Antivirus is a confusing matter

It’s called antivirus, but there are tons of other types of malware out there. So…do those programs also scan for spyware, adware, and other threats?

We may be beyond the days where viruses made the evening news, but that doesn’t mean that viruses and other malware are gone forever. They’re there, more than happy to infect your computer and add it to a botnet or spam everyone in your contact list. On the bright side though, with some common sense, a good understanding of what you’re up against, and the right tools, you can keep your PC safe pretty easily.

My personal Recommendation is to have both a AV program installed as well as an anti-spyware program.

How do I rescan/reprogram TV channels?

A lot of student are asking about TV channels, and how to see them.  All TV’s are different in terms of rescanning procedures. The following is a general guide, but the steps or the terminology may be different for your device:

1) Press the “Menu” button on your TV, or TV remote
2) Go to “Setup” or “Settings”
3) Go to “Installation” or “System” or “Channels”
4) Go to “Scan channels”, “Program channels”, “Autoscan”, “Autoprogram”, or “Autotuning”
5) Press “Select” or “Enter” or “OK” to start the scan

Spring Term is upon us

Spring term has started off nice and calm.  Students are heading in and need a lot of computer help.  Systems need updated and computers need registered.  We have seen a steady stream of students over the past few days.  Most of the issues have been with registering computer with the NAC and setting up gaming devices.  Within two days 44 gaming devices have been registered and setup.  Back to the madness…

Room sign-up for Fall 2013-2014

Students have been signing up for Fall 2013-14 housing.  The Form that they can find in their Portal must be filled out by April 3rd at 5pm.  Housing will be putting on a Roommate Mixer on April 11 at 6pm.  This will be a great place to find a roommate for next year.  And if you are lucky you may find a roommate with a priority date that is before yours and will help you get the room you want.  Room sign-up night is April 16th from 5pm to 10pm in the Pacific room at the WUC.

Augmented Realty Applications

Here’s how it works: turn on your smartphone video camera, then point it at your property. The augmented reality app will overlay data about the property in your viewfinder. This could include things like vacant units, or repairs that need to be finished. To get specific details, simply touch one of the onscreen captions.

This might give the possibility of interactive data during room tours. Further investigating of this technology would be needed but could have huge potential.

Online Work Order System

I added family housing on Knox to our Online Work Order system. This involved some initial studying of the code from the previous programmer. Finished up the update fairly quickly, but now the real work began. This update affected several other programs we use. I ended up having to update about 6 other programs that deal with buildings and the resident groups. An example is preventing Knox students from accessing the online meal point additions application. Another example is with gaming devices and limiting access to that as Knox students get their internet from an off campus provider. This process added a few days to the project. I knew I was going to have to do this during the initial evaluation of the update. Everything is now live and working.
