At approximately noon Wednesday, Feb. 5, hundreds of protesters lined up on both sides of Center Street north of the Oregon State Capitol building in defiance of President Trump, the deportation of illegal immigrants, Project 2025, Palestine\u2019s destruction and Elon Musk. Oregonians came together for the 50501 movement, calling for 50 protests in 50 states in one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many boasted signs and flags in respect to a variety of issues surfacing in America. Various chants rose above car horns blasting from supporters driving past: \u201cThis is what democracy looks like,\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re not going back,\u201d \u201cHey, hey, ho, ho, Elon Musk has got to go,\u201d \u201cBe loud, be clear, immigrants are welcome here\u201d and \u201cFree, free, free Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cToday I\u2019m here in solidarity with all working class people \u2026 we are facing \u2014 this has been an issue since forever \u2014 but right now, we\u2019re at the precipice of some serious change,\u201d said one protestor. \u201cIt\u2019s important for people to show up, but there are people who are physically disabled who can\u2019t be here, and I\u2019m here representing my friends who can\u2019t come out and be in the streets, but they\u2019re also an integral part of our movement. We all matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One woman \u2014 @theladyofportland on TikTok \u2014 was seen live streaming from atop her car, standing over the crowd. \u201cI\u2019m here to deport Musk and impeach Trump,\u201d she said. \u201c(I\u2019m streaming because) I have a lot of followers. Because we\u2019re at a protest, the biggest protest since Black Lives Matter \u2014 it\u2019s even bigger than Portland\u2019s (protest.)\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Multiple American flags flew, alongside various Pride flags and transgender flags. Some signs referenced educational concerns alongside reproductive rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the 50501 movement, more than 60 protests across 40 states have been arranged and turnout has amassed 72,000 participants nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fourth-year Western student Desiree Hite, who attended the protest, stated, \u201cEverybody matters. Everybody\u2019s equal. Everybody deserves to live here and be here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
