Whitney was a beloved member of the American Sign Language family at WOU. As a result of a devastating auto accident in 2008 on a rural road in Oregon and twenty days after the accident, she passed away from a staph infection at age of 20. Whitney\u2019s untimely passing, her family and friends have created the Whitney Bellinghausen Endowed Scholarship to honor her life and to provide an opportunity for future students to realize Whitney\u2019s dream of studying at Gallaudet University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recipient of this scholarship must, at the time of receiving the award, be an enrolled student at Western Oregon University, participating in the ASL\/English Interpreting program as a major or pre-interpreting major, and be accepted as an exchange student at Gallaudet University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A memorial Cherry Blossom tree was planted for Whitney Bellinghausen after her death in 2008.
