Henry Gunn
was born orn in Kentucky in
July of 1898. After serving
as a Navy sailor in World
War I, he attended the Oregon
Normal School (ONS) in Monmouth,
Oregon. Gunn completed his
schooling, and earned an Education
degree in 1923.
After graduation, Gunn moved
to Umatilla, Oregon, where
he began teaching and coaching
at Umatilla High School. By
1933, Gunn had moved to Portland
where he was assistant principal
and, later, principal of Lincoln
High School. Gunn remained
at Lincoln High School until
1940, when he was appointed
to Superintendent of Portland
Schools. He held this position
until 1944, when Gunn accepted
the same position in the Eugene
School District. Between 1933
and 1944, Gunn received his
Masters at the University
of Oregon and his Doctorate
at Stanford University.
In 1947, Dr. Gunn returned
to the campus in Monmouth
as the Oregon College of Education
(OCE) president. Dr. Gunn's
tenure witnessed a jump in
school enrollment, a new library
(now known as APS)
on campus, and additions to
the north end of the Campus
Elementary School building
(now known as ITC).
By 1950, Dr. Gunn was ready
for a change, and accepted
a position at Palo Alto School
District in California as
superintendent. Dr. Gunn would
remain at this job until his
retirement. In 1961, he was
awarded the Distinguished
Service Award from the American
Association of School Administrators.
Dr. Henry Gunn died in his
home in California in December
of 1988 at the age of 90.
