He currently serves as the Head of Dance at <em>Western Oregon University<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He trained under Alito Alessi, and has a <em>DanceAbility <\/em>teaching certification and a <em>Stott Pilates <\/em>certification. Les Watanabe received his B.F.A in dance from <em>California Institute of the Arts<\/em> and his M.F.A. from <em>UC Irvine<\/em> as a Chancellor\u2019s Fellow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;read more&#8221; open_toggle_text_color=&#8221;#c4c4c4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; title_font=&#8221;||on||||||&#8221; title_text_align=&#8221;right&#8221; title_font_size=&#8221;14px&#8221; width=&#8221;100%&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; box_shadow_style=&#8221;preset3&#8243; box_shadow_spread=&#8221;-15px&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Les has been an Artist in Residence at <em>University of Oregon<\/em>, <em>University of California-Irvine<\/em>, <em>University of Arizona<\/em>, <em>University of Maryland<\/em>, <em>Portland State University<\/em>, <em>Theater An Der Wien<\/em> (in Vienna, Austria), and the <em>Rotterdam Academy<\/em> (in the Netherlands). He has also taught master classes at dance festivals in France, Austria, The Netherlands, German, and Spain.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his expansive career as a dance educator, Mr. Watanabe has had an illustrious career as a performer. He performed as soloist for <em>Donald McKayle\u2019s Inner City Repertory Company<\/em>, <em>Lar Lubovitch Dance Company<\/em>, <em>Joyce Trisler\u2019s Danscompany<\/em>, <em>Alvin Ailey II<\/em>, <em>Burch Mann Folk Ballet<\/em>, <em>Sachiyo Ito Japanese Dance Company<\/em>, <em>L.A. Jazz<\/em>, and with <em>Peter Goss Dance Company<\/em> in Paris, France.<\/p>\n<p>Performances in theater and television include Hal Prince and Stephen Sondheim\u2019s Broadway production of <em>Pacific Overtures<\/em>, <em>The Who\u2019s Tommy<\/em>, Leonard Bernstein\u2019s <em>Mass<\/em>, <em>Alvin Ailey Presents Duke Ellington CBS special<\/em>, the <em>Bill Cosby Shows<\/em>, Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, French variety television, and a national tour with Rita Moreno\u2019s (\u2018Westside Story\u2019) <em>The Act<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As a choreographer, Mr. Watanabe is known for his eclectic and stylistic dynamism. <em>Luna<\/em>, which he set for Djazzex in the Netherlands, was nominated for the <em>American Choreographers<\/em> Award and toured Europe for 1 year. <em>Cantes de Ida y Vuelta<\/em> (a dance illustrating Creolization of cultures in the New World) was showcased for <em>Univ. of California<\/em>, in the Los Angeles <em>Irvine and the Lester Horton Festival<\/em>. His theatrical credits include: Pajama Game, Blood Wedding, Company, Journey, Rhinocerous (<em>Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts<\/em>), Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream, Guys and Dolls, Beethoven n\u2019 Pierott (<em>Denver Center Theatre Company<\/em>); Judy Garland (<em>St. P\u00f6lten Stadt Theater in Austria<\/em>); Gift of the Magi (<em>Cleveland Playhouse<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The teachers who are the most influential in his career are Janice Gudde Plastino, Ph.D. As his first teacher at <em>Harbor Junior College<\/em> and then at <em>UC Irvine, <\/em>she gave Les encouragement, saying to him that it was possible if he \u201cworked hard for 10 years that he could make it as a dancer\u201d. A former dancer and artistic collaborator in the world-renowned <em>Pilobolus Dance Theatre<\/em>, Darryl\u2019s performing credits include the 1996 <em>Centennial Olympics<\/em> (in Atlanta, Georgia), and the PBS televised special for the 25th Anniversary of the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC (winning him an EMMY). Most recently, he performed at the <em>5th Annual Contemporary Dance Festival<\/em> in Mexico City, D.F.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> In the summer of 1999, Darryl taught contemporary partnering <em>Kalani Honua<\/em> in Hilo, Hawaii. He received a commission to choreograph a new work for <em>Nemian Contemporary Dance Company<\/em> in Mexico City, D.F. In the summers of 2000 &amp; 2001, he was the artist in residence for the <em>Santa Fe Dance Institute<\/em> held in Gainesville, Florida. Darryl\u2019s teaching appointments include visiting professor at the <em>University of Florida<\/em> in Gainesville, <em>Florida and Pusan National University<\/em> in Pusan, South Korea and as guest instructor at the <em>Centro Nacional des Bellas Artes of Mexico City<\/em>, D.F. and <em>Studio Dance Tanz<\/em> in Osaka, Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Darryl received his Masters of Fine Arts in performance and choreography from the <em>University of Hawaii<\/em>.
