I served eight years in the Oregon Army National Guard as an Infantryman & Joint Fires Observer (JFO) in support of Infantry, Artillery, and Cavalry Scout units. From 2014 to 2015, I deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom\u2019s Sentinel. I’m a proud WOU alumni, and like many Veterans, my academic journey was not linear which gives me a personal understanding of the challenges that military-affiliated students often face in higher education.<\/p>\n
As Director of the Veterans Resource Center, I am committed to making the transition to college, the path to success at WOU, and the journey to graduation as welcoming and manageable as possible for every member of our military-connected community. My Name is Arthur David Anderson but everyone just calls me David. I joined the Marine Corps in 1991 at the age of 19 but suffered a back injury shortly thereafter. I had intended to follow in my grandfather\u2019s example and retire from the military, he spent 26 years active-duty Army. \u00a0After some recovery and soul searching, I married my wife of 26 years. Eventually, I found my way and earned a couple of degrees before settling down here at Western. It seemed like a good place to help those that want to make themselves better, or more educated at any rate. Hello friends. My name is Jackson Roach, I’m a dependent of a 26 year Air Force veteran. I’ve lived all over the country from Florida to Alaska with a couple stops in between. I enjoy fish keeping, buying and selling sports cards, as well as spending time with my wife. My degree path of choice is Aquarium Science. With this degree I hope to work at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga Tennessee and eventually start my own fish and coral wholesaling\u00a0 shop. I also have a great interest in ethical breeding of fish and coral to reduce the impact of fish keeping on the environment. I am the Director of the Veteran Resource Center here at WOU. I served ten years in the United States Army as an\u00a0Combat Medic in several Infantry Battalions. I was stationed primarily in Fort Bragg, NC and Fort Lewis, WA where I served in every position from line medic to platoon sergeant. I deployed five times during my stint in the service, three times to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan.<\/p>\r\n
I reignited my college career in 2014, almost immediately after separating from the Army. As was the case with many of my peers, college was not always easy for me largely due to some of the unique issues faced by many student veterans. I have since dedicated myself to the initiation and development of veteran supportive services in higher education. I completed my Masters in Info Tech here at Western in 2019.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
