One event new to this year was the introduction of three-minute presentations on a historical figure or event related to black history, such as the Black Panthers, the Birmingham Bombings, Andrew Foster and Janelle Mona\u00e9. Tati Whitlow, the membership outreach coordinator for BSU, said the event was \u201chighly successful because of its high turnout rate,\u201d adding that multiple organizations came to the event \u2014 such as the Stonewall Center and Heritage Hall Government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whitlow said that the idea for the three-minute presentations derived from the realization that black historical figures and events weren\u2019t being represented in the classroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe picked people that weren\u2019t in our history books,\u201d said Whitlow. \u201cWe\u2019re all constantly learning \u2026 if you\u2019re not straight, cis and white, you\u2019re basically blacked out of history and it\u2019s horrifying.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The presentations were included in the Black History Month festivities, but Whitlow says they may continue afterwards, with student support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s something we\u2019re just now trying out \u2026 it was very fun and educational and it might be good to do on a monthly basis,\u201d they said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contact the author at <a href=\"mailto:howlnews@wou.edu\">howlnews@wou.edu<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sage Kiernan-Sherrow\u00a0 | News Editor February was Black History Month, and students from the Black Student Union at Western planned many events related to the celebration of black culture.
