But here at Western, students have the ability to contribute their votes in another important election \u2014 student government. ASWOU is Western\u2019s collective student government which mimics that of the national government system, with three branches \u2014 the executive cabinet, judicial board and the senate \u2014 each with their own unique roles in assisting the campus community. Each year, students have the opportunity to vote in the ASWOU elections and decide who will be representing them in the upcoming year. This year, the positions for President, Vice President, Senate President, Judicial Administrator, Justice and Incidental Fee Committee Member are open and students are able to vote on WOUEngage through May 8. Students can learn more about the candidates and their positions by visiting wou.edu\/aswou\/elections\/ or by reading the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Candidate for President: <\/b><span>N.J. Johnson<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/NJ-Johnson.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15882 alignnone\" width=\"256\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/NJ-Johnson.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/NJ-Johnson-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>Johnson currently serves as the Director of State and Federal Affairs under ASWOU\u2019s executive cabinet. As such, he states that he is \u201cthe only candidate for President that has experience working within the executive branch of ASWOU and with the Oregon State Legislature,\u201d where he has led a team in advocating for student needs. As President, he plans to continue \u201cpushing our legislative priorities,\u201d which include fighting \u201cfor higher state funding, food insecurity solutions and a DREAMers access program,\u201d he says. He values collaboration and wants to continue to work with campus organizations as well as the Oregon Student Association to \u201cpromote the goals of students across the state of Oregon.\u201d As President, he will strive for fairness, transparency, and inclusivity and stand up to the WOU administration when these values are jeopardised and students are undervalued. He is endorsing Maria Barerra for Vice President, Kevin Figueroa for Senate President, and Steven Richmond for Judicial Administrator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Candidates for Vice President:<\/b><span> Maria Barerra and Litzy Loeza<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maria Barerra:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Maria-Barrera.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15881\" width=\"255\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Maria-Barrera.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Maria-Barrera-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>Former Director of Multicultural Advocacy in ASWOU Maria Barerra is a DACA Recipient and a first generation college student. She is also an avid and vocal advocate against social injusticesI was able to overcome adversity through my college experience at Western. The importance of her advocacy is why she wants to run for Vice President. Her qualifications include holding numerous leadership positions such as positions through the UNIDOS Club, as a Multicultural Mentor, and an Oregon Student Association board member. She strives to \u201censure that all students are being represented\u201d and \u201cpromote equality and recognition,\u201d while continuing \u201cthe efforts of providing a physical and permanent safe space for students to be able to express their identities and culture freely,\u201d she says. She has endorsed N.J Johnson for President, Kevin Figueroa for Senate President, and Steven Richmond for Judicial Administrator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Litzy Loeza:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Litzy-Loeza.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15878\" width=\"256\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Litzy-Loeza.jpg 480w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Litzy-Loeza-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Litzy-Loeza-400x516.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>Loeza is an experienced student leader \u201cworking for growth, transformation, and inclusiveness.\u201d Previously, she worked with Latinx and Immigrant Communities in Portland Community College\u2019s DREAMer Center. As a Psychology and Sociology major, she is passionate about fighting social injustices and does so through her role as a current ASWOU Senator. She also holds multiple leadership roles through the MECHA Club and as a Multicultural Representative mentor. She believes \u201cour community can create an inclusive environment, support the rights of students, and make educational success attainable\u201d and promises to use her platform to \u201cadvocate for our rights as students and promote changes within our education system to ensure student success.\u201d She endorses Marilyn Maldonado-Dominguez as President, Liz Marquez Gutiererrez as Senate President, and Denisse Carrasco as Judicial Administrator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Senate President Candidates: <\/b><span>Kevin Figueroa, Liz Marquez, and Diana Ordaz<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kevin Figueroa<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Kevin-Figueroa.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15877\" width=\"256\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Kevin-Figueroa.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Kevin-Figueroa-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>Figueroa is a first generation college student looking to \u201cempower student leaders to promote change for those who also struggle.\u201d During the 2018-19 school year, he served as the Director of State and Federal Affairs through ASWOU and has significant experience working to create legislation beneficial for students. He strives for cooperation between all branches of student government to ensure productivity and wants to remain involved with advocacy even after graduation. He endorses N.J. Johnson for President, Maria Barerra for Vice President, and Steven Richmond for Judicial Administrator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Liz Marquez<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Liz-Marquez.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15879\" width=\"255\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Liz-Marquez.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Liz-Marquez-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>Marquez has served on the ASWOU Senate for over two years and has developed experience in writing and sponsoring legislation \u201cto protect students\u2019 rights and improve student life.\u201d She considers higher education accessibility and affordability to be an important issue and has advocated for this issue through her previous position as a member of the Tuition and Fee Advisory Committee. She also brought these issues to the capitol, where she worked alongside the Oregon Student Association to educate legislators about their relevance. She is determined to \u201cwork on issues that students have expressed interest in,\u201d and wants to \u201cencourage and empower students to get involved and participate in the ASWOU senate.\u201d She endorses Marilyn Maldonado Dominguez for President, Litzy Loeza for Vice President, and Denisse Carrasco for Judicial Administrator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Diana Ordaz<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Diana-Ordaz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15876\" width=\"201\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Diana-Ordaz.jpg 520w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Diana-Ordaz-152x300.jpg 152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>A \u201cpassionate and hardworking student,\u201d and \u201ca friend to all,\u201d Ordaz believes that her open-mindedness and caring personality makes her an excellent candidate for Senate President. She chose to run for Senate President because she \u201cheard so many students\u2019 issues and can relate to many of them.\u201d She is committed to helping the WOU community by communicating \u201c(students\u2019) ideas, thoughts and issues,\u201d through her platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Judicial Administrator Candidates: Denisse Carrasco and Steven Richmond<\/strong><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Denisse Carrasco<\/strong><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Denisse-Carrasco.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15875\" width=\"258\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Denisse-Carrasco.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Denisse-Carrasco-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Denisse-Carrasco-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>Carrasco says she has felt \u201cunderrepresented and not understood\u201d as a first-generation college student. As such, she feels strongly about making sure students feel a part of the campus community, and is dedicated to uplifting \u201cunderrepresented communities and their diverse needs.\u201d She has devoted hundreds of hours to organizations like MECHA and ASWOU, and is an advocate for multiculturalism as an MCR mentor. Carrasco hopes to be a\u00a0 \u201csupport system for students and student clubs,\u201d and to increase outreach for these clubs which \u201cenhance the student experience at WOU.\u201d She feels \u201cit is important for WOU students to feel a sense of empowerment, support, and belonging, in any institution they attend,\u201d and is endorsing Marilyn Maldonado Dominguez for President, Litzy Loeza for Vice President, and LIz Marquez for Senate President.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Steven Richmond<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Steven-Richmond.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15883\" width=\"255\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Steven-Richmond.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Steven-Richmond-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>Richmond is a future law school student with \u201can extensive background in legal work\u201d due to working for two Oregon state representatives. He founded the Jackson County Young Democrats Caucus, was Vice President for South Medford\u2019s Debate Team, and was Secretary for WOU\u2019s Model United Nations Club. He considers himself to have a \u201cdeep appreciation, respect, and care for the judicial process.\u201d As Judicial Administrator, he plans to make sure all clubs are treated fairly and hold all ASWOU officials accountable to the constitution. He assures that \u201cthis campaign isn\u2019t about personal goals or pushing an agenda, it\u2019s about helping ASWOU become the best possible government it can be for its students by upholding fairness, inclusion, and justice for everyone equally.\u201d He endorses N.J Johnson for President, Maria Barrera for Vice President, and Kevin Figueroa for Senate President.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Justice Candidate:<\/b><span> Taylor Bartholomew<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Taylor-Bartholomew.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15884\" width=\"256\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Taylor-Bartholomew.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Taylor-Bartholomew-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>A current Sophomore and Criminal Justice Major, Bartholomew has an interest in working with \u201cindividuals within the system that are in need of psychological rehabilitation, specifically victims of abuse and other trauma-related events.\u201d She has \u201calways enjoyed providing an ear to individuals that need emotional support and am always willing to help establish boundaries when need be.\u201d As ASWOU Justice, Bartholomew plans to provide students with a fair and balanced Justice system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Incidental Fee Committee Member Candidate: <\/strong>Makana Waikiki<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Makana-Waikiki.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15880\" width=\"287\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Makana-Waikiki.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/files\/2020\/05\/Makana-Waikiki-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Waikiki says&#8221; a vote for me would be a vote for yourselves.&#8221; She wants to vocalize every students concerns when it comes to their fees and strives to make informed decisions about the IFC process. She wants to establish a legacy where future IFC members are provided with the best tools and plans in place so that &#8220;every student gets everything they should out of their IFC funds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>Students also have the ability to \u201cwrite in\u201d any person they think would be qualified for the positions. Students have until Friday, May 8 to submit their votes and results will be released shortly thereafter.
