The Physical Space

Northeast Wing of Second Floor

Hamersly Library is in the nascent stages of a “Learning Commons Redesign,” repurposing space dedicated to print journals and other little used resources.  Since a coffee shop is intended for the “recreation collection” area on the first floor (see the diagram below), a new, quieter space is needed for digital production. This also provides the opportunity to reimagine the purpose of the current TRC, possibly orienting it more towards digital production (which is 95% of the activities that take place in the current TRC anyway) and away from general technology training.

Although the “Computer Alcove” on the southwest wing of the second floor also has possibilities, the “AV Materials” section is currently being considered as the primary option:

The “AV Materials” area would allow for two private digital production rooms and an office (HL 220).  The larger digital production room (HL 222) could be turned into a mini television studio, complete with green screen, cameras, and digital production equipment.  The second digital production room (HL 221) would be used primarily for audio recording and editing.  In addition, several digital editing stations (with Macs or PCs) would be placed in the open area.  Currently, the AV Materials area is full of shelving dedicated to VHS tapes, DVDs, and CDs.  Shrinking this shelf space (through weeding or moving) would allow for more of the area to be used for digital production, collaboration, or meetings, but that could be phased in over time.

Technology Resource Center (TRC) – Current Space (First Floor)

Since moving from the Instructional Technology Center (ITC) in August 2013, the TRC has been located in the northwest corner of the first floor of Hamersly Library.  HL 123 was converted into an office and HL 122 was converted into a barebones Digital Production Room.  The full contents of the current TRC can be found at wou.edu/trc.
