New staff activate their Zoom account by clicking the blue \u2018Zoom\u2019 icon across the top of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/portal\">WOU Portal page<\/a>. The Zoom link in Portal opens the Zoom settings webpage where you can set preferences for Zoom, manage your meeting recordings, and schedule meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The Zoom application runs on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone. Launch Zoom by double clicking \u2018Zoom\u2019 on the Windows Desktop or opening \u2018Zoom\u2019 from a Mac\u2019s &#8216;Applications\u2019 folder. If you can\u2019t find Zoom on your computer, you may download it from <a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.us\/download\">this link<\/a> (download and install \u2018Zoom Client for Meetings\u2019)<\/p>\n<p>To log into Zoom, first sign in to the WOU Portal from your web browser. Then, from the Zoom application\u2019s login screen, click the \u2018SSO\u2019 button. Enter in &#8220;wou-edu&#8221;<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/ucs\/files\/2023\/02\/sign-in-with-sso.jpg\" alt=\"Sign in with SSO screenshot\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Zoom Phone<\/h2>\n<p>Western Oregon University uses Zoom as our Unified Communications platform. The Zoom application\u2019s menu bar will display a \u2018Phone\u2019 option if you\u2019ve been assigned a phone number. You\u2019ll use the Zoom client on your computer and\/or your smartphone to place and answer phone calls. You can even send texts with your WOU extension from Zoom Phone. More information specific to Zoom Phone is on the <a href=\"https:\/\/wou.edu\/ucs\/resources\/faq\/zoom-phone-frequently-asked-questions\/\">Zoom Phone Frequently Asked Questions page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Tips for Teaching with Zoom<\/h2>\n<p>Faculty at WOU have made amazing adaptations to continue educating remotely when required. Here are several suggestions if you\u2019re teaching all or part of a course over Zoom:<\/p>\n<h3>Test before class<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Verify you have Zoom installed and are able to sign in with the \u2018SSO\u2019 button. Once signed in, click the \u2018Profile Icon\u2019 in the top right and confirm you see see <i><username><\/username><\/i>@wou.edu next to the word \u2018Licensed\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Connect to a test meeting at <a href=\"http:\/\/zoom.us\/test\">http:\/\/zoom.us\/test<\/a> to verify your audio and camera work properly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Optimize your delivery<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re hosting from a large room or shared space, you\u2019ll want to use a headset to avoid an \u2018echo\u2019 sound for the students<\/li>\n<li>Try to have a light in front of you rather than behind<\/li>\n<li>Remember to look at the camera to create the effect of eye contact<\/li>\n<li>Speak at a natural voice level rather than as though you\u2019re \u201con speakerphone\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Use Zoom\u2019s tools to keep students engaged<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Plan moments to check-in with students using Zoom\u2019s built-in \u201cthumbs up\u201d feedback feature<\/li>\n<li>Tell students they can use the \u2018speed up\u2019 or \u2018slow down\u2019 buttons in Zoom to let you know if they\u2019re comfortable with your pace<\/li>\n<li>Use the \u2018poll\u2019 feature in Zoom to collect feedback from your students and keep them involved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many more teaching suggestions are included in <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.zoom.us\/docs\/doc\/Tips%20and%20Tricks%20for%20Teachers%20Educating%20on%20Zoom.pdf\">this document from Zoom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Hosting Large Events in Zoom<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s possible to host very large meetings in Zoom using the Webinars function. Zoom Webinars include special features like a higher maximum participants, the ability to specify \u2018speakers\u2019 and \u2018panelists\u2019, and extra security features like automatically muting all guests.
