{"id":2071,"date":"2015-11-07T14:34:21","date_gmt":"2015-11-07T22:34:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wou.edu\/westernjournal\/?p=2071"},"modified":"2015-11-07T14:34:21","modified_gmt":"2015-11-07T22:34:21","slug":"lock-it-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/lock-it-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Lock it up"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>By: Jenna Beresheim\r\nNews Editor<\/pre>\n<p>Jennifer Halley, a fifth year English major, and several neighbors in the area, awoke to the fact that their cars had been broken into and any valuable contents stolen, on Oct. 26, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard a lot of shuffling and thudding going on in and around my neighbor\u2019s car and storage unit,\u201d recounts Halley, \u201cI assumed it was my neighbor just making a lot of noise, and almost went outside to tell him to be quiet, but I fell asleep instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This break-in had occurred sometime after midnight, and also included the theft of Halley\u2019s bike, along with valuables from the other two vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Brianna Bonham, first year social science major, was also contacted by Public Safety on a separate account to inform her that the car beside her own had been broken into.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey told me my car was fine, that there was just a couple pieces of glass on the hood, and that was it,\u201d said Bonham, who was asked by Public Safety to describe both her car and the affected vehicle, as well as if she was aware of the broken window.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Chiles, the Director of Campus Public Safety, urges students and Monmouth residents to keep all valuables outside of their vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t want it stolen, don\u2019t leave it in your car,\u201d Chiles reminded, \u201cand don\u2019t forget to register your bikes with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of students think we\u2019re only open eight to five like the rest of campus,\u201d admits Chiles, \u201cbut we are open and available 24\/7.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Bonham was not personally affected by this event, it still raised awareness to the fact of what could happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made me a little nervous about my car because they were right next to each other, so I was concerned that it might happen to my car too,\u201d said Bonham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event made me feel violated and really angry,\u201d said Halley, on the other end of the spectrum, \u201cit made me question how safe I feel here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Halley\u2019s advice follows the same vein as Chiles\u2019: don\u2019t keep important things in your car.
