{"id":6489,"date":"2017-10-11T01:22:40","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T09:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wou.edu\/westernjournal\/?p=6489"},"modified":"2017-10-10T19:24:45","modified_gmt":"2017-10-11T03:24:45","slug":"football-redeems-itself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/football-redeems-itself\/","title":{"rendered":"Football redeems itself"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00eb<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Strickland | Managing Editor<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After a two-week dry spell, Wolves\u2019 football got back into the action with an 82-21 road win against Simon Fraser University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Oct. 7, the team travelled north to Burnaby, B.C. to face off against Simon Fraser and along the way ended up setting a new school record for the Wolves and tying an old one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team racked up a record-breaking 82-points \u2014 the highest amount to scored since a 2012 game between the Wolves and Dixie State, which set the record at 66-points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senior quarterback Nick Duckworth\u2019s six touchdown passes led him to tie the record for most touchdown passes, previously set in 2013. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team gained 604 offensive yards for the day, against Simon Fraser\u2019s 248-yards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt all started with our week of practice. We focused on pushing the ball down the field in practice which resulted in big plays throughout the game,\u201d said Duckworth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the game, Western consistently sat above Simon Fraser on the scoreboard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wolves started out strong in the first quarter, with senior Paul Revis scoring a 59-yard, eight-play touchdown. Simon Fraser scored one touchdown in the first quarter, opening up the field to the Wolves. At the end of the first quarter, the board read 24-7. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A similar scoring pattern continued throughout the game, with the Wolves scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter and Simon Fraser inching behind them with their second touchdown of the game. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The score was a promising 44-14 going into the third, and continued to look-up from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEarly in the third quarter I threw a touchdown to Paul Revis, and after that I knew our defense would be able to hold on from then on,\u201d said Duckworth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wolves finished out the game with an additional four touchdowns and a field goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This game continues Western\u2019s winning streak against Simon Fraser <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 a streak that began in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wolves are back home on Oct. 14 to go against currently undefeated Central Washington University.
