I found this advertisement in my work mailbox. Apparently there is a way to learn a Foreign Language that I did not know about: eating candies. To learn French, you can eat bonbons with a béret …
gummy Eiffel towerrs…
or “French culture bars”, the culture being summarized by the very modern game of pétanque (le cochonnet), Joan of Arc (vive la France) and Napoléon (le petit Caporal). (Well, I should look at the bright side, there are no spelling mistakes).
The “exclusive product” stamp tells you that no French ever has eaten these kind of candies, because they don’t exist in France. And do I need to mention that eating candies is not helpful to learn a Foreign Language?
As I was saying in my last post, stereotypes have healthy days ahead of them. I can excuse it when it’s advertising for study abroad. It’s harder to accept when the goal is to make money by encouraging students to eat candies that are not even French!
