Wildcard weekend matchups

Wildcard Weekend offered up a small number of matchups, with teams facing each other in hopes of making their way into the NFL playoffs and the road to the Superbowl. Before the weekend started, only two teams had secured their spots in the playoffs: the Baltimore Ravens for the AFC North and the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC West.

With the wildcard matchups, some players ended up facing their former teammates and coaches, and some teams met their match following their program’s history.

Houston Texans v. Cleveland Browns, Jan. 13 — In March of 2022, the Browns announced a trade for Texans’ quarterback, Deshaun Watson. During the 2023 season, Watson was injured and replaced with backup quarterback, Joe Flacco. Since starting, Flacco has led the Browns to their eleventh win and has led the Browns to victory in four of five games. Had the Browns won, Flacco would have faced his old team, the Baltimore Ravens.

Kansas City Chiefs v. Miami Dolphins, Jan. 13 — Historically, the Miami Dolphins have lost eight straight games in weather colder than 40 degrees. This is not anything new for the team, as their record in cold weather temperatures is 25-46-1, and all but one of those games have been on the road. With a projected high of six degrees and a low of negative seven degrees, the Dolphins fell to their odds of loss. 

Dallas Cowboys v. Green Bay Packers, Jan. 14 — The last time the Packers lost to the Cowboys was in October of 2016, and the team has not lost to the Cowboys in Dallas in recent history. The Packers even lead their matchups in NFC divisions and playoffs 5-4, and with this win, the matchup record comes to 6-4.

Detroit Lions v. Los Angeles Rams, Jan. 15 — In 2021, the Rams and the Lions traded their starting quarterbacks, Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff — Stafford to the Rams and Goff to the Lions. Since the trade, the two quarterbacks have maintained similar stats in their seasons. The Lions have gone 13-5 and the Rams finished 10-8. This was also the Lions’ first playoff game in thirty years, and Stafford’s first time playing in Detroit since the trade was made. 

Saturday Night Football — Houston Texans 45, Cleveland Browns 14; Kansas City Chiefs, 26, Miami Dolphins 7

Mens rugby participate in Pacific Coast All Star

Every year, National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) hosts men’s and women’s Collegiate Rugby All Stars, where skillful and dedicated players are selected to represent their schools on an all star rugby team. 

The NCR evolved from the National Small College Rugby Organization, NSCRO. Its goal was to support the growth and development of small college rugby, as well as having equal opportunities for men’s and women’s rugby. They still support this goal, but also focus on furthering the growth of collegiate coaches, players and teams. 

The NCR runs five major national championship events, including the men’s and women’s XVs National Championship after the Fall season, the Collegiate Rugby Championship 7s in the Spring and the mid-year All-Star Tournaments, bringing in the best players from around the country. 

All star players are observed playing in clubs or colleges throughout the year and those selected are considered to be some of the best; this year, three members of Western’s very own men’s rugby team were selected to demonstrate their skills on the Pacific Coast Grizzlies all star team. 

Junior, Isaac Bare, Senior, Braedon Eltagonde and Senior Sangato Letisi, were among the best when selected to be part of the Grizzlies. The three traveled down to Austin, Texas last weekend, Jan. 6-7, with the help and contributions of people in the Western community. 

The Grizzlies started out strong with their first match on Saturday against the Independent Whites — high energy, hard hits and motivation made for a successful first game with a 12-0 win for the Grizzlies. Letisi holding down every scrum, Eltagonde’s efficient defense and Bare with a beautiful catch in the lineout, were no doubt essential in this win. 

The Grizzlies had a difficult battle the next two matches and ended the weekend 1-2. Regardless of the end score, it was clear that Bare, Eltagonde and Letisi represented Western with pride and showed why they deserve to be all stars.

Division I changes and what’s going to change

Fans of college athletics are no stranger to the conference realignments announced back in October 2023 — changing the way the Division I matchups would look this coming fall. Western itself is no stranger to conference changes: the 2022 football season was the first year of play in the Lone Star Conference. 

These conference changes come in the wake of the networks and conferences paying their student-athletes for using their names, images and likenesses in various settings, such as advertising. This isn’t saying that student-athletes could be paid for their performance; however, it does mean that student-athletes could now sign partnerships with companies such as Reebok and Vuori, an athletic clothing brand. These two brands have both signed Louisiana State University athletes Angel Reese and Olivia Dunne as ambassadors.

This new ability to be paid for name, image and likeness, rather than performance, allows student-athletes to pursue business interests outside of their university and their respective athletic programs. However, even within this, there are issues.

The NIL — name, image and likeness — deal takes away the amateurism aspect of college athletics, pushing it closer toward the professional side of athletics. In their long-standing history, college athletes had not been able to accept payment surrounding their sport, to remain amateurs in their field — amateurism defined as only playing the sport in which they were recruited and not receiving payment. That being said, a college football player could also play pro baseball and be paid for baseball.

When the new conference changes are discussed, they are usually only looked at in how college football will be affected, meeting mixed reactions. Many fans have stated that the PAC-12 conference, consisting of the majority of West Coast Division I universities, had only been kept relevant due to the football programs at the University of Oregon and the University of Washington. On Jan. 8, X user @tpuffer18 posted to the social media platform: “So the Pac12 never won a national championship?”

This mindset of the conferences being only recognized for their football program is a large issue. Within the last seven years, the PAC-12 has won 38 national championships, in sports varying from indoor track and field, and beach volleyball to soccer. Many PAC-12 athletes also go pro; the most famous of these athletes is Adley Rutchsmann, one of two starting catchers for the Baltimore Orioles. 

The PAC-12 is not the only conference that has member schools leaving; the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas are both joining the SEC, the Southeastern Conference, in lieu of the Big 12 Conference. The SEC boasts member schools such as Auburn University, the University of Georgia and the University of Mississippi, commonly known as Ole Miss. 

So why is this such a big deal? With these new conference realignments, student-athletes now have further to travel for competitions and new weather environments they would not initially encounter in their home states. An example of this is the PAC-12 schools transferring to the Big 10 conference. Members of the Big 10 often play in heavy rain and snow during the playoff and Bowl season, something PAC-12 athletes are not accustomed to. 

In the College Football National Championship, this was not a problem as it was played in Houston, Texas at the NRG Stadium — home of the Houston Texans. During this game, Michigan, a Big 10 school, faced the University of Washington, and won 34-13, falling as number one and two nationally. 

However, these gridiron conferences, while boasting strong football programs and truly proving the saying “any given Sunday,” do not bode well for other sports and programs within these conferences. 

An example of this lives in college softball. For three years in a row, the University of Oklahoma has won the National Championship for Softball, with big competitors coming from Texas, Alabama and Georgia. Originally, Texas and Oklahoma were both parts of the Big 12 Conference, with Alabama and Georgia in the SEC. 

However, these four schools now being in the same conference makes for a less competitive Softball World Series; these programs may end up being knocked out of the bracket in early play, due to each team knowing how they play. This could very much be the reality for many of the sports programs.

There is, however, a perk to these conference realignments. The lesser-known Division I schools, ones that never initially had a dog in the race, now have a higher chance of participating in the National Championships. Fans of college softball can never forget the time James Madison University nearly beat the University of Oklahoma during the 2021 Women’s College World Series.

There are pros and cons to the NIL deal and its change for the college athletics landscape. Athletic programs that were once strong can now meet their downfall in its first season; similar to how Western’s football team has not had a winning season since they joined the Lone Star Conference.

Where nature and human nature intertwine

I grew up country. I’m not talking suburban outskirts country, but rather an unincorporated town, population four hundred and twelve, hay bales on the side of the road kind of country. The kind that someone would have to go out of their way to get to. 

Yet, it was within that capsule of limited population and small-town idealism that I got to see the wonder of simplistic living in my backyard. I didn’t grow up with technology, so my days were spent flipping through paperback books, playing outside with my sister and dad and finding any part of the earth to mess with outside. 

We foraged for mushrooms and wild blackberries, or put on big rubber boots and stomped in the mud. We stared up at the sky, rode four-wheelers out in the large, unoccupied field in our backyard and climbed a huge tree with my dad, who built platforms for us to sit down and take in the expansive view of the meadow. 

When I got into middle school, all of a sudden, phones and tablets were introduced to my world. I met people who spent their childhood behind a computer monitor, or playing on concrete sidewalks or “fake playgrounds,” as I like to call them. Who on earth would need to build all that when you could have trees and dirt piles and slug kickin’ in your backyard? 

My classmates in middle and high school told me that it was shameful to have a country home, embarrassing to have grown up without using Snapchat or playing video games, and I was young, so I believed them. 

When COVID-19 forced everyone back into their homes, I suddenly had the opportunity to travel back in time and revisit my childhood. I stayed at home, and I spent time outside where my old friends, the flowers, the grass and the sunlight were. I could forage for berries, lay in the dirt and spend time in the home that I was once ashamed of. It was then that I realized — there is no life more fulfilling than this. 

I felt horribly, deeply saddened by those who didn’t grow up the way I did — the people who spent their time trapped in concrete jungles, surrounded by asphalt and car engines and Xbox systems — and, frankly, it just didn’t seem like the right way to live. I was mad that at some point in my life, I was envious of the people who lived the way they did. 

As I grew up, I saw more of the world. Perhaps the most eye-opening experience for me was traveling to Hartford/New Haven, Connecticut. When I arrived there, the sky was the wrong shade of blue. It was pale, tinted with a sickly yellow, and I felt unsettled. I figured out a short while later that it was air pollution. I looked around and all I saw was concrete and pollution — a dulled out life. I knew that I wouldn’t be happy living there. It felt suffocating. 

My belief system after COVID had only been reinforced after seeing city life in different areas of the US, and I had come to the very important conclusion that the world feels best where it is untouched. We, as human beings, have destroyed, pillaged and burned the earth. We have buried it in cement, poisoned it with exhaust, littered it with plastics and oils and ruined a very large portion of what used to be, in my opinion, something precious. 

But the inherent need for us as human beings to connect with the earth cannot be ignored. We are one with the world and we cannot exist in a society where Mother Nature is being plundered for profit and reshaped at the cost of our rivers, mountains, trees and fields. 

What I would encourage everyone to do, at least, in the most serious way possible — touch grass. Go drive to the coast and stare at the ocean, or lay down in the dirt, take vegetables from a nearby crop and run away like a Hobbit. Whatever inspires us to traverse outside of the house, outside of the city and into the natural world, existing as designed. 

As I sit here writing this article, I know a large portion of readers are not the biggest fans of country music. But Keith Urban sang something that I remember every so often because it used to play on the radio as I spent my childhood running around in the great outdoors: 

“I’m gonna kick off my shoes and run in bare feet. Where the grass and the dirt and the gravel all meet. Goin’ back to the well, gonna visit old friends. And feed my soul where the blacktop ends.”

Western students struggle with safe on-campus dining

Valsetz Dining Hall is a required amenity for on-campus freshmen and a necessity to many other on-campus students. Given that many students are required to have a meal plan with Valsetz, one would assume that its food would be high quality, nutritious, inclusive, and most importantly, safe. 

Unfortunately, one would be incorrect in this assumption.

Valsetz has consistently had a problem with serving moldy, undercooked, and improperly prepared food, such as leaving feces in the food. Valsetz has also struggled with safely serving students with allergies, has racked up complaints from students of unlabeled ingredients and has been caught claiming to have food that is not available. Additionally, Valsetz has a critical lack of allergy food training within the kitchen, confirmed by a Valsetz worker.

Nearly every student who has paid for the dining hall has a horror story, and a disproportionate amount of students have experienced mild to severe cases of food poisoning due to the food they were served. Food-related illnesses have a significant influence on students’ education — affecting attendance and the ability to keep up with homework. 

Food poisoning is not an issue to be taken lightly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 128,000 people a year suffer from food poisoning while 3,000 people succumb to this ailment in the US alone. It’s not surprising that Western students are now avoiding Valsetz Dining Hall after hearing stories from their peers or experiencing illnesses themselves.

Moldy bread, raw chicken, feces in shrimp, and many other unsafe food products have been served to the students of Western, resulting in terrible tales of food poisoning. 

Out of 10 randomized students and workers who have a meal plan at Valsetz, only three haven’t had a stomach ache, mild to severe food poisoning, raw food or an allergic reaction. Three of 10 spoke of light stomach reactions to the food, one of 10 spoke of mild food poisoning, one of 10 spoke of severe food poisoning, one of 10 spoke about eating raw chicken and three of 10 said they haven’t had negative experiences. 

Although, those who did not experience these things first-hand spoke of friends getting food poisoning, one even mentioning the story of a roommate getting food poisoning seven times from Valsetz in one school year.
Multiple students explained their stories of food poisoning. One anonymous student is quoted saying that after eating Valsetz steamed vegetables, “I was throwing up for days and was just throwing up literal stomach acid. They had to close the bathroom and use an ozone machine in it because the stomach acid was creating such a toxic smell and environment.” 

Another anonymous student said they were “…severely ill for a week” due to moldy bread on a sandwich. 

This is just a fraction of the many food poisoning stories breaking out across campus.

It is important to note that staff cannot be the blame for this. Staff members of Valsetz deal with plenty of their own problems such as being underpaid, understaffed and not having enough materials or time. The root of the problem is the dining hall isn’t getting sufficient funding.

This is shown through interviews with staff. One worker, who wanted to stay anonymous due to fear of getting into trouble, states that the fault does not lie with the student workers or the cooks, but with the managers. The workers began with their own experience with food poisoning when they ate a noodle bowl and had food poisoning for two weeks straight, with constant trips to the bathroom — another case of food poisoning greatly affecting a student’s academics. 

The interviewee spoke about their experience with training, which they received little to none. This lack of training particularly pertained to training around safe food handling and, as the interviewee states, “We are unaware about how to safely handle the food and there’s been no clear explanation for how to keep the food separate for dietary needs.” 

When managers were asked, each manager responded differently. However, even this may not even be the manager’s fault as they may have a lack of training as well — clearly this goes to the top. 

The lack of training surrounding dietary needs is extremely dangerous, as some allergies are fatal. There have been many complaints, as stated earlier, of dietary restrictions not being met and allergic reactions occurring.

The anonymous Valsetz worker ended the interview stating, “That’s what made the work walk out necessary. During one of the lunch shifts, all the student workers walked out, protesting the unsafe food handling, the immense amount of waste and the unfair treatment of some of the workers. Although our concerns were heard and some things have changed, the process is slow and ineffective. The problems are being ignored and avoided by the managers.”

Many students are concerned that their tuition is being dispersed to other organizations on campus, and not to those that they use daily — such as their main source of food. Additionally, accessibility has become an issue for students who have dietary restrictions and who do their best to regulate the food they consume — their needs are not being fully met. 

Regardless, many students contract food poisoning whether they have a dietary restriction or not — simply consuming the only food that is accessible to them. 

CJ Denison, a sophomore and Resident Assistant at Western, recounted their Valsetz experiences since becoming a Western student. The RAs, who are paid primarily in food and board, are given the top meal plan to spend at the dining hall — only to be faced with potentially unsafe food. “I’ve reached a point with Valsetz where I mostly buy protein drinks and snacks and not the actual food they serve, because I don’t trust it,” Denison said.

The safest food options are also not necessarily the healthiest. “The fried food, which unfortunately is the least healthy, is generally the safest, because it’s cooked all the way through, and there’s not a lot of cross-contamination,” Denison said. 

Cross-contamination is a major concern for students who have a gluten intolerance or Celiac disease, as well as for those who have other severe and life-threatening food allergies.

Many students have pointed out that the labels on each food item are not quite descriptive enough. Nutrislice, the online menu, does describe each item, but ingredients are not posted in person. Students may be consuming food they are not aware will cause them to have a reaction.

To make matters worse, another dilemma for college students with dietary restrictions is the rising price of safe foods offered by Valsetz. Gluten-free food is typically more expensive than its gluten counterparts. Because of the cost of a university education, and other costs of living, many students find themselves skipping meals and struggling to pay for healthy food.

If you find yourself in this position, Abby’s House, located on the first floor of the Werner University Center, provides basic needs resources for students who may be struggling with food insecurity. Additionally, the Food Pantry — located in the Welcome Center — provides students with food at no cost.

Even if the dining hall isn’t the only food option on campus, it should be working to provide a safer dining experience for all students who rely, or are forced to rely, on its services.

WOU’s switch to the No Credit system

Western is making the decision to introduce a new grading system called a No Credit grading system. This system would include the replacement of a D- through a failing grade with a “no credit.” 

Western’s official press release states that “…it’s about student success, not lowering standards.” This means that a failing grade would not impact a student’s overall GPA.

Students worry that this change will lower school standards and that transcripts and degrees from the college will hold less significance to future employers. Provost Jose Coll states that this change was meant to increase graduation rates and keep students at Western.

Coll also states that GPAs will now accurately reflect the student’s success rate, although it is unclear how excluding a student’s grade earned will not accurately reflect the student’s success rate.

As the student body worries about the quality of their degrees and how seriously Western is taken as compared to other universities, Western, according to the press release, approaches the topic with the ideas that learning will become more important than grades, there will be an overall reduction in grade anxiety and students will focus on the possibilities that may come with academia. Western also aims to lower student discouragement, with students dropping classes and even out of school due to low grades. 

Attempts were made to contact the Financial Aid Department, but they could not be reached. According to the SAP Policy, a grade NC does not apply towards completing the number of credit hours that are needed. It is unclear if an NC will affect scholarships the way an F would. 

This new grading system has proven to be concerning, but the university claims that the change is for learning and academic exploration and of course, retention rates. Students worry the value of their degree will decrease, which would negate the money and GPA-saving aspect of the No Credit system. The pros and cons of this system are currently unknown variables, but important for the student body to fully understand.

Facebook’s birthday party

On Feb. 4, our beloved Facebook will turn 20 years old — you heard that right, 20. Facebook began as a small website where college students could interact with others and give their friends some simple status updates

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg created the network in 2004 to give Harvard students a place to connect. By 2005, Facebook.com became an official place for people to connect and be that profile for people to click on. In 2006, Facebook expanded from schools, such as Harvard, Yale and Stanford, to the rest of the non-academic world, which made the users skyrocket to double from the previous year. 

It quickly grew successful as thousands of people began to join the site. Facebook originally was going to be called Facemash, but because of some complications, Facebook was deemed the better fit. 20 years later, it is now among the most successful social media sites, let alone a media network, in the world. 

Facebook went through a rebrand in October of 2021 and now is referred to as Meta or the Metaverse, which also includes Instagram, X, formally known as Twitter, and Linkedin, generating billions of users daily in the United States alone. 

People carry Facebook with them every day, making it easy to check on one’s status and like posts. Now, it’s worth mentioning that Facebook didn’t reach success without a touch of controversy. One memorable controversial instance was the lawsuits between Zuckerberg, the Winklevoss twins and Paul Ceglia. 

The Winklevoss twins claimed that Zuckerberg was supposed to aid in their creation of a social media site and instead used the code and information for Facebook. Paul Cegila, on the other hand, invested in Facebook when Zuckerberg was getting the plans in order and Paul didn’t receive his shares, leading to his lawsuit. 

This controversy was so large, that a film was made out of it, “The Social Network.” An agreement was made on these lawsuits: the twins received a 65 million dollar settlement and Paul agreed to continue receiving shares so it’s unsure how much was paid but based on Facebook’s revenue, it’s a large sum.  
Despite the challenges Facebook has endured, that hasn’t stopped the site from becoming a revolutionary piece of social media history. Many people visit Facebook every day, liking, committing, watching clips and even selling their items on the website marketplace. Facebook is a part of our lives and carries our history along with the 20 years it’s been around.
