Usually, throughout the winter or the colder months, a person\u2019s depression will increase, while subsequently, the person\u2019s depression will decrease during summer or warm months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Generally, seasonal depression l<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/seasonal-affective-disorder#:~:text=About%205%20percent%20of%20adults,and%20less%20sunlight%20in%20winter.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">asts about 40% of the year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It is thought the specific causes of seasonal depression disorder are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/seasonal-affective-disorder#:~:text=What%20causes%20SAD%3F,more%20melatonin%20when%20it's%20dark.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">less sun and the change to shorter days, causing a chemical change in the brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, leading to higher rates of depression. Melatonin and serotonin are found to play a role in causing depression, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/seasonal-affective-disorder#:~:text=What%20causes%20SAD%3F,more%20melatonin%20when%20it%27s%20dark.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the body produces more melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/seasonal-affective-disorder\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20364651\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">less serotonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> when it is dark out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seasonal depression is a common form of depression, with about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/seasonal-affective-disorder#:~:text=About%205%20percent%20of%20adults,and%20less%20sunlight%20in%20winter.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5% of people over the age of 18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> having seasonal depression, but it is rarer in children. Seasonal depression disorder affects a high amount of college students specifically \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/counseling.appstate.edu\/pagesmith\/212#:~:text=Nearly%2025%25%20of%20all%20college,cloudy%20areas%20of%20the%20country.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">affecting approximately 25% of college students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The most common symptoms of seasonal depression include sleepiness, lowering of interest and pleasure, withdrawal, decreased concentration, weight gain or loss, headaches and stomach aches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The symptoms can have a great impact on college students&#8217; learning, and because such a great number of college students experience the disorder, sharing ways to deal with this disorder is important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For all people suffering from this disorder, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/seasonal-affective-disorder#:~:text=What%20causes%20SAD%3F,more%20melatonin%20when%20it%27s%20dark.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">three main treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for seasonal depression. Firstly, finding sunlight is important \u2014 whether this is through soaking up sunlight whenever possible, light therapy, or even, at the least, taking some Vitamin D.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/psychotherapies#:~:text=Psychotherapy%20(sometimes%20called%20talk%20therapy,patients%20in%20a%20group%20setting.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Psychotherapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a therapy that assists a person with recognizing and altering emotions, thoughts and behaviors, is another treatment option. The third treatment is using medication such as antidepressants, which can be accessed through Western\u2019s Student Health and Counseling Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are also ways college students specifically can help their disorder. These include maintaining a regular bedtime, creating a balanced school and sleep life, going to the SHCC for help and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seasonal depression disorder should not just be put off as \u201cthe winter blues\u201d. It is an actual disorder that is very real and can have intense effects on people and is important to address. Seasonal depression\u2019s negative effects on a person can get in the way of learning but more importantly, quality of life.
