{"id":21177,"date":"2024-05-28T17:46:44","date_gmt":"2024-05-29T01:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/?p=21177"},"modified":"2024-05-28T17:47:30","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T01:47:30","slug":"holocaust-memorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/holocaust-memorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Holocaust memorial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Written by: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hannah Field | News Editor<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In commemoration of the lives lost in the Holocaust and violence tied to World War II, Western continued their annual tradition by placing thousands of flags along Monmouth Avenue from May 3 \u2013 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Western\u2019s description of the event on the school-wide calendar directly quoted the Holocaust Encyclopedia for a definition: \u201cThe Holocaust was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million European Jews by the Nazi German regime and its allies and collaborators. The Holocaust was an evolving process that took place throughout Europe between 1933 and 1945.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese flags are meant to be a large, powerful display representing the lives of millions lost,\u201d said Western\u2019s calendar description. \u201cThere are different colored flags that represent the lives lost of certain peoples. The yellow flags represent the biggest number of Jewish lives lost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multiple other flag colors lined the streets during the event, such as blue, red, white, green, brown, orange, purple, pink, lime green and light blue.
