This awards ceremony is an annual event on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was the 25th year of these awards here at Western,\u201d said Gary Dukes, vice president for student affairs.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s ceremony entitled \u201cLead Long and Prosper,\u201d was presented in a classic Star Trek theme, and even provided party-goers with the opportunity to utilize a photo booth featuring Kirk and Spock.<\/p>\n<p>The awards themselves are focused on recognizing students who display great effort and achievement in both their on campus, and off campus activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents can be nominated by anybody on campus, although it is usually faculty,\u201d said Dukes. \u201cThen, once a student has been nominated, there is a committee of faculty and staff who makes the final decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the awards were campus-wide nominations but some were department or club specific.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach department has their own process for award determination. Some are peer-selected, others are staff-selected and some are selected directly by the university committee,\u201d said Megan Habermann, assistant director for student leadership activities.<\/p>\n<p>Kylie Roth, recipient of the Julia McCulloch Smith Outstanding Graduating Women Award, said she felt \u201cvery honored and grateful\u201d to be given the award. Roth, a senior psychology major, also received the Karl Amspacher award and a Who\u2019s Who certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Roth has been chosen to be one of the speakers at commencement as a result of receiving the award. Roth said she still is not certain what she intends to speak about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn general, I plan to talk about the things that stood out to me during my four years at WOU and encourage all graduates as we move forward with our lives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Two other graduating students were selected to speak at commencement ceremonies after receiving their awards.<\/p>\n<p>Eli Zachary was announced as winner of the Delmer Dewey Outstanding Graduating Men Award, and Erica West Oyedele was announced as winner of the 2015 Outstanding Graduate Student Award.<\/p>\n<p>Oyedele was recognized by her supervisory professors for her work on her thesis entitled \u201cPersistence of African-American\/Black Signed Language Interpreters in the United States: The Importance of Culture and Capital.\u201d She was also recognized for her commitment to complete her program remotely from California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know exactly what they saw in me,\u201d said Oyedele, \u201cbut they saw something, and for that I am grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though the award ceremony lasted much longer than expected, winners and attendees left happy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a special, fun night, and my congratulations go out to all of the deserving winners,\u201d said Roth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Graduation commencement speakers chosen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":367,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_seopress_robots_primary_cat":"","_seopress_titles_title":"","_seopress_titles_desc":"","_seopress_robots_index":"","_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1447","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"modified_by":null,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1447","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/367"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1447"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1447\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1447"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1447"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wou.edu\/westernhowl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1447"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
