Housing Selection Frequently Asked Questions

HOUSING SELECTION – WHAT IS IT?

HOUSING SELECTION IS THE PROCESS USED BY INCOMING FIRST-YEAR AND TRANSFER STUDENTS WHO HAVE SUBMITTED A COMPLETED RESERVATION FORM WITH THE $50 RESERVATION FEE BY 5 PM – JULY 22, 2022. THESE STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SELECT THE ROOM AND ROOMMATE(S) OF THEIR CHOICE ONLINE!

The Housing Selection process is optional – but highly encouraged. It is entirely online. For details on the timeline for the 2022-2023 process, please see our Housing Selection Timeline page.

  • WHEN AND WHERE WILL I GET MY TIME-SLOT TO CHOOSE MY ROOM?

Anyone with a COMPLETED RESERVATION FORM received and ON FILE by THURSDAY, JULY 21 WILL HAVE A START TIME/DATE FOR THIS INITIAL PROCESS.  Your start date/time should be visible on your Housing Overview (Go to the WOU Portal and click on WOU University Housing) page by 5:00 p.m., Friday, July 22 (Tentative).

  • WHEN CAN I SEE MY SELECTION START TIME and DATE.

By 5 p.m., July 22, 2022 (tentative) your start date/time will be visible (provided you have a completed housing reservation on file) on your Housing Overview page. The selection process for spaces for Fall Term, 2022 is slated to begin July 25, 2022.

BEFORE THAT HAPPENS, the first thing(s) you will need to do are:
  • IF YOU WANT A ROOMMATE – FIND AND CONFIRM/MATCH with YOUR CHOSEN ROOMMATE(S). ONLY CONFIRMED/MATCHED ROOMMATES WILL SHOW UP AS AN OPTION TO BE PULLED IN WITHIN THE PROCESS. You will need to access My College Roomie (MCR) – our roommate search/matching software to get your roommate(s) confirmed BEFORE Selection begins: Access My College Roomie (you should have received an email from MCR  about how to access/use their software) to find and match with your perfect roommate.  Matched roommates in MCR will roll overnight into our housing system setting you up to pull your matched roommate into your room selection or to be pulled into a room selection by your matched roommate in July when Housing Selection will begin. NOTE:  Make sure that you confirm your roommate choice(s) in MCR BEFORE your selection start date/time roll around to ensure that your roommate confirmation rolls in overnight!
  • We will send out a reminder email in July prior to our targeted release of selection start times and dates. Once start date/times are posted – PLAN AHEAD – so that you (or the person in your group with the earliest start date/time) can access the system asap after your start time rolls around. The sooner you login and choose, the less competition you will have for the space you want!
    • Plan ahead so that you will be free when your start date/time roll around.
    • DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE A ROOMMATE?

Selection of a specific roommate is OPTIONAL. If you choose NOT to select a roommate, University Housing plans to place roommates in spaces for students who choose a double occupancy room, but do not choose a roommate via My College Roomie. (If you choose a double space, you will have a roommate).

    • DO I HAVE TO USE MY COLLEGE ROOMIE IF I KNOW WHO I WANT FOR A ROOMMATE?

EVERYONE WHO WANTS A SPECIFIC ROOMMATE NEEDS TO FIND AND MATCH WITH THAT ROOMMATE IN MY COLLEGE ROOMIE TO BE PULLED INTO A COMMON SPACE TOGETHER. Matches made in MCR roll overnight into our housing software setting you up to either pull in your matched roommate or to have them pull you into a room selection.

    • DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE MY SPACE ONLINE?

The online room selection process is OPTIONAL – though we encourage you to choose your space! If you choose NOT to select a space, the Housing Team WILL PLACE YOU IN REMAINING AVAILABLE  SPACES LATER THIS SUMMER. You can check your Housing Overview page after the online selection process has closed (Mid August) to see where you have been placed. Keep in mind that  your chances of being placed in your first choice may diminish with this option.

    • MY REQUESTED ROOMMATE DID THE ROOM SELECTION, DO I NEED TO DO IT AGAIN ?

If you and your roommate(s) did indeed match with one another on My College Roomie, then you BOTH should receive a confirmation email letting you know what room you have reserved or been pulled into. If you DO NOT receive that email, you have NOT been pulled in/placed and need to go back in the system and select the space with your roommate, or contact University Housing.

    • WHAT DETERMINES MY SELECTION TIME-SLOT START TIME?

All selection time-slots are assigned based on when we received your COMPLETED (this includes our reception of your reservation fee as well) housing reservation. HOWEVER – Do Not Worry if you have a later time-slot. If you know someone with an earlier time-slot and you both want to be roommates, THAT person can – and SHOULD – use their earlier time-slot to go in, make their selection, and PULL YOU IN! (Provided that you BOTH matched with each other on My College Roomie.)

NOTE: Once your time-slot begins, for the first 7-10 days, THE SELECTION SYSTEM WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM 10 a.m.  to 5:00 pm WEEKDAYS. Once everyone has had the opportunity to make their selection, you will have access 24-7 to the system to look and choose. REMEMBER – THERE ARE TIME-SLOTS STARTING RIGHT BEHIND YOU – IF YOU TAKE LONGER TO MAKE YOUR CHOICE(S), IT COULD IMPACT THE SPACES THAT YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM.

    • WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND AND WANT A DIFFERENT ROOM?

Contact University Housing if you make a mistake or need to make a change to your housing selection for the coming term.

    • WHAT IF THE HALL I WANT TO LIVE IN DOES NOT HAVE ANY OPEN ROOMS WITH SPACE FOR BOTH MYSELF AND MY CONFIRMED ROOMMATE?

Lets say that you want to move into Ackerman Hall in the Fall and that both you and your roommate want to be in Ackerman. If you find that there are NO open double rooms in Ackerman where you are looking, start by looking in different communities in Ackerman. If there are no doubles available anywhere in Ackerman . . .

You will need to decide – Is your priority to stay with your roommate – or is it to stay in Ackerman Hall?

Think about what it is that you want. If you want to stay in that community – perhaps you and your roommate could choose two single spaces in rooms right next to each other or across the hall in Ackerman?

If your priority is to stay with that roommate – then you can clear your search and look for different communities in Ackerman with open doubles, or go completely out of Ackerman and look at Barnum (if available this year) or Heritage to see if you can find an open double for you and your roommate to live together.

If worse comes to worse and you are just not seeing anything, contact the Housing Team – we are here to help!

    • I PLAY BASEBALL (OR BASKETBALL, OR VOLLEYBALL, OR RUN TRACK) – AND I WANT TO LIVE WITH MY TEAMMATE. HOW DO I DO THAT?

MAKE SURE THAT BOTH YOU AND YOUR TEAMMATE HAVE MATCHED UP WITH ONE ANOTHER ON MCR AS CHOSEN ROOMMATES. THIS CONFIRMS YOU BOTH AS  ROOMMATE CHOICES – KEEP IN MIND the  matching deadline for MCR (5 pm, the day before your Selection begins). Once you are CONFIRMED roommates, the person with the earliest selection start time needs to make sure that when they select a space that their chosen roommate(s) also show up in that selection. REMEMBER, only CONFIRMED roommates can be pulled into a selected space.

NOTE:  EVERYONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE THAT THEY RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION EMAIL THAT STATES THAT THEY HAVE BEEN PLACED IN A ROOM OR APARTMENT.  If you do NOT receive your confirmation email and you think that you should have – CONTACT THE HOUSING TEAM IMMEDIATELY!

    • WHAT TIME ZONE ARE THE START TIMES LISTED IN?

Currently all start times are listed for the Pacific Daylight Time Zone.  Take a look at this website to figure out what your start time will be wherever you happen to be.
