{"id":183,"date":"2014-11-06T01:44:12","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T01:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wou.edu\/westernjournal\/?p=183"},"modified":"2014-11-07T00:45:25","modified_gmt":"2014-11-07T00:45:25","slug":"volleyball-serves-up-first-conference-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/volleyball-serves-up-first-conference-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Volleyball serves up first conference win"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>BY RACHEL SHELLEY\r\nAND CHIANNA TOLTON\r\nSPORTS EDITOR\r\nAND FREELANCER<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Western Oregon University Volleyball<br \/>\nhad their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference<br \/>\n(GNAC) win of the season in Lacey,<br \/>\nWash. against Saint Martin\u2019s University Saturday<br \/>\nOct. 25, where they finished 3-1 (25-<br \/>\n12, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21) in the match.<br \/>\nLeading the team offensively was redshirt<br \/>\nfreshman outside hitter Alisha Bettinson,<br \/>\nwho added 10 kills and five aces for the<br \/>\nWolves.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019ve been really close in a lot of<br \/>\nmatches this year,\u201d said Bettinson. \u201cWe finally<br \/>\nput everything together to put ourselves<br \/>\non top.\u201d<br \/>\nSenior setter Jordin Ramos added a<br \/>\nteam-high 24 assists while freshman setter<br \/>\nKiana Cash dished out 18 for the Wolves.<br \/>\nSenior opposite hitter Hannah Deede and<br \/>\nredshirt freshman middle blocker Sydney<br \/>\nBlankenship grabbed nine kills and a teamhigh<br \/>\nfour blocks each.<br \/>\nFour Western players added doubledigit<br \/>\ndigs led by sophomore outside hitter<br \/>\nChristie Colasurdo with a match-high 26.<br \/>\nWestern started off on a 7-2 run in the<br \/>\nfirst set followed by a 6-3 run by Saint Martin\u2019s<br \/>\nto bring the score within two, 10-8. Bettinson<br \/>\ngot her third service ace of the first set<br \/>\nto bring the Wolves on a 6-1 run, bringing<br \/>\nthe score to 16-10. The Wolves scored an unanswered<br \/>\nfive points before closing the opening<br \/>\nset with a 4-1 run.<br \/>\nThe second set saw an early 10-3 lead<br \/>\nby the Wolves where they were able to keep<br \/>\ntheir momentum with a 7-1 run and finishing<br \/>\nthe set 25-19. The third set was won by<br \/>\nSaint Martin\u2019s, where the Saint\u2019s scored the<br \/>\nfinal seven points after being behind to earn<br \/>\nthe 25-21 victory.<br \/>\nThe fourth set opened up with the<br \/>\nWolves scoring the first five points. Ramos<br \/>\nbegan the 6-2 lead with a kill. The score was<br \/>\ntied at 20-20 after the Saint\u2019s made a run but<br \/>\nthe Wolves were able to finish the set and the<br \/>\nmatch with 5-1 run, earning the Wolves their<br \/>\nfirst GNAC conference win.<br \/>\n\u201cError free is carefree,\u201d said senior outside<br \/>\nhitter Sam Moore. \u201cWe really took that<br \/>\ninto the match and the scores showed it.\u201d<br \/>\nMoore had eight kills, three blocks and an<br \/>\nace contributing to Saturday night\u2019s success.<br \/>\nThe Wolves welcome University of Alaska<br \/>\nto Monmouth Saturday, Nov. 1 where play<br \/>\nwill start at 7p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY RACHEL SHELLEY AND CHIANNA TOLTON SPORTS EDITOR AND FREELANCER &nbsp; Western Oregon University Volleyball had their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season in Lacey, Wash. against Saint Martin\u2019s University Saturday Oct. 25, where they finished 3-1 (25- 12, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21) in the match.
