What you should watch on Netflix

Students often ask me for French movie recommendations, so here are a few  films you can find on Netflix that I recommend

“Les combattants” (love at first fight).  Very interesting first movie which came out in 2014.  It’s not exactly a comedy, it’s kind of a love story but not a very typical one.

“deux jours une nuit” (two days one night, 2014).  It’s a social drama, a woman (Marion Cotillard, she got an oscar for her role as Edith Piaf) must visit all her colleagues to convince them to drop their end of year bonus so she can keep her job.  It does not seem that way, but it’s  pretty riveting to watch her struggles .  It’s a Belgian movie by the Dardenne brothers.

“le prénom” (what’s in a name, 2012).  Comedy:  An hilarious movie about a family who is having the worst argument ever when one son says that he is going to call his first child “Adolphe”.

“le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain (Amélie, 2001).  Comedy and romance.  A classic, watch it if you have not yet.  It’s a fee good movie and a love story and it’s pretty and the music is great.  It’s rated R, but I’m not sure why.  Hardly any nudity and no violence.

“Je suis Charlie” (2015).  A documentary about the terrorist attacks in January 2015 in Paris against the satirical newspaper “Charlie Hebdo”.  I have not watched it yet, so not sure if it’s any good, but I thought that some people might be interested.
