Helping others has always been a point of emphasis for me, but I craved the formal knowledge needed to affect change on a larger scale.\u00a0 Additionally, those in my community back at home are typically limited in this sort of dicipline, so I felt responsible for fulfilling myself and inspiring other in this meaningful way.\u00a0 Being involved in this department revealed the experiences needed to achieve this kind of change, which is very important to me. I have always been very interested in service leadership and contributing to the greater good in some shape or form and have always felt getting involved is the best way to initiate change. The Public Policy program here at WOU has introduced me to a variety of ways to do that. I’ve learned so much about how quality policymaking can positively impact our society through actively listening to the needs of the people and reviewing and reevaluating existing laws and practices so they can be altered to fit our needs now and in the future. “I transferred to WOU at the start of my Junior year, and that is also when I decided to change my major. Rather than pursuing biology I switched gears completely and began my journey towards a Political Science degree. I am extremely glad I chose WOU and this major. All of my professors and peers have been fantastic and I have learned so much. Politics can be a bit of a controversial subject, but what I have come to learn is that they are related to everything and everyone, daily. A career in political science will grant me the opportunity to improve the quality of life for people while allowing me to always grow and learn from new experiences. “I grew up in a small rural farm-working town that was predominantly Latino. I, along with many of my other classmates, were first in our families to go to college. Through the Public Policy and Administration\u00a0program at Western, I have been able to grow personally and professionally.”<\/span><\/p>\nFollowing his time at Western Oregon University, Anthony obtained a MA from Stanford University in 2015. He has now\u00a0started working for the Department of Administrative Services in the Chief Financial Office as an Assistant Budget and Policy Analyst. His main job duties involve the drafting of the Governor’s Recommended Budget and presenting agency budgets in his portfolio to the legislature.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n

Timothy DeMichele, WOU alumnus<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nPublic Policy and Administration major | Philosophy minor<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cStudying primarily in Political Science then Public Policy and Administration disciplines, my\u00a0journey through Western Oregon University can be summarized in three paradoxes. First, while\u00a0narrowing my learning from broad political states and world peace to administrative procedures\u00a0and collective bargaining agreements, my approach to problem solving has broadened. Second,\u00a0while challenging my faith in God in the classroom, the faculty in the Liberal Arts Departments\u00a0have absolutely supported me and mentored me toward my goals. Third, as opinionated as I am,\u00a0WOU gave me opportunities to voice my views in many formats and the faculty has graciously\u00a0listened to and engaged me.<\/p>\n
Immediately after Winter Term 2016, I will be entering full time employment in Oregon in local\u00a0government or an education field. My goals are to teach English in Laos, earn a Master\u2019s in\u00a0Education, teach and administrate in a Hawaii school, and serve as a public official someday.<\/p>\n
To all of the WOU faculty and staff who have made my education possible: thank you all for\u00a0your selfless service and sense of responsibility to teach people. I am very grateful to you. I, along with many of my other classmates, were first in our families to go to college. Through the Public Policy and Administration\u00a0program at Western, I have been able to grow personally and professionally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nFollowing his time at Western Oregon University, Anthony obtained a MA from Stanford University in 2015. He has now\u00a0started working for the Department of Administrative Services in the Chief Financial Office as an Assistant Budget and Policy Analyst. His main job duties involve the drafting of the Governor\u2019s Recommended Budget and presenting agency budgets in his portfolio to the legislature.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Third, as opinionated as I am,\u00a0WOU gave me opportunities to voice my views in many formats and the faculty has graciously\u00a0listened to and engaged me.<\/p>\n Immediately after Winter Term 2016, I will be entering full time employment in Oregon in local\u00a0government or an education field. My goals are to teach English in Laos, earn a Master\u2019s in\u00a0Education, teach and administrate in a Hawaii school, and serve as a public official someday.<\/p>\n To all of the WOU faculty and staff who have made my education possible: thank you all for\u00a0your selfless service and sense of responsibility to teach people. I, along with many of my other classmates, were first in our families to go to college. Through the Public Policy and Administration\u00a0program at Western, I have been able to grow personally and professionally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Following his time at Western Oregon University, Anthony obtained a MA from Stanford University in 2015. He has now\u00a0started working for the Department of Administrative Services in the Chief Financial Office as an Assistant Budget and Policy Analyst.
