PACK Advising

Students will have an appointment with an academic advisor to review their assessment results, explore and register for classes for their incoming term, and review online resources. These appointments can be completed virtually or on campus and are scheduled by students themselves, allowing for flexibility in timing and location.

Registration for fall courses begins May 8th, 2023.

First-Year Students

What To Expect

Advisors are excited to meet with you! Here’s what you can expect to happen in preparation for and during your first advising meeting:

  • All students will receive an email with instructions on how to set up a meeting with their advisor or advising team by late May (or when admitted, if later in the summer)
  • Most students will have the option of either virtual or in-person advising meetings
  • Your advisor will help you understand degree requirements, like General Education courses that all students take, as well as major requirements if you’ve declared one
  • Based on degree requirements and your academic and personal goals, advisors will help you choose some classes to take during your first term
  • Your advisor will help you get connected with appropriate resources for academic and personal support

How to Prepare

Learn about your major

Send in college-level credits

Have you earned college credits before starting at WOU? Some examples of previously earned credits may include:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) credits
  • College Now
  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • Running Start
  • Willamette Promise
  • Credits taken at another college/university

To ensure your records show those credits and to avoid retaking credits you have already completed, you will need to send official transcripts for those credits to WOU’s Admissions Office directly from EACH place you earned the credits from.

  • For electronic transcripts, have them emailed to: admissions@wou.edu
  • For paper transcripts, have them mailed to: Admissions Office | Western Oregon University | 345 Monmouth Ave. N. | Monmouth OR 97361

For any questions or additional assistance about transferring credits to WOU, you may contact the Admissions Office at (503) 838-8211 or email admissions@wou.edu

Take placement tests

Math Placement

Some, but not all, incoming students will need to take a math placement test in order to get started in the right classes for their major or degree. In general, if you don’t have any prior credit for math and are pursuing a science, math, or education-related major, it’s best to take the math placement test. Find more information about math placement here.

Language Placement

Language placement exams are not required. If you are interested in continuing in a second language (if you already have prior experience), you may take a language placement exam to determine what language class to register for. If you already have earned college credits for language classes, you most likely do not need to take a language placement exam. Language placement testing is available for the following languages:

  • American Sign Language: Testing available by arrangement with department. Click here for more information.
  • French: Testing available online. Click here for more information.
  • German: Testing available online. Click here for more information.
  • Spanish: Testing available online. Click here for more information.

How to Connect

Be sure to check your WOU email through your WOU Portal regularly, as this is how your advisor will be in contact with you to set up an advising session. You will receive initial advising information prior to the registration dates listed above. If you have any questions or experience any issues getting connected with an advisor, email advising@wou.edu and we will gladly help you!
