For Professionals

So, you are serving a child with deafblindess. Now what? This page offers a look at key aspects of deafblindness, including communication, as well as resources that will help you best serve your child. We are always looking for new research and strategies, so please feel free to share what you know or have learned along your journey.

Communication

Communication is the cornerstone for working with children with deafblindness, and is absolutely vital for best outcomes.

Open Hands, Open Access: Deaf-Blind Intervener Modules

The National Center on Deafblindness provides modules for learning more about deafblindness and how to work with these children. The Oregon project can offer support for those interested in completing the modules.

Teacher Competencies

Guidelines, competencies, and resources for teaching children with deafblindness are offered by The Research Institute at Western Oregon University, the Council for Exceptional Children, and the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
