Chapter 9 Online

Bennett / Nelson Cross Sections of a Cube Applet

Go to the Bennett & Nelson Student Center by clicking here:

On the left menu, select Chapter 9. Wait for the page to reload (you might need to click outside of the chapter selection box), then scroll down and in the middle (sort of towards the right), under the words about "Cross Sections of a Cube," click on: Click Here to Launch the Applet. Once you have launched the applet, play around with it a bit to see how the applet works. Note that the applet is mouse-driven. You click to select points with the mouse arrow and you click in the cube area and move your mouse to rotate your view.

Assignment

Look at all of the items in the drop down menu (also listed below). Your assignment is to:

1. (1 point each) Create the items in the drop down menu and print a picture of each item. Each printed picture must say "You have successfully created a ITEM cross section" where ITEM refers to the list item you are working on.

2. Answer the following questions
a. (2 points) Which shape was hardest to create and why?
b. (2 points) Are there any listed shapes that are not possible? Explain why in detail.

HINTS
It is somewhat easier to play around and find some of the various shapes than it is to directly try to find the shape. When you reset the applet you lose your shape, therefore you should use scratch paper and keep track. For example, if you have the applet set on "Scalene Triangle" and you form a Square you won't have the correct message for a square (it will say: The selected points can not form a scalene triangle cross section). However, you will know how to form a square--jot down a note on how to create the square, reset, select the square from the drop down menu and repeat the selected points to successfully create a square.

The shapes you must form are:

  1. Scalene Triangle
  2. Isosceles
  3. Equilateral
  4. Square
  5. Non-square rectangle
  6. Isosceles Trapezoid
  7. (Non-isosceles) Trapezoid
  8. (Non-rectangular) Parallelogram
  9. Non-regular Pentagon
  10. Non-regular Hexagon

The parenthetical words are not listed on the applet but they are assumed by the applet.
