difficult series of dribbling, passing and shooting challenges, Team Cavs emerged victorious, with Mitchell’s leadership and Mobley’s versatility stealing the show.
Next came the Starry 3-Point Contest, where eight elite sharpshooters — Tyler Herro, Buddy Hield, Darius Garland, Jalen Brunson, Damian Lillard, Cade Cunningham, Cameron Johnson and Norman Powell — competed for the title of the NBA’s most precise marksman. In a thrilling finale, Tyler Herro beat Buddy Hield with a clutch shot on his last rack, while also preventing Damian Lillard from achieving a potential three-peat.
The night reached its climax with the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest, where Mac McClung, Stephon Castle, Andre Jackson Jr. and Matas Buzelis put on an impressive display of athleticism. McClung stole the show once again, successfully defending his title. He threw down a series of never-before-seen acrobatic dunks that earned him perfect scores from every judge. His performance capped off an unforgettable Saturday night.
Sunday night introduced a brand-new format for the 74th NBA All-Star Game, altering the traditional matchup into a four-team mini-tournament. Each squad, composed of eight players, was drafted by honorary general managers. These managers and teams included Charles Barkley’s “Chuck’s Global Stars,” Shaquille O’Neal’s “Shaq’s OGs,” Kenny Smith’s “Kenny’s Young Stars,” and Candace Parker’s “Candace’s Rising Stars.”
The tournament consisted of two semifinal games played to a target score of 40, followed by a championship game played to 50. In the first semifinal, Chuck’s Global Stars defeated Kenny’s Young Stars, 41-32, while Shaq’s OGs narrowly overcame Candace’s Rising Stars, 42-35. The final matchup saw Shaq’s OGs dominate, securing a 50-36 victory over Chuck’s Global Stars.
Playing in his home arena, Stephen Curry delivered a masterclass in shooting for Shaq’s OGs. Curry dazzled the crowd with his signature deep threes and effortless playmaking, and fans erupted when he sealed the championship with a spectacular half-court shot, solidifying his MVP honors and capping off a thrilling conclusion to the tournament.
The 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend successfully combined elite competition with top-tier entertainment, giving fans a weekend that will be remembered for years to come. As the NBA continues to evolve, its annual midseason classic remains a thrilling celebration of the sport, uniting athletes and fans alike in a shared love for the game.

Inner peace in politics

Politics can be hard to escape, and it’s been especially hard to find peace with what’s been happening lately in the world, whether it’s the latest elected official, new executive order, the ongoing ideological battles resulting in increasing polarization or the spread of misinformation. Politics have always been heated, but the most recent election has brought out the extremes. While it is important to stay informed, it’s also crucial to protect one’s mental and emotional peace. Here are some practical strategies to help navigate the chaotic world of politics without sacrificing one’s well-being. 

Limit media consumption — Many things may feel out of control with the fast changes of this nation, but one thing we have control over is the amount of political news consumed. The media thrives on sensationalism. Constant exposure to negative headlines or partisan commentary can contribute to stress and anxiety, resulting in nihilism. Countering these negative impacts by setting a designated amount of time each day for political news can be beneficial. This could be looking at what’s going on during breakfast or after work, instead of doom scrolling throughout the day. 

Another way is to be intentional about where one gets their news. Always choose reputable, balanced sources of information that focus on facts rather than emotion-driven content. Some news networks that are mostly unbiased include @realtalkingfish on Instagram, The Guardian, Associated Press, NPR and the Wall Street Journal.  

Set boundaries with social media — Platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter), Facebook and Instagram often fuel polarizing political discourse. Political debates, heated arguments and the spread of misinformation can quickly turn “for you” pages into battlefields. While social media can be a powerful tool for staying informed, it can also become a toxic environment if not managed well. 

One can take control by actively seeking out posts and discussions that promote healthy perspectives and unfollowing topics/accounts that trigger stress or anger. It is also important to know when to step back from platforms that no longer benefit one’s mental health. There’s nothing wrong with taking a digital detox every once in a while. Disconnecting from the online world helps to reset and refocus on different aspects of one’s life. 

Engage in politics in moderation — While it’s important to be informed on what’s going on in the world, excessive engagement in politics can drain one’s energy. It’s extremely easy to fall down the rabbit hole of endless debates, commentary and updates. While it’s good to participate in democracy, it’s also okay to take a break from the constant political conversation. One should focus on meaningful conversations with others who respect differing opinions, and avoid conversations when they become toxic. Remember that one is allowed to step back and save energy for moments that matter most. 

Prioritize self-care — With all of politics’ unpredictability and polarization, they can take a toll on one’s mental and emotional health. Self-care is an effective way to combat stress. One should take time for activities that bring joy and relaxation — reading a book, going for a walk, practicing yoga or spending time with friends and family. Exercise is also important for managing stress. Physical activity helps by releasing endorphins, which are the body’s natural form of stress relief. Also, when one is feeling overwhelmed by political events, one should consider practicing mindfulness and meditation to center oneself and become grounded. 

Practice emotional detachment — This is one of the most effective ways to protect one’s peace. This doesn’t mean abandoning one’s values or disengaging from important causes. Instead, it prioritizes learning how to emotionally distance oneself from the turbulence of politics. It’s easy to feel personally affected by political decisions, especially when the stakes are high regarding the continued rights of specific minority groups. It’s also important to recognize which factors are beyond one’s control. Try adopting a mindset that accepts uncertainty and focuses on what one can control, such as how one reacts to political events. If a political event triggers anger or frustration, take a moment to acknowledge those feelings and decide the next step to take. This could simply be letting those feelings go, or taking a specific action. 

Surround oneself with supportive people — One’s social circle can play a huge role in emotional well-being. Surround oneself with people who uplift and support instead of those who constantly push their political opinions or engage in unproductive discussions. Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect. Nurturing friendships with people who value peace and personal boundaries can make the difference when trying to protect one’s sanity. If political discussion happens in group settings that make one uncomfortable, it’s okay to respectfully steer the conversation in a different direction or excuse oneself from the conversation altogether. 

Find balance with perspective — It’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture when lost in the political noise. In the heat of the moment, political events can feel like life-and-death, but it’s important to maintain perspective. Take time to reflect on what’s truly important in one’s life — relationships, health, personal growth and emotional well-being. Although politics influence the world around us, they don’t have to define one’s happiness. 

Engage in constructive conversations — When discussing politics with others, try to engage in constructive, respectful conversations rather than arguments. Try to avoid getting drawn into heated debates where emotions take control. One doesn’t have to agree with everyone, but it’s important to be able to be satisfied and proud of one’s actions and words. If one is ashamed at the end of the day, maybe it’s time to understand where one needs to change. If a discussion starts to get too intense, it’s okay to politely disengage. Protecting one’s peace sometimes means stepping away from situations that threaten emotional stability. 

Politics in the United States can be overwhelming, but one doesn’t have to let them take a toll on their mental and emotional health. At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that love is more powerful than hate, to stick to one’s values and to understand that some relationships are not as simple as a difference in ideas.

Lovin’ the lüften lifestyle

Lüften is a German practice of opening windows to air out a space and improve air quality in a home. This practice is deeply rooted in German tradition, which is seen as a way of life, and aligns with the values of cleanliness and health. This widely powerful tradition promotes better air quality, health and comfort. There are three techniques that one could practice. 

Stoßlüften is also known as shock or impact ventilation. In order to participate in this practice, one should open windows or balcony doors wide to let cold air in. This allows the air to quickly exchange and flush out the stale air. This is most effective in the winter, but all of the seasons have different time limits to accommodate the lower temperatures — 5 minutes in the winter, 10-15 minutes in autumn and spring and 30 minutes in the summer.

The second technique is known as Querlüften. This is also known as cross ventilation. Cross ventilation involves opening all the windows of a house to allow fresh air to flow. This technique has many goals, such as getting rid of smells and stopping rooms from getting too humid. 

The third technique is Kipplüften. This technique involves opening the windows slightly, which results in continuous ventilation at a slower pace compared to Querlüften and Stoßlüften. This is the preferred practice since it acts as an efficient way to clear out old air and reduce indoor pollutants. It is also used in warmer months. 

All these techniques improve air quality in the room, keeping the air from getting too dry and stale. There are many benefits to the practice that can positively impact one’s life. First, colder temperatures are associated with better sleep. According to Healthline, a cooler room will naturally match the body’s drop in temperature, making it easier to fall and stay asleep. The temperature should be around 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit. One way to get the most out of this practice is not overdoing it. One should find the balance of getting enough fresh air and ventilation while also making sure that the temperature supports one’s sleep. Another is to monitor temperatures and air quality. When the weather dips below freezing it can actually be detrimental to one’s health. During this time, one should instead set the thermostat to a cool temperature that promotes better rest. It’s also important to pay attention to air quality. According to airNow.gov, the value of air quality should be between 0 to 150. These levels do not affect the majority of the public, but anything over 150 is unhealthy, and many experience adverse health effects. “If the air outside isn’t safe to breathe, it’s best to leave the windows shut,” airNow.gov states.

This intentional practice aims to break the norm of modern society of staying indoors for long periods of time. Stagnant air negatively impacts a person because it leads to a build-up of allergens, bacteria and unpleasant odors which contribute to headaches, fatigue and respiratory issues. Lüften has a positive effect on one’s mood by creating a more relaxed and inviting atmosphere for others. Incorporating this practice could be the thing a home needs to feel fresh and energetic.

Healthy is proactive

Living a healthy lifestyle can be difficult, especially when navigating through seasons of annual illness. Oregon’s cold and flu season typically runs from October to May. During the 2024-2025 flu season, health officials have noticed that cases have skyrocketed. As one attempts to end winter on a healthy note, health becomes a top priority for many. One of the best ways to get through the cold and flu season is to take a preventive approach. This includes staying home when one is feeling under the weather or sick, giving extra space to other people in public, wearing a mask when needed, washing hands more frequently, eating a balanced diet, getting an adequate amount of sleep and, most effectively, getting the flu shot. Although vaccines have become a controversial topic, taking preventative measures to protect the health of oneself and others is of the utmost importance. 

To understand why the flu vaccine is important in the name of public health, one should know what influenza is and how it functions. Influenza is a virus that infects the nose, throat and lungs — meaning it mainly attacks the respiratory system. This virus travels through droplets in the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. When someone is exposed to the flu, some of the symptoms a person can experience are a sore throat, a runny nose, fever, cough, headache, fatigue and chills within a couple of days. 

One may wonder what the flu vaccine has to do with lifestyle, but there are several effects. As finals week approaches, students are preparing for projects, essays, exams and many other assignments. With this upcoming stress, the immune system becomes susceptible to illness. Getting sick isn’t an ideal situation when one has a full schedule. Outside of the classroom, some might have to call out of work and bills might pile up. Getting the flu shot will result in milder symptoms, allowing a person to return to work and get back to studying if one gets exposed to the flu. Another reason is that it can protect children and the elderly. Many people have younger siblings, cousins or even grandparents that can have complications if they get the flu and then another illness. Protecting oneself and living a healthy lifestyle includes protecting the health of our friends, family and neighbors. Some strains of the flu can be more aggressive — such as bird flu H5N1 — and overwhelm hospitals. This results in fewer beds for other patients with other life-threatening injuries and illnesses. 

There are some arguments against the annual flu shot, including the belief that the flu isn’t serious. Although people older than 5 and younger than 65 can quickly recover from the flu, not everyone is lucky to fully recover from the flu. Depending on the severity of the infection, some people who fall into the high recovery rate demographic could end up with disability or death — unfortunately, death and disability do not discriminate. According to the CDC, the 2024-2025 flu season has resulted in 24 million positive cases, 310,000 hospitalizations and 13,000 deaths, including at least 57 children. To put this in perspective, these are someone’s children, siblings, cousins, parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents, teachers, doctors, neighbors and friends. 

Sadly, the controversy of the topic has led to the direct increase in preventable illness and death. To live a healthy lifestyle, one should strive to take a proactive approach. This lifestyle reaches far beyond oneself and one should strive to live a life filled with compassion, empathy and love. Just as one would take their vitamins and get an annual checkup, this simple step can leave one healthy, happy and protected.

Deep dive into the American Sign Language at Western

American Sign Language has a rich and profound history across the country — but is a rare program to encounter in higher education. Few colleges along the West Coast offer American Sign Language courses beyond the beginning levels — Western, however, offers two degree paths, a minor and a master’s program.

The American Sign Language studies program at Western, on average, carries 15 students per class through 60 required credits of classes, beginning with the basic models of ASL and leading into a variety of additional classes, such as Deaf history, mental health in the Deaf community and deafblind studies.

For roughly half a century, Western has been serving the Deaf community in Monmouth, Oregon. Some current staff of Western in the ASL department, with examples such as Brent Redpath, LeShonDre Brown and Elisa Maroney, attended Western in prior years. 

Historically, Western showcases success in instructing the future interpreters of America. Western was the first base for a national ASL assessment service in the West as of 2020 — a testament to Western’s dedication to American Sign Language proficiency testing for anyone interested in their fluency level.

The two Bachelor of Arts programs — American Sign Language studies and interpreting studies: theory — differ, despite common misconceptions about the programs. American Sign Language studies, according to Western’s website, helps foster knowledge of ASL in a way that promotes respect for Deaf culture, history and community. “You will not only continue to hone your ASL skills, but you will also study areas such as linguistics, language acquisition, cultural competency and mental health and learn how this information can serve the (Deaf) population.”

Other higher education institutions may refer to their version of ASL studies as Deaf studies or, potentially, be known as simply American Sign Language.

Elisa Maroney, current program co-coordinator of the ASL branch of the interpreting program and certified interpreter, helped construct the ASL studies program curriculum at Western in its prime, alongside Debi Duren. The program originated from the interpreting program, which found its footing first at Western.

“Our program is a study of the language, the culture, the history. For ASL studies, we’re often a more foundational program — students have that skill in ASL that they can use for the next step in their lives, which might be a graduate program, or it could be related to their career that requires an ASL background,” said Brent Redpath, American Sign Language studies program coordinator. Redpath has been working diligently at Western since 2012 and has become a well-respected professor — often harboring full classes with a waitlist each term.

Redpath, as program coordinator, schedules classes, makesing sure each class is properly staffed with instructors, balancesing course loads for faculty, addressesing student concerns and assistsing in conflict management amongst students. Redpath wholeheartedly represents the ASL program — his face and name are well-known in the Richard Woodcock Education Center — RWEC — where the majority of ASL classes take place.

Predominantly, classes in ASL are taught by deaf professors. ASL language classes — 101 through 303 — follow this model earnestly.

“It’s very nice to have native users of a language who are instructing in their native language,” said Redpath. “And to receive language and culture directly from a deaf person. Nothing against hearing people, don’t get me wrong — but their experiences will be different than a person who grew up as a Deaf individual. They’re going to have a different background, and they won’t be able to speak to that perspective in the same way a Deaf person can.”

With this in mind, ASL classes are regarded as “Deaf classrooms.”

“You might notice as you come into class that we have our tables set up in a U-shape, which is different from other classes. That’s how we always teach so that every student in the class can see each other. It’s a visual language,” said Redpath. “It’s important that we can all see each other, that I can see the students and they can see me.”

The RWEC boasts glass panels in the wall, allowing professors to see what’s happening in the hallways and beyond — a common Deaf-friendly window style. Redpath personally acted in the committee that assisted with designing the RWEC. “I was able to offer some tips and ideas for how to make this building a more Deaf-friendly space,” said Redpath. Additionally, the topic of what makes a Deaf-friendly space is discussed in class to teach on Deaf culture and respect.

Deaf classrooms are also deadly quiet to the average hearing person.

“It is dead silent … The way you can just hear a pin drop — the way people can hear you swallow wrong,” laughed junior Abby Money. “And then the two people on your left hear it and you have to say, ‘sorry, I’m hungry today.’”

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the ASL studies program; staff has been reduced, as have extra class options. As of 2025, Western has two full-time ASL studies staff members, alongside five part-time employees. Ideally, the program will be able to restore more staff members, in-person classes and more classes and class times.

Functionally, ASL classes utilize Canvas and GoReact for exams, homework and lessons. GoReact is a video-based system, allowing students to upload videos of their exams and receive direct feedback. 

ASL students, if struggling, may resort to the tutoring center for additional assistance with their signing fluency. Ideally, students will continue to participate in the Deaf community. “I always encourage students to be involved,” said Redpath. “It’s not enough to just go to ASL classes and be done. You can’t thrive that way … There is actually an ASL hall in the dorms, where you can have extra opportunities to socialize outside of class time.”

The ASL club on campus is a good resource for students to gain signing experience and practice with their peers.

Redpath’s classes involve three exams per term and weekly assignments. Students meet in small groups to practice for a grade on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, depending on the instructor’s choice.

“The ASL studies program is one of the biggest language programs that we offer on campus, and administration at Western has recognized us for that. We appreciate their support for our program,” said Redpath. “We felt their involvement in making our program successful … We hope (the program) will continue to grow even larger in the future. Of course, things are different now in post-COVID days, but we really hope to be back to what we were before. It’s a really important program — to me and to the university.”

As for Redpath — “My favorite part of this job is definitely working with the students. I teach a variety of classes, I work with diverse students from diverse backgrounds. And they’re not just learning from me — I’m learning from them.”

For junior Dylan Meader, Redpath stands out as a professor. “His teaching style is really effective for me,” explained Meader. “I’ve had good experiences with all the professors here, but I feel I respond best to his methods of teaching — he’s just a really nice guy.”

Meader gravitated to American Sign Language in high school, needing to fulfill a language requirement and finding it fulfilling beyond his initial expectations. 

“There’s not a single school in Washington that has the interpreting program, and that was something I really wanted to pursue,” said Meader. “I decided to look out of state, and the closest to my home in Bellingham, Washington, was Western. So I applied and I toured. It was something that I liked — so I decided to go for it … it’s been really great so far.”

Maroney attests that somewhere between one-third to one-half of ASL interpreting students in any given year are from out of state — such as juniors Abby Money and Meader.

Money, like Meader, hails from another state. Money grew up in Templeton, California, and Monmouth has been her first taste of life somewhere else.

“It was really scary for me moving here because I had, genuinely, never lived anywhere else on my own,” said Money. “Being fully immersed in the classes, I was so scared starting college. It was a nice surprise — it was worth it.”

Often, Redpath or LeShonDre Brown are the first faces students see when entering the program at 101.

“I went in, freaking out,” said Money, describing her first term with Redpath in ASL 201. “I was so scared. I was like, ‘he’s deaf. What if he doesn’t understand a word I’m saying?’ Spoiler alert — he did. He understood me.”

Western’s interpreting program hopes to help fulfill the country’s growing need for ASL interpreters. At Western, the program is available entirely online to support that goal, so more students from other states can pursue interpreting.

Interpreting, as a class subject, requires focus and drive. Students learn that professional interpreting requires no distracting clothing or accessories, and that hair must be out of the face. Recorded videos must be in good quality and against a blank backdrop.

Videos and exams follow any number of subjects. Often, they rely on translating English into ASL and then signing that statement.

Maroney has been working at Western since 1993 but previously received a certificate in interpreting from the college in prior years. Maroney even found herself at Gallaudet for her master’s — an iconic, and vastly important, college, leading the charge in Deaf education.

Eventually, Western’s undergraduate program will re-incorporate a crucial internship — “Our hope was that by having a graduate program, we could sort of guide students and provide them with supervision opportunities to, then, be more ready to work. The problem is that not everyone chooses to go on to (get their master’s) and they aren’t ready to work if they don’t have that internship piece,” said Maroney. “It is a lifelong learning process. You can’t get your bachelor’s degree and be one-and-done. You have to keep working on your language, on your interpreting, on your cultural experiences and knowledge.”

Chances are the ASL program, in any branch, will continue to evolve. “Everything is in flux,” said Maroney. “We try things, and if it doesn’t work, we try something else. I think it’s an exciting time right now — a little bit unnerving at the moment — but we have searches going on. We’re looking for two ASL studies faculty and one interpreting studies faculty.”

Additionally, Maroney recommends students look into scholarships. The interpreting program is, typically, six years long — meaning the cost can be heavy alongside already taxing work.

As for student-to-student advice, Meader has his own: “(Don’t be) intimidated, especially if you’re brand new to learning ASL and interacting with the Deaf community. Trust yourself. And have fun, it’s a lot of fun.”

“It gets easier,” said Money. “Your receptive skills get better. And when someone’s signing to you and you catch on, you’re like, ‘oh, wait, I’m actually getting this now.’ It’s not something that you’re panicking over, cause I remember panicking.”

Some staff in the program teach truly because they just enjoy the program, often working other jobs — Alethea Boyer-Mularski teaches full-time at Oregon School for the Deaf, showing up for her 5 p.m. 300-level ASL instruction classes after a full day of work.

“I teach at WOU because it’s where my teaching journey began nearly 18 years ago. Deb Duren, who was then the ASL Studies Program Coordinator, hired me despite my lack of teaching experience at the time, recognizing potential in me. Over time, my love for teaching grew, and I developed a desire to share my knowledge of ASL, Deaf culture and the Deaf community,” said Boyer-Mularski. “During the day, I work at Oregon School for the Deaf, and in the evenings, I teach hearing students at WOU. It’s a rewarding contrast — teaching Deaf students their true language while introducing ASL to hearing students.”

Western’s launch of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Program — 2015-2021 — had Boyer-Mularski in one of the first cohorts. After a six-year hiatus starting in 2017, Boyer-Mularski has since returned to the college.

“It was amazing. I love Alethea. She definitely helped my receptive skills a lot (because) she’s a much quicker signer. That was a lot of fun, being thrown into that,” said Money.

Additionally, Money regards the language with a lot of love. “It’s important to me because it kind of reminds me of where I come from a little bit. I took it originally for my friend, for her and her brother, because she was going to teach it to him. And then I just fell in love with it — it’s a beautiful language.”

“ASL is more than just a language — it’s the heart of Deaf identity and culture. I encourage students (and) faculty to appreciate its true beauty and respect its vital role in the Deaf community,” said Boyer-Mularski.

Meader has appreciated Western’s program so much that he’s opting to pursue his master’s at Western in interpreting. “The staff and the professors in the ASL and interpreting programs have been so supportive and encouraging … and I think that’s what’s made me want to continue, as opposed to (an) experience I had in high school where I almost quit learning ASL because my first teacher said something very harsh and awful to me about my signing, but I’ve just had really good experiences with the professors here,” he said. “Regarding the interpreting program, I think the professors do a really great job at preparing you and setting you up for success. It feels like they really care about you and think about you as more than just a student. Like they really want to set you up for future success as an interpreter or whatever you decide to do with ASL.”

As Winter term gets closer to finals week, studying for classes can be time-consuming and overwhelming. Finding the right study habits can be crucial for saving time, sanity and help one to thrive. 

Create a consistent study schedule One of the most important habits to develop is using a structured schedule instead of doing a study dump, where a student crams all of their studying time all at once. This ensures that there is enough time to study for each class. Another positive for a study schedule is that it helps to avoid procrastination because it’s already set in stone. Planning ahead allows one to digest the material, resulting in decreased stress. Without a study schedule, assignments can easily slip through the cracks, or one may be forced to cram the night before an exam. Here’s how to do it: 

  1. Begin by blocking out one’s class schedule and personal commitments in planners and calendars.
  2. Identify gaps in one’s daily schedule and plan out shorter study sessions.
    1. Shorter study sessions should be between 45-60 minutes with at least 5-minute breaks in order to maintain focus.
  3. Use tools like planners, calendars or apps to track assignments and exams.
  4. Be sure to schedule some downtime to relax and recharge.

Stay Organized — This is the cornerstone of academic success. Having a system for managing notes, assignments and other deadlines helps to understand the material. This works to reduce mental clutter which leads to better concentration and less stress. When one can find what one needs quickly, it leads to studying more efficiently and avoiding wasting time. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Keep notes organized by subject, topic or date. Use binders or digital tools like OneNote, Notion or Evernote for easy access.
  2. Color-code or highlight key information to make it easier to identify when reviewing.
  3. Use to-do lists to keep track of assignments, with realistic deadlines and reminders.
  4. Regularly clean up one’s study space to keep distractions at bay. A tidy space leads to a clear mind.

Minimize Distractions — Distractions are everywhere — social media, messages and constant notifications can easily pull you away from studying. While multitasking may seem like an efficient strategy, it often leads to decreased productivity. According to Brown Health University, “In reality, our brains are not set up to multitask. We are designed to be ‘mono-taskers,’ that is, to focus on and complete ‘one task at a time.’” This becomes even clearer when one tries studying with each method. There’s a clear difference when it comes to brain fatigue at the end of a study session. Minimizing distractions allows one to complete tasks faster and retain more information. Concentration on material leads to an improvement in one’s overall academic performance. Here’s how to practice this:

  1. Turn one’s phone to focus or do not disturb mode to limit distractions during study time. 
  2. Find a quiet place, such as a library, to study.
  3. Set specific, intentional times to check one’s phone or respond to messages, preferably during breaks. 
  4. Try using the “Pomodoro Technique”: Study for 25-30 minutes and then take a short break. After a few cycles, take a longer break.

Take care of mental and physical health — It’s easy to neglect the other parts of health when one is drowning in assignments, exams and other deadlines. However, the mind and body are the foundation of academic success. Good physical and mental health will improve focus, memory and overall performance. Its importance continues to boost mood, reduce stress and increase motivation. This can be done by: 

  1. Exercising regularly: Jogging, yoga or even a brisk walk can boost brain function.
  2. Getting enough sleep: seven to nine hours per night helps consolidate learning and enhances memory retention.
  3. Eating a balanced diet: A nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can boost energy and focus.
  4. Practicing mindfulness: Meditation, deep breathing exercises and journaling can reduce stress and improve mental clarity.
  5. Seeking help when needed: If struggling emotionally or mentally, don’t hesitate to reach out to a counselor or therapist through the Student Health and Counseling Center. 

Collaborate with Classmates — Studying with classmates is a highly effective way to learn outside of the classroom. Group study sessions allow one to share ideas, clarify questions and help to approach problems from different perspectives. Also, explaining concepts to others helps to reinforce one’s understanding. This could be done through:

  1. Joining or forming study groups to review key topics before exams.
  2. Using online forums or platforms like Discord or Slack to collaborate remotely.
  3. Share notes, quiz each other or review difficult concepts together.
  4. Participate in group discussions or attend office hours held by professors.

Review Regularly — Instead of cramming the night before an exam, regular review is much more effective. Weekly review ensures that material stays fresh and contributes to information retention over the long term. The brain remembers information better when it’s revisited over time, rather than when it’s crammed into a single session. In order to do this, one should be sure to: 

  1. Schedule weekly review sessions for each subject to revisit lecture notes, assignments and key concepts.
  2. Use active recall techniques, such as using flashcards, filling out practice problems and completing practice tests.

Studying doesn’t have to be a never-ending race against deadlines. By developing effective study habits, staying organized, and focusing on physical and mental health, one can create a productive and balanced academic experience. The key to success is consistency, active engagement with materials, and a proactive approach to managing stress and distractions.

Finding self in solitude

In a world where we are constantly surrounded by people, notifications and obligations, we are often conditioned to believe that our worth is tied to how busy or connected we are. However, spending time with oneself is essential for our mental, emotional and physical well-being. The positive results of solitude go beyond “being alone.” Taking time to step away from the noise of everyday life opens the door to self-reflection, personal growth and a deeper connection to one’s own needs and desires.

Cultivates Self-Awareness and Reflection — One of the biggest benefits of spending time alone is the opportunity for self-reflection. Constantly surrounding ourselves with other people can make it difficult to hear our own thoughts. Solitude provides space for introspection. This allows one to process their thoughts, evaluate actions and think about goals in a more focused manner. One should ask themselves, “What do I really want in life? What makes me happy?” Getting in touch with one’s true self helps to make decisions that are more aligned with their values and long-term aspirations. One should try setting aside some quiet time to meditate and reflect. 

Boosts Creativity and Innovation — Solitude is an excellent catalyst for creativity. Anyone who is an artist, a writer, a musician or an enjoyer of problem-solving can tap into new ideas or discover breakthroughs outside of a busy environment. The mind tends to flourish in environments free of distractions. One is more likely to access their inner creativity without the pressures of external judgment of others. Historically, many of history’s greatest creators and thinkers have credited spending time alone as the key to their creative genius. One could do this by creating a space that promotes creative thinking, taking breaks from digital distractions and using alone time to brainstorm or write. 

Reduces Stress and Increases Mindfulness – In a life full of obligations it can be easy for one to feel overwhelmed by the demands of work, school, relationships and other responsibilities. Time alone helps with reducing stress and promotes relaxation in order for one to recharge and reset the mind. Mindfulness practices can help to center the mind. This can be done in many ways including finding a calming activity that can be done alone, limiting phone time and taking breaks throughout the day to be alone with our thoughts. 

Enhances Emotional Clarity and Healing – Our emotions are often complex and it can be hard to fully process them throughout our busy day. Time allows one to step back, reflect and understand our feelings clearly. Stress, sadness, anger and confusion need solitude for emotional healing. Sometimes our emotions need validation and to be free from judgment of others. Freedom from other people enables one to work through difficult feelings and gain emotional clarity. It also provides the opportunity to build emotional resilience. Here are some tips on how solitude can enhance emotional clarity and healing.

  1. Allow oneself to experience emotions without distractions or the need to “fix” them immediately. This can involve sitting with our feelings and giving permission to feel.
  2. Practicing self-compassion by being kind to oneself when dealing with difficult emotions.
  3. Using alone time to reflect on past experiences and gain insights into how to grow from them.

Strengthens the Relationship with Oneself – Spending quality time alone is a form of self-care that helps to build a deeper and more loving relationship with oneself. Instead of only relying on others for validation and happiness, it can be empowering to recognize that one can, at times, fulfill their own emotional and social needs. The relationship that one has for themselves sets the tone for all other relationships in life. Self-awareness helps to build a more positive self-image and become more confident in one’s decisions. Self-love and inner peace depend on learning to enjoy one’s own company. This can be done in several ways including, going on “dates” with oneself, celebrating small victories and reflection on things one loves about themself and to make time to nurture those qualities. 

Improves Focus and Productivity – Focused time can help to accomplish tasks more efficiently and effectively. Whether it’s studying, working on a personal project or tackling household chores, solitude can enhance productivity by allowing one to focus deeply on the task at hand. Focused time leads to better results where one can fully immerse themselves in the task and complete it with a greater attention to detail.

Fosters Independence and Confidence – Solitude fosters a sense of independence. It teaches one to rely on themself for emotional support and decision-making. Once one is comfortable enough in their own company, they become less dependent on external validation and more confident in the ability to navigate life’s challenges. One should trust their own instincts and embrace solitude as an opportunity to strengthen resilience and self-reliance. 

Spending time alone is not a luxury — it is a vital part of maintaining mental, emotional and physical well-being. Whether solitude is used for self-reflection, creativity, emotional healing or simply to recharge, the benefits are undeniable. In a world that often celebrates constant connection, taking time for oneself is an act of self-respect and care. By embracing solitude, one can deepen the relationship with oneself, enhancing focus, reducing stress and ultimately leading a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Outdoor season begins

With the transition from indoor season to outdoor season, Western’s multi-event athletes Macy Clemens and Alexa McGowan are preparing to take on new challenges. 

A native of Albany, Oregon, first-year Alexa McGowan has been steadily adjusting to collegiate competition. Her track and field journey began in middle school as a way to stay in shape for soccer, but she soon discovered a profound passion for the sport. Initially a sprinter, she later expanded her skill set, competing at the state level before discovering her love for multi-events. During the indoor season, McGowan competed in her first collegiate multi-event meet.
While she is still refining her technique in hurdles, McGowan has embraced the challenge, knowing that she is only starting out and will improve with more experience. However, pole vault is McGowan’s strong suit and remains her favorite event, despite it not being part of the heptathlon. “Ever since I started my junior year of high school, the more I do it, the more I have fun.” 

As she transitions into the outdoor season, her focus is on gaining experience in the full heptathlon. While she doesn’t see herself competing beyond college, she is determined to make the most of her time as a student-athlete. Her advice to younger athletes is, “Put in the effort. Once I committed to training, I saw real progress. Trust your gut and have fun.”
Senior Macy Clemens, from Klamath Falls, Oregon, is embracing her last season with Western’s track team. Like McGowan, she initially took up track in high school to stay in shape for other sports but soon became drawn to the competition track had to offer. Originally a hurdler and jumper, she transitioned into multi-events in college at the encouragement of her coach. For Clemens, the transition to outdoor track means preparing for the full heptathlon — a seven-event competition that tests every aspect of the sport. Out of all the events, the 800-meter run poses the biggest challenge for Clemens. “Whenever I run the 800, I have to switch up my entire mindset. It’s a really tough event, and even though I dread it at times, I know I have to run it regardless. I just get myself hyped up to do it and try my hardest.” 

One of Clemens’ proudest achievements this year was her performance at the Reno Invitational, where she recorded personal bests despite coming off an injury. This moment validated her dedication and effort she invested throughout the offseason.. 

Balancing track and academics has also been a priority for Clemens. While succeeding on the track, she has also gained experience in digital marketing, a field she hopes to pursue after graduation. With a degree in business marketing and a current focus on organizational leadership in graduate school, she is preparing for life beyond athletics. 

As the outdoor season gets underway, Western fans can expect to see these two athletes continue to push their limits. While first-year McGowan aims to gain experience and build a strong foundation, fourth-year Clemens looks to end her collegiate career on a high note. With their sights set on personal bests and strong performances, Alexa McGowan and Macy Clemens are ready to take on the upcoming outdoor season with style.

How do you honestly feel about being a student at Western? What would you change if you could? How has Western fallen short of your expectations? This is your chance to share what you honestly think about your experience at Western. The WOLF Student Experience Feedback form is Western’s first annual opportunity for students to give their anonymous feedback on all areas of student life. Academics, co-curriculars, on-campus dining, housing, employment, personal growth, sense of belonging and purpose — all of these topics and more are included. There is even an open comment section for you to talk about whatever specific issue you feel strongly about at the end of the form. The institution is eager to hear what is improving your experience, worth continued investment and what negatively impacts your overall satisfaction as a “Wolf.” 

The goal of the form is not only to give student voices a new platform to be heard, but to use this feedback to help make actionable change on campus. The responses collected will help guide revisions of programs, new services and student opportunities that you are asking for. There is often a large gap between the perceived needs of students and the actual needs of students — this is our chance to lessen that gap. While there may be efforts from your academic department to collect feedback and make improvements, this form is for the institution as a whole and aims to help guide high level decision making for various areas of the student experience, not just in academics. 

In addition to being part of the change you want to see, you’ll also be able to enter into a drawing for one of eight prizes, including two $100 Wolfstore gift cards. Depending on your campus involvement, you may be able to enter the drawing more than once. Once you make it to the end of the form, you’ll be led to a new page to collect your contact information and enter the drawing; this entry will not be linked to your form responses. Dorm decorating

Making one’s own space is extremely important in college. This chapter in life is full of excitement, new friends and new experiences. Although it’s easy to settle for bare walls, only sticking with the provided furniture, decorating one’s room has a significant impact on their mental well-being, self-expression and overall college experience. Here are a few reasons why decorating is important. 

The dorm room is one of the few places where students can fully express themselves. Personal touches like family and friend photos, favorite posters or other mementos to remind one of where one comes from can help anyone feeling homesick. At the end of a busy day, a student’s dorm room becomes a sanctuary for relaxation and recharging their social battery. Soft bedding, throw pillows and lighting work to create that relaxing environment. For students looking to choose a style, here is a list of popular themes: minimalism, boho chic, 70s style and much more. Personal expression and decoration don’t have to fit into a single label.

When making new friends, one will end up hanging out in their rooms. A decorated room can be a great conversation starter, or for when new roommates move in. Having a well-decorated space can feel more welcoming to guests. 

Stress is a normal part of the college experience, but that doesn’t mean it should follow one into their room. Creating a personal and colorful space is a powerful influence to one’s mental health. According to Mental Health America, “Happy, bright colors can increase your mental activity and leave you feeling rejuvenated and energized.” An aesthetically pleasing environment improves one’s mental health and can even make one feel more productive. 

Even though a dorm room is small, there is plenty of space to make it one’s own. It’s a fun and creative way to express oneself. So, grab those fairy lights, fluffy blankets and meaningful decor — the room is waiting.

Bring in the greenery 

Plants have several benefits that directly affect its owners. Plants are therapeutic, improving one’s mental health, helping one to recover from illness faster and contributing to a good flow within a feng shui lifestyle. Some popular bedroom plants are lucky bamboo, succulents, snake plants and Pothos. 

Thrift shop

Thrift shopping has great options to find affordable decoration items that fit one’s style. Lamps, vases, frames and baskets are among the most unique decor that won’t break the bank.

Think multifunctional

Furniture that serves more than one purpose is extremely helpful for any student. One should look for under-bed storage with drawers and ottomans. 

Understand what’s allowed in the dorm

As one gets creative with decorating, it’s important to understand what is allowed — and, more importantly, not allowed — within the dorms. Candles, halogen lamps, vacuums and toaster ovens are among the most popular items that are prohibited in the dorms. Any student needing a refresher should look at the “FIRE and LIFE SAFETY” and “The Guide to Residential Living 24-25” on Western’s housing page. Some safe alternatives for the most popular prohibited item — candles — are diffuser sticks, essential oil diffusers and Scentsy warmers. 

Use peel-and-stick items

Students have likely heard this a million times already, but Command strips are our best friends when one wants to hang up any art and hooks without causing damage to walls.

National championship

In a thrilling finale to the 2024 college football season, the Ohio State Buckeyes secured their ninth national championship title by defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23 Jan. 20. This crucial game, played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, marked Ohio State’s first national championship since 2014. What was particularly significant about the contest is that it occurred in the inaugural year of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff format.
Entering the playoffs as the No. 8 seed with a 13-2 record, Ohio State faced notable opponents, including a clutch 28-14 victory over Texas in the Playoff Semifinal at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The Buckeyes’ path to the title was different than most, being the first national champions to have lost two regular-season games, highlighting their ability to triumph over obstacles.
In the championship game, Ohio State controlled the early possessions, scoring touchdowns on each of their first four tries while also adding a field goal on their fifth. Led by quarterback Will Howard and running back Quinshon Judkins, the Buckeyes jumped to a 31-7 lead by the middle of the third quarter. Judkins, a transfer from Mississippi, racked up 100 yards on just 11 carries, scoring three touchdowns, including an insane 70-yard run.
However, Notre Dame refused to back down. Two quick touchdowns and two successful two-point conversions brought the Fighting Irish within eight points late in the fourth quarter. As tension filled the stadium, legendary former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz was shown on the big screen, giving his team a thumbs-up and sending energy through the crowd. But, ultimately, Notre Dame’s revival fell short when Jeremiah Smith’s highlight catch allowed Ohio State to retake control and crush their opponent’s momentum.
Will Howard, a Kansas State transfer, was a gem for the Buckeyes throughout the playoffs and shined in the championship game. He completed 13 straight passes at the start of the contest, finishing the night with 231 passing yards and two touchdowns. While his final stats were impressive, it was his calm demeanor and ability to deliver under pressure that will be remembered. Jeremiah Smith, the team’s standout receiver, also came through when it mattered most, turning a relatively quiet night into one for the ages with a pivotal catch.
The addition of Quinshon Judkins via the transfer portal also highlighted Ohio State’s strategic roster building. His physical play style, combined with his playmaking ability, gave the Buckeyes a big advantage that opposing defenses struggled to contain throughout the playoffs.
Although they had multiple clutch plays, Ohio State’s dominance extended far beyond that. The Buckeyes were able to outgain Notre Dame 445 yards to 308 and punted just once all evening. Howard’s efficiency and the offensive line’s control over the game were critical factors in the Buckeyes’ success.
Postgame, Notre Dame’s head coach Marcus Freeman faced some tough questions, including one about the decision to attempt a fake punt that failed and a missed field goal attempt off the left upright. There were great plays made on both ends of the field, and though the Irish gave a valiant effort, especially in the fourth quarter, they simply just couldn’t match Ohio State’s execution.
Although they came up short in the National Championship, Notre Dame has plenty to be proud of. Finishing the season with an impressive 14-2 record, the Fighting Irish defeated multiple top-tier teams on their journey to the title game. Reaching this stage is a dream for most players, and for Notre Dame, it’s a testament to their grit and determination. With their eyes set on the future, the Fighting Irish can take pride in this remarkable season while also aiming to change the outcome the next time they have the opportunity to do so.

Building healthy food habits

Healthy food habits are essential for a student’s success both in and out of the classroom. For many people, college is their first time away from home. Constant new experiences, late-night study sessions and other exciting events can lead to many overlooking the importance of building healthy food habits. With that, we need to nurture a healthy relationship surrounding food as early as possible. No matter what a person’s weekly schedule looks like, they can always make time for food. 

For many students, a busy schedule seems to take over daily life at the start of every term. Whether it’s classes, sports or music practice, extracurricular activities, work, internships or something else, meals often get shifted to fit our busy days, but sometimes when it feels like food can’t be fit in, mealtime tends to be skipped — a dangerous habit to develop. It can be tempting to skip meals, especially when one is running out the door, but it leads to low energy levels throughout the day. It also affects one’s ability to concentrate. This results in overeating later in the day, causing one’s blood sugar to crash afterward. Breakfast is, unfortunately, the most skipped meal of the day. Skipping meals can easily be combated by trying fast, easy and nutritious meals. This could be Greek yogurt and granola, oatmeal with fruit or even a frozen breakfast sandwich popped in the microwave. Breakfast helps with feeling more energized throughout the day and keeps one feeling full.

Since we’re constantly on the go, time restraints can lead people to rely on drinks to keep energy up. Soda, energy drinks and sweetened coffee beverages are loaded with empty calories that cause massive spikes in blood sugar and leave one feeling empty. Any person with a busy schedule understands the reliance on caffeine. Too much caffeine leads to jitteriness, poor sleep and huge energy crashes, which are all detrimental to a progressing student. 

Sugary drinks can contribute to weight gain, poor dental health and feeling sluggish. This doesn’t mean that one cannot ever have a sugary drink, but they should be an occasional treat. 

All should include more water in their diet. It’s crucial for maintaining energy and focus. In general, it’s great for overall well-being. For some — myself included at times — drinking water is boring and seems like a hassle. Try infusing the water with fruits like lemons or even cucumbers for a refreshing twist. 

Stress from exams and the general hustle and bustle of health can build up and become overwhelming. Some can experience emotional eating. This happens when the desire to eat is influenced by our emotions instead of pure hunger. Many seek out comfort foods like ice cream, chips or sweets. In the moment a person can feel good, but feelings of guilt may arise in the aftermath. Emotional eating tends to happen late at night. This can be common during study sessions. Generally, eating before going to bed disrupts sleeping patterns. The best way to fix emotional eating and late-night snacking is through therapy since the root of the stress comes from other areas in one’s life. 

When walking into the campus dining hall, one can see that most gravitate towards pastas, pizzas and fried food, but some forget to include enough vegetables. The salad bar is a customizable way for students to enjoy vegetables in a way that suits their preferences. Each vegetable is full of essential vitamins, minerals and fiber that support digestion and immunity. 

Technology has revolutionized the way food can be ordered. All it takes is a few taps on a phone and food is delivered right to the door. This isn’t the healthiest option to be pursued and isn’t a budget-friendly option for many college students. Many delivery food options are high in sodium, unhealthy fats and empty calories. Relying too heavily on these processed foods can lead to weight gain, poor digestion and energy crashes. Once this has become a regular habit, it can interfere with one’s ability to learn how to cook healthier meals. 

We see new fads and diets that claim to be “new and improved” methods of promoting physical health, but without the proper knowledge of what a person’s body is deficient in, many diets can be extremely harmful. This can be especially true when a person is constantly jumping from one diet to the next when they don’t immediately see results. Diets like keto, juice cleanses, the master cleanse — also called the lemon detox diet — and the “no carb” diet are examples of “fad diets” that often cause more harm than good. While these are just a few, the list goes on. It is essential to focus on a balanced, nutrient-dense diet instead of following fleeting trends. 

As students become more independent, it can be chaotic trying to adjust to a new chapter in life. Eating habits are typically the first to fall through the cracks and tend to go unnoticed until the effects are visible. There are changes that can be made in order to shift a poor or unhealthy relationship with food. 

The first is to prepare. Food prep is an easy way to plan out our meals and snacks. It’s possible to create single portions and teach ourselves how to cook. All it takes is a couple of hours and, in the end, it is one less thing we have to worry about during our busy week. 

The second is to listen to our bodies. Our bodies naturally give cues to signal when we are hungry. When we are eating, we should take the time to savor the flavors and not push ourselves to clear off our plates. 

When it comes to food, moderation is key. Instead of stressing over every meal, we should focus on making general healthy choices that will leave us feeling nourished and energized. 

BUDGET-FRIENDLY HEALTHY MEAL

Start to finish: 10 minutes

Ingredients

1 cups Rolled oats

1 cup Peanut butter or almond butter

1 Banana

¼ cup Honey or maple syrup (optional)

⅓ cup Milk (or water)

Instructions

Cook the oats according to the package instructions, using either milk or water.

Once the oats are cooked, stir in a spoonful of peanut butter for healthy fats and creaminess.

Slice the banana on top of the oatmeal.

Drizzle with honey or maple syrup for added sweetness (optional).

Western vs Fraser

Western’s men’s basketball team secured their first conference victory Jan. 16, snapping their losing-streak. The Wolves, who faced a challenging start to the season, put up a strong performance in their win against Simon Fraser University. 

California native Jahville Collins, a fifth-year for the “Wolves,” dominated throughout the whole game, scoring a career high of 34 points on an efficient 57% from the field. Even with Collins’ performance, the Red Leafs led by as many as 7 points in the first half. Despite the slight point differential, Simon Fraser wasn’t able to pull away, allowing time for Western to get together and overcome their deficit. The “Wolves” were able to do exactly that, fighting back and narrowing the score, and by halftime, the “Wolves” held a 37-36 lead. Coming into the second half, the Red Leafs went on a tear. Simon Fraser, which is 1-6 in conference play, gave themselves a comfortable 9 point lead with about 10 minutes of play left. The “Wolves” were in need of a leader, but they responded with a 16-2 run. Collins continued to score the basketball, but Simon Fraser refused to give up. Luke Howard, a forward for the Red Leafs, was a force in the paint, scoring an impressive 25 points during the game. Howard was getting to his spots the whole second half, and Western didn’t seem to have an answer for him. Luckily, “Wolves first-year Mario Williams stepped up when his team needed him the most, scoring three after three to keep them in the contest. As both teams continued to battle, it was evident that the game was going to be decided at the last second. With only 5 seconds remaining in the match, the score was 77-76 in Western’s favor. With the game on the line, Fraser was forced to foul Western guard Jason Gallant, who went on to shoot free throws. Gallant, who is Western’s leading scorer and a 78% free throw shooter on the season, sank the first free throw, putting his team up 78-76. As he shot his second free throw, it hit the front iron and missed, giving the Red Leafs possession with 5.8 seconds remaining. Both teams scrambled to get to their spots as the time wound down, as Simon Fraser had no timeouts to call. The Red Leafs rushed towards their basket, but there simply wasn’t enough time to get off a quality shot, forcing them to throw up a halfcourt heave, missing the rim completely, leaving the score 78-76 with 0 seconds on the clock. Western proudly took home this conference win, and they look forward to taking even more as the season progresses.

UCLA struggles

Mick Cronin, the head coach of the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team, has recently found himself in an unwelcome spotlight. Despite a strong 10-2 non-conference record, the Bruins have crumbled in Big Ten play, posting a disappointing 3-4 record so far. This slump has visibly weighed on Cronin, who has not held back in publicly expressing his frustration with his team’s performance.
Following a 94-75 loss to Michigan, Cronin’s emotions boiled over during a tense post-game press conference. “We’re soft … we’re too soft to play hard enough,” he stated bluntly, before going a step further by calling out individual players by name. Forward Tyler Bilodeau, along with guards Dylan Andrews, Sebastian Mack and Kobe Johnson, were all singled out in his remarks. Cronin didn’t stop there, however, as he shifted his criticism toward his coaching staff as well.
“I come in, and I have more passion, energy and pride than anybody in there,” Cronin declared. “Right now, I’m frustrated with my players and my staff. The toughest guy in the room can’t be me every day. I’m upset with everybody in that locker room — my assistant coaches and my players.”
He even went on to highlight his own career accomplishments, adding, “I don’t need to do anything else. I’ve got almost 500 wins, and I’m only 53 … it’s a joke.”
These remarks quickly sparked national attention across the sports world, drawing criticism and sparking a debate about Cronin’s leadership approach. Basketball analyst Jay Bilas voiced his opinion during a live broadcast, stating, “Coaches like to talk about accountability a lot, but I don’t think that’s what accountability really looks like. That, to me, looks simply like blame. I heard a lot of ‘I’ — ‘I’m doing this, I’m doing that — and nobody else is doing it.’”
Cronin’s unusual meltdown has obviously ignited controversy, as it’s rare for a head coach to publicly shift the blame away from themselves while their team is clearly struggling. Since the polarizing press conference, the Bruins have continued to fall, losing two of their last three conference games, putting their season further in jeopardy.

As the Bruins fight to turn their season around, all eyes will remain on Cronin to see whether his unfiltered approach can spark a much-needed comeback, or if it will continue to disrupt the dynamics within his team.

TRIO

The new Student Success Center, upon entry, showcases a large, well-lit lobby, with new floors to boot and even a fireplace accompanied by comfortable seating. Looking ahead, a soft purple doorway boasts a front desk with a friendly face. Around the corner, the room opens up into an illuminated lobby for TRIO — a program that only grows the longer it exists at Western.

TRIO, sometimes referred to as SEP — Student Enrichment Program — is a nationwide program. According to oregontrio.com, the Oregon TRIO Association, otherwise known as OTA, was founded in the year 2000. Three primary initiatives would sprout: an annual professional development conference for TRIO professionals, an annual student leadership conference and a framework for Oregon to send advocates per year to Washington D.C. to pledge for funding for TRIO and spread its programs across the country.

In July of 2021, OTA received a $1 million grant from the state of Oregon to support marginalized students receiving higher education, also assisting with a full-time executive director position within OTA. Their mission: “Growing and supporting Oregon TRIO programs, staff and students … ​TRIO programs assist students with career exploration, college admissions, college preparation, financial aid, scholarships and college retention and graduation.”

Historically, the term TRIO was coined to honor the three main programs: Upward Bound, Talent Search Program and Student Support Services. “By 1998, the TRIO programs had become a vital pipeline to opportunity, serving traditional students, displaced workers and veterans,” said the TRIO history place. Eventually, the three programs would triple — becoming nine different educational assistance programs. Today, OTA serves more than 11,000 students.

At Western, TRIO boasts a well-equipped and established team to support students in many ways: director, Christopher Solario; assistant director, Adrian Trujillo; educational advisor, Alicia Monrroy; educational advisor, Andres Hernandez-Galvan; first generation coordinator and educational advisor, Dana Nunez-Silva; educational advisor, Hayden Campos; educational advisor, Logan Bransfield; educational advisor, Brianna Jones; and Sharon Price, TRIO student enrichment program office coordinator.

Director Christopher Solario has been involved with TRIO since 2000, but has been a leader in the program since 2012. The program itself has been at Western for more than 35 years. “I loved it as a student and I really enjoy it as the director,” said Solario.

Solario oversees TRIO and SEP. Occasionally, he works with students, regarding them as his favorite part of the job. “Seeing (first-year students) as kind of wide-eyed, kind of nervous, not knowing where they’re at — and then four to five years later, seeing them walk across the stage, graduating. It’s exciting to see their growth … just seeing how much they’ve grown as a person, as a human and as a citizen. It’s wonderful.”

Educational advisors assist students in the TRIO and SEP program by helping them with virtually whatever they might need — class registration, reaching out to professors, finding resources or even just needing someone to talk to. These sessions act as one-on-one advising.

According to the SEP page on Western’s website, services include academic advising, partnering with Destination Western, communicating with other departments on campus, support advising, individualized instruction, student-focused seminars, admission to cultural-enrichment activities, access to textbooks, MacBooks and other resources and organized social programs to invoke a sense of community and unite students.

“Even if we don’t know the right answer right away, we will work to get you the answer. We will connect you to the right resources,” said Dana Nunez-Silva, who began with SEP three years ago. “If you don’t even know where to start, your TRIO advisor is a great place to start.”

The main feature that students are aware of is the educational advisors. Each student admitted into the TRIO program at Western receives an educational advisor, with full-time advisors having a caseload of approximately 70 students.

“It’s really great that you (can) have this rapport with a staff on campus that you hopefully feel comfortable to talk to or ask questions,” said Nunez-Silva. “A social support that hopefully empowers you to take initiative of your academic journey, because I think coming in, especially as a first-gen student, it’s scary.”

“Our advisors care about our students,” said assistant director, Adrian Trujillo. “We try to do our best to make sure that when they leave the office, they’re in a better space than they originally came into, or at least have a better understanding of their path towards their graduation. That’s the end game for a lot of students, making sure they reach graduation.”

Most of TRIO is comprised of first-generation students, with the bundle of offices, workspaces and seating generally titled the “First-Gen Center.” Here, members of TRIO are invited to study, collaborate and enjoy a space catered to their needs, although anyone is welcome and does not need to be a part of the program in order to occupy the area.

Outside the wall of windows in the main area, a small body of water, titled the “retention pond” sits; nearby, the lending library offers donated textbooks to be borrowed. Even a care cupboard, courtesy of Abby’s House, is available to provide snacks and other possible necessities.

“We really wanted to have a space for our students who identify as first generation to come in and hang out,” said Trujillo. 

With all new amenities, the Student Success Center is an adequate community resource for the growing program — lending itself to nearly 400 students across campus.

“I think that we’re all just very thankful to be in this new space. And we’re all very excited to see how this community is going to flourish in this new space, because it’s a beautiful, beautiful building,” said Nunez-Silva. “We’re very lucky to be here.”

TRIO was founded on the concept of accessibility, community and advocating for students who may need it. In light of that, educational advisors pledge to consider their advisees and support them with their needs.

With that goal in mind, the program at Western has established free first-year seminars for students in SEP.

“The overall theme for (the classes) is helping students who are within our program have a better understanding of how to navigate higher education, give them the tools and skills that they need,” said Trujillo, occasional teacher of said classes. The lessons are meant to shine a light on things students may not be aware of, such as credit scores or navigating their identity as being first generation, low-income or having a disability.

In Solario’s words, first-year seminars are to prepare students for college as a whole — “What does it take to be a college student? What’s the difference? What’s the expectations from a professor? How do you approach classes? How do you study? How do you balance your time?”

Time management is something TRIO places a lot of emphasis on, not only covering it in class but also through “TRIO talks” — workshops — that take place throughout the term. Occasionally, prizes or gifts are offered with workshop attendance, but the goal is to walk away more informed than before. The schedule for events is found on SEP’s social media, SEP student weekly emails and can easily be found in the First-Generation Center.

Some of these workshops focus on financial literacy or FAFSA completion, with financial aid being a large problem for many TRIO students.

TRIO Teacher Prep Student Support Services is also an opportunity for education majors at Western to receive support and resources. Eligibility depends on being first generation and meeting financial requirements. Through this, students may receive academic advising, mentoring and tutoring, teacher licensure exam workshops, financial literacy development, FAFSA and scholarship help, student success seminars and workshops and career development services. The program is overseen by Director Sheree Solario and encompasses a small staff, including a bilingual Spanish-English educational advisor, to better provide for student teachers.

Nearly half of Western’s student population is first generation, plenty of whom are not involved with TRIO despite their eligibility.

Misconceptions about TRIO include the concept of being first generation. “Neither parent graduated with a bachelor’s degree. They can have parents that attended school, but as long as they didn’t graduate with a bachelor’s degree, you’re still considered first gen,” said Trujillo. “I like to say, you can have an aunt, an uncle or a dog that gets a bachelor’s degree — that still makes you a first-generation student.”

Secondly, TRIO is not a remedial program. “I would say that the biggest thing I would want people to know is that this is a program that actually works when it’s utilized the way it’s meant to. As a student, you have got to also put in the work,” said Nunez-Silva. TRIO paves a pathway to success, and, according to Solario, has high expectations for involved students.

Nunez-Silva’s office sits closest to the front desk as the first generation coordinator. Her position goes beyond TRIO, tying in with Student Support Services and the Tri-Alpha Honor Society, a new organization looped into Western’s ever-growing community. Nunez-Silva will coordinate with the Tri-Alpha Honor Society to further elevate hardworking first-generation students.

Formal requirements for Tri-Alpha include having at least a 3.2 GPA, 45 credits completed and being a first-generation student. Eventually, positions at Western for Tri-Alpha will be established, such as a president position, which will include more coordination with Nunez-Silva and the community. Members of Tri-Alpha, however, have a minimal time commitment.

Eligible students who do not receive invitations to Tri-Alpha may reach out to Nunez-Silva if interested.

One important feat of TRIO is First-Generation Week, a celebration of students’ achievements over the course of multiple presentations, events and activities.

“There’s (about) three advisors here that were TRIO students at Western, so I think that just goes to show there’s definitely that ‘TRIO magic’ that people talk about — that they feel supported, not just supported enough to go through college, but supported enough to come back and give back to campus,” said Nunez-Silva. “I think that also extends to Western culture … There’s a lot of alumni that are here working now to give back, and so I think that, in general, the fact that this program has been here for 30 plus years says a lot about how dedicated the program is to continue serving.”

Trujillo has his own goal in mind: to help students flourish beyond expectations. “To help people get to a spot where they surpass me in a way — I think that’s how I view leadership … it’s really cheesy, but TRIO works.”

The Student Success Center is open until 7 p.m. each day, with TRIO hoping to eventually keep an advisor there till closing so students may be able to have drop-in appointments or receive help.

Students may apply for TRIO even after their first year at Western, but may be waitlisted. Solario hopes to expand the number of students which TRIO can assist, which is very likely considering TRIO’s expansion — not just a new building, but new positions, opportunities and events.

Why should we slow down?

In this fast-paced world, it can feel as though there is never enough time to do everything  needed and wanted to do each day. Between classes, work, internships, friends, family and much more, it can be overwhelming to anyone. At times, one may ask themself if they’re not doing enough, if they could be more organized or why does it seem like everyone else has it together? Maybe a different question is required — why is there so much pressure to do more? 

With never-ending busy lives, one might believe that slowing down in life is a luxury that cannot be afforded. In reality, slowing down is a necessity. As a society, younger generations are already facing major burnout in life. To combat this, it’s important to reconnect oneself to the present moment and relearn how to find balance in an ever-changing world. 

1. What are your priorities? 

In order to slow down, one has to figure out what’s important to us. Endless to-do lists can distract from what’s really important. By taking time to reflect on the things that bring peace and joy in our everyday lives, distractions can be cut out. If one is unsure on where to start, try looking at relationships with family and friends. Is there anything one would like to do more? Anything less? Once what’s important is identified, it’s easier to release unnecessary stresses that drain energy. 

2. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is an extremely important skill that everyone can benefit from. Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment. It includes observing one’s own thoughts, feelings and environment with an open and accepting attitude. It takes time to master mindfulness, but with lots of patience and a willingness to learn, anything is possible. 

3. Mindful Breathing

Pay attention to the sensation of one’s breathing as it moves in and out of the body. Try to breathe slowly and deeply, noticing how the air feels as it moves through the nose, fills the lungs and leaves the body. Allow the body to fully relax and feel as if it’s floating among the clouds. This practice can be done at any time, but it is especially helpful when one is overwhelmed or feeling disconnected. By focusing on what’s happening in the present, one can break free from the never-ending cycle of stress. 

4. Embrace Doing Nothing

Living in a time where productivity is highly valued, doing nothing seems foreign and wrong. Doing nothing is crucial in restoring mental and emotional selves. Whether it’s simply taking a nap, reading a book or people-watching, doing nothing is extremely vital for recharging one’s  mental batteries. Learning how to relax without guilt or pressure is extremely rewarding. One simple “nothing” activity is sitting out at night and looking up at the sky. The chilly air is refreshing and looking at the night sky can encourage one to reflect on their life as a whole. Giving oneself permission to take breaks and rest can lead to a more positive mindset about resting and can result in a higher level of productivity.

5. Reconnect with Nature

Nature has a magical ability to help individuals slow down. It allows for escape from modern responsibilities. Whether it’s in the park, garden or hiking in the woods, reconnecting with nature lowers levels of cortisol — the stress hormone — and improves feelings of emotional well-being. Nature reminds one of the simple pleasures of life, such as feeling the warmth of the sun on our skin or the calming sounds of the wind and water. One such place that encourages one to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the world is Peavy Arboretum. It has many different trails and it feels as if one is deep within the forest, when they’re relatively close to Corvallis. For anyone who wants to do this hike, one would recommend hikers to park in the small parking lot on 99W going South. 

6. Do Not Disturb

As technology continues to advance, people are relying on this powerful tool now more than ever. Whether it’s the constant notifications from email, Canvas, messages, Instagram, TikTok and more, it can become a distraction and eat up free time. Technology, especially phones, can feel as if they’re taking over lives. Just like any other relationship, setting boundaries is important. Some things one could do to limit the unnecessary stress is to turn off any notifications that are not essential. This simple step can make all the difference. As college students, many rely on our phones and laptops and it can be hard to completely take time away from busy schedules. Other than silencing unnecessary notifications, another important reason to take time away from phones is to strengthen in-person relationships. Spending too much time on phones only increases the feeling of being constantly overwhelmed. Setting boundaries in order to separate oneself from the online world allows one to prioritize important personal connections and experiences.

When life feels like a competition, slowing down can feel unproductive. But slowing down has shown the opposite effect. By embracing a mindful lifestyle, it can allow for the ability to feel truly alive and appreciate the smaller things in life. It is important to prioritize what’s really important in order to create a life that is more meaningful and fulfilling. Life is not about the destination, but about the journey — a journey that should be experienced and enjoyed.

Hunter under fire

Travis Hunter, the standout two-way player for the Colorado Buffaloes and 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, has recently found his personal life under intense scrutiny due to controversies involving his fiancée, Leanna Lenee. The couple have been engaged since February 2024, but have recently faced the blunt end of social media’s gimmicks.
The drama began when videos surfaced online depicting Lenee in situations that sparked criticism. In a TikTok posted by Lenee, she stated that Hunter would drive her to parties, wait outside in his car for hours, and then drive her home. Shortly after this, a video of her dancing inappropriately with another man surfaced, leading to speculation about the nature of their relationship. The footage, believed to be from several years ago, was spread throughout social media, leading to harsh criticism and negative attention.
As if the video wasn’t bad enough, more accusations surrounding Lenee’s behavior surfaced. When Hunter was awarded the highly sought after Heisman trophy, his fiancée didn’t stand up to congratulate him until Colorado coach Deion Sanders nudged her shoulder, prompting her to do so. Another situation that caused fans to believe she was out of line was at a scheduled event where Lenee was caught on video angrily stating, “I have to sit here the entire time you take pictures with fans?” Among these viral videos was also a clip of Sanders jokingly picking up a stack of books, telling Hunter, “I’m gonna do your prenup for you, it’s gonna be about this thick.”
This situation not only attracted attention from fans, but also from notable figures in the sports world. Former NFL wide receiver Dez Bryant publicly advised Hunter to reconsider his relationship with Lenee, suggesting that she might not be the right partner for him. Other celebrities such as NFL stars Aaron Rogers, Ocho Cinco, Shannon Sharpe and rapper Bow Wow have been vocal about the situation, advising Travis to consider the consequences of staying with her.
In response to the unwanted attention, both Hunter and Lenee deactivated their social media accounts in late December 2024. Hunter expressed frustration over the invasive commentary, stating, “Y’all hate on me then you go hate on my girl … We’re inseparable. If she’s hurting, I’m hurting.”
Although Hunter and Lenee have chosen to maintain a low profile on social media, they are still planning a wedding for May 2025.
The ongoing drama truly highlights the difficulties faced by young athletes in today’s day and age, where personal relationships are commonly subjected to public scrutiny. As Hunter continues to prepare for his professional career, the couple’s ability to withstand external pressures will certainly play a significant role in their future together.

The 2024-25 NCAA college football Bowl games delivered exciting matchups, showcasing exceptional talent and outstanding team performances. Here’s a breakdown of the highlights from the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl and Peach Bowl.

Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Oregon
In the Rose Bowl, Ohio State came out with a commanding 41-21 victory over Oregon. Ohio State’s defense came to play, limiting Oregon’s playmakers and forcing critical turnovers. The win solidified Ohio State’s place as a semifinal contender in the expanded College Football Playoffs.

Cotton Bowl: Ohio State vs. Texas
The Cotton Bowl featured a clash between Ohio State Buckeyes and the Texas Longhorns in the semifinals. The Buckeyes emerged victorious 28-14, as Ohio State’s defense stifled Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, preventing the Longhorns from gaining any momentum. Offensively for the Buckeyes, they were able to deliver crucial plays that eventually sent them to the national championship game.

Sugar Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Georgia
Notre Dame pulled off a 23-10 upset over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, showcasing their presence on defense. The Irish stunned Georgia’s rushing attack, while quarterback Riley Leonard managed the game effectively with timely throws and smart decisions. Georgia struggled to generate points against Notre Dame’s defense, which paved the way for the Irish to advance.

Orange Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Penn State
The Orange Bowl provided fans with a thrilling semifinal matchup, with Notre Dame narrowly defeating Penn State 27-24. The Irish showed their grit by overcoming a fourth-quarter deficit, capped off with a 41-yard field goal by kicker Mitch Jeter. Penn State’s offense put up a great effort, but fell just short against Notre Dame’s late-game execution. If Notre Dame is able to win it all, it would be their first championship in 36 years.

Peach Bowl: Texas vs. Arizona State
The Peach Bowl gave spectators one of the most dramatic games of the season, with Texas defeating Arizona State 38-35 in double overtime. Quinn Ewers executed key drives for the Longhorns, including a clutch touchdown pass in second overtime. Two missed field goal attempts by Texas kicker Bert Auburn helped keep Arizona State in the game. Ultimately, the Sun Devils’ defense couldn’t hold off Texas.

These standout bowl games highlighted the best of college football, with top tier competition that set the stage for an exciting conclusion to the 2024-25 season.
