{"id":19540,"date":"2023-02-08T12:06:48","date_gmt":"2023-02-08T20:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/?p=19540"},"modified":"2023-02-08T12:07:23","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T20:07:23","slug":"black-history-month-returns-to-western","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/black-history-month-returns-to-western\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month returns to Western"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Written by: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mirella Barrera-Betancourt<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Feb. 1 and Feb. 2, the Multicultural Student Union hosted a two-day celebration to kick start Black History Month \u2014 the annual, honorary observance of African-Americans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the event on Feb. 1, MSU \u2014 in partnership with the Black Student Union \u2014 held a panel featuring Maya Hopwood, Amari Hendrix, Fowzia Abdi, Justice Presley and Professor Mike Wilson. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., students, staff and faculty engaged in a raw, thought-provoking and educational discussion on the experiences of African-Americans in America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the second day, a museum put out by MSU was opened for public viewing in the Columbia Room of the Werner University Center. Individuals had the opportunity to learn about African-American figures in history \u2014 such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Kobe Bryant. The \u201cDon\u2019t Touch My Hair\u201d display \u2014 which has become a custom tradition at Western to showcase \u2014 was also available, as well as a display for \u201cBlack Pride\u201d and \u201cBlack HerStory\u201d \u2014 the latter of which showcasing the various historical Black women who produced a remarkable impact. All students were encouraged to attend, regardless of racial identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, Black History Month\u2019s central focus is on the theme of Black Resistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The theme explores and calls for discussions regarding African-American\u2019s consistent efforts towards attaining control over their physical and intellectual autonomy through education, literature, politics, legislature and armed resistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BSU is including this theme as a part of their commemoration and for the remainder of February, students have the opportunity to engage in Black History Month through a range of campus events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, BSU is introducing a few new activities to spark engagement, such as the Black Resistance Gallery, which will be open for viewing Feb. 15. Additionally, as of Feb. 1, \u201cBeyond Having a Black Friend: How to truly support Black people in your life\u201d \u2014 a Google Docs form \u2014 is open for student, staff and faculty comments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To celebrate Black History Month, Abby\u2019s House has put up window displays of black women who have substantially shaped the world.
