The measure addresses taxes on hospitals and insurance companies to fund Medicaid, which provides healthcare coverage to 1 in 4 Oregonians. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Arguments in support of Measure 101<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taxes imposed on insurance companies and hospitals would provide funding for healthcare for low-income individuals and families.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Measure will stabilize insurance premiums purchased by individuals and families.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over 1 million Oregonians benefit from the Oregon Health Plan. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All Oregonians will have access to mental health care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A \u201cno\u201d vote would require budget cuts to be made in other areas of the state budget.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Arguments in opposition of Measure 101<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Measure 101 will impose a tax on student health plans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Middle-class families that don\u2019t qualify for government-funded health plans will pay an increased healthcare tax.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oregon school districts will pay $25 million for healthcare taxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Medicaid provides healthcare to immigrant children illegally residing in Oregon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Increased taxes will affect small businesses more than insurance companies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visit oregon.gov for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contact the author at journalnews@wou.edu<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sam Dunaway | News Editor Oregon Measure 101, Healthcare Insurance Premiums Tax for Medicaid Referendum, is on the ballot for the special election on Jan. 23, 2018.
